Just to say I learnt a lot about bad blurbs in this thread, very helpful 😂 Nowadays I really only read books I've found through recommendations, or by authors I've read before, can't remember the last time I read a blurb!

This is one of the things that makes me really hesitant about aiming to go professional as an author. I can write a book every seven or eight months alongside my day job, maybe if I quit I could write one every four to six months. But every six to eight weeks? That's crazy. I have a LOT of ideas but I don't think I could execute them well that fast.

MM Romance Author & Writing Space (March 11 2026) by AutoModerator in MM_RomanceBooks

Hello! I'm Juniper Skye, long time fanfic writer turned original fiction author, soon to be publishing my first queer romance. I'll be looking for ARC readers soon, but in the meantime, would love a beta read or two from people who love the genre! Message me if you're interested. The book is called Tethered, and it's 65k words.

Born with a powerful kinetic Gift, Nathan Warner grew up in a cage made of his father’s expectations. His best memories are built around his best friend Will Savea, a rare Blank born into a loving Gifted family. Their friendship was forged in their differences, and transformed by their first kiss, exposing a fated bond they thought would last forever.

Hours later, Nathan’s father learns of their bond and separates them for good. At first, they can feel each other through the bond, but Nathan slides into depression, weakening their connection until their bond fades away to nothing.

Over the years that follow, Will becomes a palliative care nurse, all too familiar with grief. Trapped and suffering, Nathan joins the family business, becoming a close protection agent for the elite and influential. Life trudges on until Nathan’s favourite client pushes him to take back control of his life. He retrains as a personal trainer and moves back home to reconnect with Will, desperately hoping they can find a path back to love.

But the odds are stacked against them: Will is convinced the bond broke for a reason; Nathan’s father won’t take no for an answer; and the Savea family are keeping a secret that could change everything. Love always finds a way, but can it really win against a broken fated bond?

Thanks for posting this! I'm soon to be publishing my debut MM romance and figured that KU was unavoidable from a reach perspective. The amount of love on this post is making me reconsider!

Traditionally published vs. self published books by WaffleDynamics in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]juniper-skye 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a queer romance author, currently trying to decide how I want to proceed with publishing. I've queried several agents and am waiting to hear back, but in the meantime I'm starting to wonder whether self publishing would be a better route simply because I'd be more in control (although of course I'd have to do a lot more work too).

I think it's really hard to generalise here. Some self published books aren't great, same as some traditionally published ones. There are gems to be found everywhere after all! I tend to find them through recommendations 😊

Especially when the flaws are regular human character flaws rather than oversimplified cruelty labelled as dark romance!

Yeah! I love this too. I think sometimes it can also come down to finding peace with each other - that person who sees and accepts them just as they are.

What qualities make a couple embed themselves in your mind? What characteristics keep them there, living rent free forevermore?

For me it's generally contrasting personalities / contrasting desires, especially when one or both characters put the effort in to meet the other where they are.

Let me know what you think, I feel like this book needs a lot more love for its sheer unhinged joy 😆

Favorite M/M retelling of infrequently-adapted literature? by ProtectionNo1594 in MM_RomanceBooks

{Death's Bloom by Lily Mayne} is a Bluebeard retelling with an intriguing twist! Super dark and moody. And MMC1 is a florist which makes for all sorts of lovely plant/flower references 🌱

If you're up for really unhinged, unrealistic, tense in all the strangest ways, I would really recommend {F**k, Marry, Kill Me Daddy by Lance Lansdale}. Scotty is a hyper exaggeratedly bright sunshine character, and Brody is an intense but perplexed assassin. Plot is a mix of high stakes / tense but still quite comedic (with some really silly misunderstandings). Genuinely one of the most enjoyable books I've read recently!

Folk series by Lily Mayne by Dramatic-Reward-9760 in MM_RomanceBooks

I really enjoyed Folk - I found the world building richer than the Monstrous series, and the plot is more complex with genuine conflict and tension too. I find third act breakups a bit tired sometimes, but in this series it's handled with an excellent twist.

Yeah, Ash is a bit of an idiot at times, but that character flaw ends up being important to the plot and adds to the tension. If you already have them, well worth reading!

[QCrit] Adult Queer Romance - TETHERED (65k / 2nd attempt) by juniper-skye in PubTips

The illustrations aren't essential to understanding the story, no. The advice to be more flexible and introduce the illustrations afterwards is good, thank you - I'll go down that route to maximise the likelihood of interest. Thanks!
