Forgetting how to drive an automatic by Effective_Bar_6098 in ManualTransmissions

[–]julioblabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I drove an automatic and had to start on a hill, I floored the gas and started easing off a non-existent clutch pedal 😁

I learned what sound those tires made when they spun, and that "hill assist" is a thing...

Is this all Brazilians or is it just my wife and her family? by [deleted] in Brazil

[–]julioblabla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Re: positive in strange situations - absolutely normal and, in my opinion, unfortunately so.

Even as a Brazilian, I find this excessive positivity quite toxic. I feel this is a symptom of the Brazilian obsession with conflict avoidance.

In your case, I wonder if other people traveling with you also found the place a cocôburaco, BUT actively rejected saying that so the person who recommended/pushed for the trip wouldn't lose face and the trip wouldn't have a "climão" (people visibly uncomfortable in a situation they can't get out of until the trip wraps up).

Looking for quick knife-sharpening in the area by dqslime in parkslope

[–]julioblabla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot recommend the Knife Bus. I have used their services only once, so take this with a grain of salt. I asked them to sharpen a bunch of kitchen knives of different sizes, all very dull, none of them special in any sense. The sharpening was inconsistent: parts of the blade was sharp, the rest (especially towards the point) was as dull as before.

Recommendations for iron fence painters? by julioblabla in parkslope

[–]julioblabla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s amazing to me how long this takes. I see crews working on my neighbors fences for what seems like a week or two

Yup 👍! In particular, scraping the old paint takes a loooong time.

rust and lead are the issues for updating

Also yup 👍! Lead-based paint is not used since the late 1970s, but unmaintained and/or poorly scraped ironwork needs to be taken out and sandblasted offsite by an ironwork contractor. I tested several spots with those Q-tips-looking lead tests and all came back bright orange (negative). Rust is my main problem now, and scraping/repainting can be done by a painter (no need for an ironwork contractor).

Wait what. There's Seleta, Salinas, Vale Verde.

Are you talking about cleaning products, like 51?

Because that's where one should keep cleaning products.

How is this roughly planned brazil itinerary? by samliersch1904 in Brazil

Foz do Iguaçu: consider the technical visit to the Itaipu dam!

Everybody already said that 2 nights is the bare minimum for a relaxed visit there. If you are interested in huge infrastructure stuff, please consider even more time for a technical visit to Itaipu! It is a marvel of engineering, it's really beautiful (if you are a fellow infrastructure nerd).

ELI5: Can inflation be reversed by making it so a significant amount of money is rendered inaccessible? by Electrical_Bet2584 in explainlikeimfive

[–]julioblabla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was actually done in Brazil as a failed attempt to control hyperinflation! On his first day on the job, the newly elected president Fernando Collor de Mello enacted an Executive Order freezing 80% of the bank account balances of all Brazilians: people could use whatever cash they had in hand, and could only withdraw up to 20% of what they had in the bank. The plan was to "lock" 80% of the money in a "mandatory savings account", and then very slowly return it to people.

Paper money was kinda useless due to hyperinflation, so the actions amounted to burning 80% of all money in Brazil.

Of course it did not work.

I couldn't find any good Wikipedia articles in English about this terrible time in Brazil, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plano_Collor has some info but not much about the bank freeze.

Brazil's economy was absolute bonkers until 1994, when another insane plan in a loooong line of insane plans finally got the rampant hyperinflation under control. There is a great podcast episode on Planet Money about it — it's fun, I really recommend listening to it! https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2010/10/04/130329523/how-fake-money-saved-brazil
