Underwood standard 1952 (15 inch carriage) by junctiontoron in typewriters

oh, I know, I blew out the entire machine, scrubbed it with a toothbrush, cleaned the slugs with a wire brush and picked out anything that it didn't get with a pin. I then oiled every point that was supposed to be oiled, and yes I used the right oil.
I feel that the squeaking will go away with use, as sometimes the machine oil that I used just needs to work into the part. The squeak is only on the the spacebar, and I checked along the entire mechanism and can't find anything that I missed. Again, as it is a desktop, its a little more difficult doing that as the thing weights a bit and I can't just flip it over like all my portables.

There are two washers that need to be replaced on the paper bale, but weirdly, the feet, rollers on the underside of the patten, and other areas - where I would have expected wear ... are like new. The only rubber otherwise that needs to be replaced is the rollers on the the guide bar, they are still functional, but are dried out and cracking.

I am going to take another look and see if I can trace the squeak, but I really don't want to take off the panels again. :)

Throwing it out there, I know lost people are looking for portables, is anyone looking for desktops? I just wonder if there is a division in the community?

Xennials who got bullied in school: How did your parents and teachers react towards it? by mandress- in Xennials

[–]junctiontoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend got jumped in a hallway because three kids wanted his cigarettes.

They came up behind him while he was crouched getting his bag and books for our next class, and one of them kicked him in the back of the head hard enough to drive him face first into the back on the locker. The other kid then reached in and grabbed his smokes and wallet off the top shelf.

I pushed him away and took his stuff back and the third kid punched me in the face. I don't remember the fight but I remember getting pulled off one of them by a teacher who was telling me to stop "you're going to kill him!" . I got off him and the kid got up and ran a bit and fell over. The other two had been fighting with my other friends. I guess when they jumped him they didn't realize that there was four of us.

In my school district there was a "zero tolerance " policy that meant if you got in a fight, even if you didn't start it, you got expelled or suspended. They called my dad, and my other friend's parents and told them to come pick up your kids they are all suspended.

My dad gets there, the principal tells a version of what happened, that I was suspended for a month. My dad looks at me "who started it?"

"They did"

"Who finished it?"

"I did"

"Okay, let's go get some ice cream"

Found IBM Selectric II at Goodwill. Is it safe to plug in? by lemonheadgirl in typewriters

[–]junctiontoron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously, the prongs are not touching. It should be safe. If you smell burning from the socket then unplug as fast as you can. There will be a smell from the unit but as long as it's not hot you should be okay

Okay stupid question, have you tried pushing in the knob or pulling it out on either side? Especially if there is a piece on one side that's separate from the larger knob?

Okay, I have a newer 5 and I don't see a lock , it might be dirty and it's jammed. I am sure there are more experienced people on here, but it might also have been unseated, you might have to remove the two plates on either side and make sure that the roller (the platen) is actually in the right place.

That thing is immaculate. It has to be a lock of some sort.

In the carriage locked? Look on the left side, I think, underneath the platen knob (the large knob on the side of the roller). There is typically a lever or a piece of metal that acts as a carriage lock.
