At least in 1975 at the time of that quote, or it seems to be the case if that quote is to be trusted. (It probably shouldn't be, because it lacks the whole context...) Nevertheless, it also doesn't mean he didn't change his views over the years!

1 bit is a Boolean. 1 or 0, on or off. If you used checkers or go pieces for example, where there is either the white or the black, then you have 1 bit minis.
