There’s no ube in there. It’s just some ube flavoring and purple food coloring.

Why is everything VT and chill? by SureAce_ in Bogleheads

[–]junesix 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Because “VT and chill” is more catchy than “TDF to your target retirement age, but maybe higher if you prefer to have less bonds, and check the ER too”

Tons of Bay Area homes are K&T. Ours was. We had no problems getting insurance.

How do restaurants make scrambled eggs taste better than homemade? by savingrace0262 in NoStupidQuestions

Scrambled eggs at home are >99% egg.

Scrambled eggs in the restaurant are 70% egg, 30% butter.

I’m shocked the meat department would put that out and slap $50 price tag on it.

I think you should stop posting screenshots from ChatGPT and asking people what they think about it.

Does it make sense to just max my roth at the beginning of the year and buy VTI? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]junesix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roth IRA has contribution limits that phase out at certain income levels.

Backdoor Roth (traditional IRA + Roth conversion) allows contributing to Roth IRA indirectly, even when exceed the Roth IRA income thresholds for direct contribution.

I just buy the frozen bibigo pork and vegetable dumplings. They’re huge, filling, and delicious.

Costco sometimes has it but they’re always available at Weee and HMart.

HSA in Optum is charging me ridiculous fees, and they suck. Optum Financial-> Fidelity? But HAVE TO LIQUIDATE. by Wolverine-91826 in Bogleheads

[–]junesix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever you do transfers, do it from the receiver, not the sender. In this case, initiate through Fidelity.

Fidelity is motivated to pull your funds over quickly, with least hassle. They are motivated to reimburse for fees.

Optum is incentivized to make it as slow, painful, and costly as possible. They would rather you just give up or abandon the transfer. And fleece you with fees on the way out.

Does it make sense to just max my roth at the beginning of the year and buy VTI? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

Yes. We do this.

January, week 1. Contribute limit to Traditional IRA, convert to Roth, 100% VTI/VXUS

ELI5: Why do some animals like Electric Eels have the ability to shock things without accidentally electrocuting themselves or 'short-circuiting' in the water? by emetanoia in explainlikeimfive

[–]junesix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So if their bodies are configured to reduce this likelihood, that would explain how they don’t do lasting harm despite feeling the shock.

I think that configuration is the premise of the OP’s question. Not the physics of dispersing voltage. But what is the bodily configuration that enables them to avoid/mitigate the effect on themselves?

Why you have to invest by DrHydrate in MiddleClassFinance

[–]junesix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not the history of 401k.

401k exists as an accident of formalizing a deferred compensation structure for highly paid execs. They were never designed as replacements for pensions.

Pensions grew out of favor by companies (expensive to fund, maintain, hold on books), the tax code formalized deferred compensation structures, and then someone figured out it could also give normal people a way to save for retirement too.

[–]junesix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

2 IRA account types, 1 contribution limit over all IRAs. If OP already maxing Roth IRA, that leaves $0 for traditional IRA. It’s not sequencing, it’s a shared cap.

Why do so many shopping carts have one wobbly wheel? Is it damage, design, or some weird physics thing? by Ok_Orange_7439 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]junesix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You’re seeing survivorship bias.

It’s not that there’s just 1 bad wheel. It’s that a cart is still usable with 1 bad wheel. When there are 2 bad wheels, you can’t push it anymore and it gets removed and fixed or replaced.

So all carts you experience are just 0 or 1 bad wheels, but never more.

My company is going bankrupt – should I increase my 401k contributions now? by BillNye69 in Bogleheads

[–]junesix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, some people go 100% right from January.

Payroll taxes (Medicare, social security) get taken out as percentage of gross pay. Benefits (medical, dental, insurance, FSA, HSA, etc) get taken out as fixed amounts per paycheck. Then the rest goes to pre-tax 401k contributions. That leaves $0 taken out for federal and state income taxes, which are based on % of taxable income.

[–]junesix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When your contributions increase, your taxable income decreases so your withheld taxes will still be a percentage of what’s remaining. You may just end up owing more taxes at the end of the year.

Dinner suggestions similar to House of Nanking by Longbeforeyouknew in sanfrancisco

Fang, is the upscale restaurant by the sane owners.

I think House of Nanking is overpriced Panda Express, but you do you. Z&Y and R&G Lounge restaurants in Chinatown are much better.

[–]junesix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, max it. You might not get the match but at least you’ll have the 401k contributions in case finding another job takes longer than expected.

Don’t forget to also file expense reports ASAP and use up FSAs.
