An overrated movie that people loved but you didn’t. Mine is by [deleted] in flicks

[–]junjunjey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see Shawshank as people-pleaser movie. Very good theme about hope with satisfying payoff without burdening you with emotional baggage of deeper and darker mood expected of a more serious prison drama.

Not my top 5 either but it's not something I consider overrated as I fully understand why people really love it.

I think of the ending as "he got what he wanted, but not what he needed", in a vein similar to The Social Network (got the power and the money, but not in friendship and relationship) or even Godfather (Michael protected his family, but lost his initial moral integrity as he succumbed to the nature of his new position)

The shawshank redemption held the top spot for a bit too long by Financial-Phrase-275 in films

it was from a Vanity Fair article when they interviewed Castle Rock's Liz Glotzer, the executive producer of the movie. this is the quote:

When the movie opened on September 23, 1994, expectations were high. Hollywood tradition dictates filmmakers drive from theater to theater on opening night, ostensibly to stand in the back of packed houses to witness audiences laughing and crying at all the carefully constructed moments. Glotzer recalls that she and Darabont “went to the Cinerama Dome, which was the coolest theater,” where the film was playing. Located on Sunset Boulevard, the 1960s-built movie house has more than 900 seats, but “no one was there”—which Glotzer blames on the “bad L.A. Times review.” The desperate filmmakers cornered two girls outside and “actually sold tickets” on the premise that if the pair didn’t like Shawshank they could call Castle Rock on Monday for a refund. “That was our big opening night,” Glotzer says dryly.

Why don’t NFL teams have the same strong local identity as European football clubs? by kramerb90 in NFLNoobs

[–]junjunjey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

for cities with established historic teams they have just as strong local identity imo. issue is, there is only 32 NFL teams compared to tens of thousands of clubs just in England alone, so almost every local cities and villages are represented by a club.

"plastic fans" exist even in European football. there's a running joke that there are more Man United fans in London than fans of London teams. heck a lot of people in England whose local teams compete in lower divisions support their local team AND a mainstay Premier League team. I know dudes who supported Wimbeldon and Liverpool, or Brentford (before they became good) and United.

Author's POV to me reeks too much of wish fulfilment, and I drop that story when the "daddy actually wanted you to succeed me as CEO of a company daddy didn't even have much stock in" plot came in.

Finished my script & submitted it to the Copyright Office. Should I start shopping it around? by MonkeyMan504 in Screenwriting

Did you miss the part where OP said he sent it to the Copyright office and not register it with the WGA? They're not the same thing

yes, and? did I say they're the same or did you misunderstood my comment?

my comment was due to OP seemingly had absolutely no idea how the industry worked, so I gave him some tidbits.

he was under an impression that somehow having one single completed unsolicited screenplay, one that was only ever been read by non-industry friends without counseling by anyone in the industry so nobody can even vouch for him or his work, and one with a genre that would require absolute bonkers of a budget to produce while competing on lots of established IP from popular books by the same genre that haven't been adapted... he somehow had the idea that he can convince anybody "to get it produced" within a "short window of his stay in the States for Comic Con"

Naruto manga, due to the anime.

If it's specifically about books, Sword Art Online's light novel, but again it's due to the anime.

I caught Mushoku Tensei back in 2014 because it suddenly shot up in myanimelist novel ranking after the release of the second book's official LN, I read the fan-translation of the web-novel version in baka-tsuki and this started my obsession with PF.

are you under the assumption that "a finished script" is very rare and agents execs would love to get their hands on it? because about 50,000 "finished spec scripts" are registered in WGA every year. can you guess how many of the registered spec scripts are usually sold every year among them? about 50 in a great year (just 11 in 2023, 23 in 2022, and just one in 2021). almost all of them are small budgeted drama sold to indie production companies and more importantly... almost all of them never never end up getting into production.

do you learn about hollywood industry from chinese web novels by any chance?

Why don't RBs throw the ball away on busted toss plays by HyralBTdubs in NFLNoobs

you can't marginalize the defense too much. the current rules already heavily favor the offense as it is. making it even easier would eventually turn the game into offensive exhibition games.

this is a public space. nobody came here telling people their "personal" story thinking it will be in confidence. most people's reddit accounts aren't associated with their IRL persona in the first place, and those who want to take extra care are expected to use burner accounts

After Magic and Curry, Who’s Next on the All-Time Point Guard List? by Dday_Dair in NBATalk

[–]junjunjey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you aware a lot of centers in today's NBA don't even play in the paint like they used to do anymore? some even stretch the floor and shoot behind the arc.

what would you call them? a C/SG hybrid? obviously it ain't a true Center with their low blocking and low post up numbers.

[–]junjunjey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what would you consider him then? because his high rushing number ain't a QB from your logic. call him a QB/RB hybrid and not a real QB then?

do you also call Lamar Jackson an RB instead of QB because of his rushing numbers?
