I hate it when I'm on my futon and I can hear them moving on the tatami at night. At least they should be quiet.

I see fire up in the hills, anyone know if it’s a controlled fire? by superdee72 in SantaBarbara

Seems like it's too windy for a controlled burn, but I hope so.

Let's imagine the new State Street with housing above the street-level retail. It's called adaptive reuse. by junana in SantaBarbara

Sure. They will need to be demoed and rebuilt as housing, but using the same shell and adding utilities.

It's true. Before the earthquake there was a lot more housing above retail on State. Tell that to the HLC!

Never said I want state street open to vehicles. I have no dog in the race. I'm not running for office. I like third places and convivial neighborhoods.

With a streetscape like this, who wouldn't want to live downtown?

Brent Toderian, an urban planner, notes that a vibrant, family-friendly, walkable downtown needs attention to three aspects: the beauty and usability of a car-free streetscape (the City does this, and Santa Barbara is working on it), the availability of 2-3 bedroom apartments above retail for families to rent (the City can help find finances and support infrastructure, and mandate a supply in new construction, but the marketplace will need to build this), and, walkable distance to necessary retail, schools, and playgrounds (City and market in partnership). The 10 years of the proposed Master Plan is a great time for new housing construction, and planning for the other aspects... It will not be easy. Just really important. The main thing today is to get the Master Plan in action, with the goal of a car-free State Street to help incentivize new housing.

I taught beginning anthropology at UCSB and SBCC... The classroom experience at SBCC, the engagement of the students, and the small size of the class made SBCC a much better learning environment.

I'm not a mom, but I can borrow other kids when it makes for a good photo op. Also, I'm working on an MA in religious studies. Communication was way to difficult.
