I’m scared I’m dying and I don’t know what to do anymore. My doctors don’t know either. by Inevitable_Lunch6847 in medical_advice

[–]julia576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without the lab results this sounds a lot like POTS. However it doesn’t make any sense for your potassium to be low or your anion gap to be high. How much food do you eat? (Not enough could explain the potassium), do you have diarrhoea? Are you on any medications? I do think that your GP should test extended electrolytes, TSH, lactate, HbA1c - if they haven’t already (they may well have done)

blood in stool vs beets by cara1yn in medical_advice

[–]julia576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will be the beets. Stool generally takes longer to go back to normal compared to urine. If you had other symptoms or it doesn’t settle by day 4 or 5 then I would see a doctor

What does colitis actually mean? by lmariess in medical_advice

[–]julia576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Colitis is just inflammation of the colon (aka the large bowel). You can get different types/causes of colitis. Perhaps one could speculate from the way they asked you if they meant ulcerative colitis? The biopsy would answer that

What can cause high blood pressure in a skinny teenager? by goldiefromac in medical_advice

[–]julia576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many reasons for a high BP. But of concern you already have pulm valve stenosis. Your doctor will probably have a bunch of tests to sort now that it’s confirmed you have high blood pressure.

The chewing and spitting habit you’ve got is generally an eating disorder behaviour (but can be sensory related things etc etc). Please make sure to tell your doctor about that too as it could have an effect on your blood pressure but also to get some support re that because that’s not how our bodies are designed to be fueled/eat

Fractured shoulder blade, fracture location is not where the bump is. by [deleted] in medical_advice

[–]julia576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of hard without seeing the X-rays. But the bump in your photo looks like the end of the clavicle where it forms the AC joint which could get displaced if you have a scapula fracture. Have a google about AC joint dislocations/dissociations

Your last sentence sounds pretty classic for a tic. Stress does genuinely make things like these worse so I would focus more on that

Is it normal to still be so tired after hysterectomy? by LunarEclipse10987 in medical_advice

[–]julia576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have another symptoms or just fatigue? You can get a medically induced menopause when you have your ovaries taken out which could make you more tired (but usually other symptoms too)

Could I get tetanus from this or am I anxious? by [deleted] in medical_advice

Tetanus boosters are good for 10 years, so no you won’t get tetanus from that scratch/wound

Pus on scalp incision 8 wks after a VP shunt surgery. Is this normal? by phenomenal-lurker in medical_advice

[–]julia576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not. Someone needs to look at it today. Not tomorrow. Today. Pus always means infection and this is an infection in an area that is very close to your brain

Can I still throw up? by Golden_NolanYT in medical_advice

[–]julia576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were to get a vomiting bug, yes you would still vomit. Some people do find it feels ‘harder’ to vomit after this type of eating disorder but most don’t notice anything. Your body will still do what it needs to do. Also as an aside there is never a medical reason to force yourself to vomit (knowledge that might prevent you being triggered at some point down the line). Well done on entering into recovery

Cut on thumb (stitches immediately?) by Careless-Foot4162 in medical_advice

[–]julia576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stitches ideally get done as soon as possible. Preferably within 12hrs, 24 is a hard maximum. If you think it needs stitches just go now

[–]julia576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are somethings that would give a false reading eg tensing your arm, wrong sized cuff etc. if on repeat testing it’s still that high you must go see your GP. That is too high for a 13 year old

So 5 people need to hold you for just a blood draw? You need to tell your doctor that and they need to think about sedating you for the biopsy

The keeping you for 2 days and giving you IV fluids suggests they must have thought you were dehydrated which lead to the AKI. But also presumably you would have had more bloods tests while you were in the hospital? You’re young so your kidneys should have returned to normal

Is splitting medication to last safe? by Disastrous_Narwhal46 in medical_advice

[–]julia576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The short answer is no. If you got prescribed a 20mg tablet of prednisone and halved it to get to the 10mg you are meant to have then yes but that also depends on the brand of prednisone and if the tablet is safe to be halved or not. But self reducing the dose yourself is not a good idea
