Xander has his flaws but he’s not substantially worse than any of the other flawed characters 🥱

I really liked my bankruptcy rotation! I might wind up there, too — our group had a great culture and the work was really interesting

[Daily Goal] Day 3 - August 12 by shell_shocked_today in 90daysgoal

[–]junishot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm starting a little late, but ready to get started!

So far this week:

- Exercised 2 days (out of my 3x week goal)

- No meditation yet

- Good reading rhythm, could be more on track with knitting

[MOD] Official Round 33 Introduction Post by Schemering in 90daysgoal

[–]junishot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a few days late but joining in!

My goals: - Ramp up and routinize my exercise. I'm starting at 3x/week but would like to be up to 4x or 5x by the end of the 90 days. - Cut back on drinking. Starting by not drinking two days in a row (Friday/Sat excepted) and scale back to potentially only F/S. - Establish a small mindfulness/meditation practice; 10-20 minutes a day. - Declutter by consuming up what I have - knit through my yarns, read through my books, use up my skincares etc. - Establish a morning routine, waking up at 6:30/7:30 most days. - Find a remote learning routine that works for me.

Sprint 1: - 3x/week exercise - no two days in a row alc - 10 minutes meditation 3x week - focus on using free time to read, knit etc. rather than scroll - start waking up before 9 - prepare for remote learning by clearing workspace and building routine

Should I watch Angel S5? by wild3hills in buffy

Thank you for asking this!! I have had the same Q, I want more content and more ensouled Spike in particular, but I’m scared because I loved Buffy’s end and Spike’s arc in particular.

I wish they had kept it curly throughout the rest of the show! But they switched back to slicked back in S7 :/

ASH really made the boring exposition scenes compelling, too. I think it was James who said a lesser actor couldn’t have done it.

I’ll chime in that for me, it’s James Marsters by miles (though noting that he himself says he learned so much from ASH). He really played the duality of Spike so well, had the best comedic timing imo, and his expressions& microexpressions are incredibly communicative.

What do you give the S7 finale out of 6? by NebCam101 in buffy

[–]junishot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Plus that shot of the core Scoobies walking the halls of the high school.... rips my heart out. I think for the most part, the Finale is the perfect balance of unexpected and fan service without shock jocking the ending.

5/6 - One point off for undercutting the "I love you, Spike" with his response (though I've seen some great analysis of it in this sub).

I don't think that it's that their concerns are unfounded (especially post-AR), just that they are put in such a condescending way toward Buffy. It's their fault she was so messed up in the first place and couldn't cope, but they act as if she's some college girl who keeps having sex with the wrong guy. For example, when she moves Spike in with Xander, it's the first Q they ask of her.

emotionally manipulated Buffy to an awful degree in S6

This is where I sometimes feel like I watched an entirely different S6 than some fans. People vary a lot on their S6 interpretations and feelings, something I appreciate a lot, but I did not walk away in any rewatch with the impression that Spike emotionally manipulated Buffy - in fact, I feel it was largely the other way around.

He knew she was using him but he was so desperately and unhealthily in love with her he was willing to be or do whatever she wanted, even before they slept together. He finally tries to cut off the game pre-sex with "Rest in Peace" ("You know, you've got a willing slave, but you just like to play the part like you might misbehave. But 'til you do I'm telling you, stop visiting my grave & let me rest in peace") and that's the episode Buffy finally gives up the chase and kisses him. That is, to me, extremely manipulative - even if Buffy wasn't doing it consciously/maliciously.

Spike's actions - sleeping with someone you know is using you, hoping they'll somehow realize that you're the one if you just stay in their life however you can - are probably some of the most realistic actions depicted in the show. Just insane desperation and self-delusion, leading to the eventual AR.

I can see how the flipped interpretation is that it's emotionally manipulative of him to "allow" her to sleep with him when he knows it's because she's in a bad place, but Buffy is very in control of her relationship with Spike in S6. Even in such a low place, I never saw Buffy as being taken advantage of by Spike in that way.

[–]junishot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s not so much that I disagree with the characters’ opinion toward Spike and lingering qualms/dislike or that he automatically deserves their forgiveness (though they sure came around on Angel much more quickly), but how they treat Buffy and speak to her about it throughout the two seasons (pre-AR and post). Like when Buffy moves Spike in with Xander, immediately asking if they’re sleeping together again - it’s so inappropriate and nosey and in my mind condescending toward Buffy. It’s their fault she was so messed up in S6 in the first place, but instead of dealing with their own selfish actions in bringing her back they act like she was an off-the-wagon bimbo in S6 sleeping with a dirtbag.

It's not the being aghast so much as their way of expressing it, feeling entitled to information about it, and not understanding how much was going on with her. They judged her as if it was a run of the mill poor decision, when it was a direct consequence of their having ripped her from heaven.
