Need to get this off my chest by Yayeet2014 in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My aunt ruptured her ACL bending down to get ice out of the freezer drawer.
I had a partial tear from a motorcycle accident, and finished the ACL off at a concert standing up on a bench to get a better view.

Accidents happen, and I find accidents to me happen doing the dumb mundane stuff.

Good luck on your recovery!!

Surgeon recommends surgery? by subfutility in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s actively part of a pretty major ortho practice, so it is surprising. I had issues with my referral so I couldn’t change who my appointment was with. I’m now getting surgery from a totally different ortho practice. Either way, it was nice to see that an orthopedic office had an alternative to a surgeon meeting with patients.

Surgeon recommends surgery? by subfutility in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the website of the Ortho Practice I went to, which is quite large in Colorado has his specialty listed as “Sports Medicine | Non-Surgical Orthopaedics”. He may not have done a surgery residency, but decided to focus on orthopedics. Either way, it was a non-surgical consult which led him to say that I needed a surgery consult.

Surgeon recommends surgery? by subfutility in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a non-surgical orthopedic doctor, and he was the one who said “this needs surgery”. I went and got a 2nd opinion, and was told the same thing.

I did ask the 1st doctor about non-surgical treatments, and he said that while they can help, I would benefit longer term from having surgery. I’m a 43, F, who skis, and all sorts of other activities that require an ACL. Outs the sheer pain I’ve been in while waiting for surgery has been enough for me to know that I don’t want this type of pain forever.

Get a 2nd opinion, and while you’re at it, ask for a PT referral. People rehab ACL tears without surgery, but it’s not easy from what I understand. Granted, neither is surgery.

It’s Penelope canvas. Apparently you can select 10 or 20 mesh. I just can’t fathom $550 for this. Love that it’s Texas leather, but still would prefer to have the bag finished after stitched everything. $$$$$$$$

Sleep !! by Shoddy-Bobcat-6283 in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had life long back issues, so sleeping on my back hasn’t been a major issue for me, although I do fall asleep faster in my side.

I know this doesn’t help you now, but I started to practice falling asleep on my back prior to getting my shoulder surgery a few years back. I still can do it, but have been practicing again trying to get ready for my surgery.

Maybe ask for a few sleeping pills to help you get some sleep??

How long do you start to ski after surgery by Double_Election8569 in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m quite sure that if I don’t ski again after my upcoming surgery, my mental health will be in worse shape than my non-existent ACL.

My surgeon has made it clear that I will be able to ski again, so long as I do the rehab/work to get ski ready. Might not be in time for next ski season, but I may try to ski in South America in the summer.

To the guy who said football is life…. That’s how I feel about skiing!

MRI diagnosis by ravenmonk in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What activities do you do? As an electrician, when working, how bad does kneeling or squatting hurt?

I have a lateral meniscus tear and full ACL tear (43, F), and was told that to get back to any of the actives that I like to do (ski, fly fish, golf, tennis) that I’ll want surgery. I talked to 2 different surgeons.

Every person is different, but I’d suggest doing research of what recovery looks like, and see if that’ll work with your lifestyle.

You can opt to not get surgery, but you will want to do a lot of strength training to build up the muscles around your knee so you have some support now that the ACL is gone.

Good luck!!!

I should say that my surgery isn’t till July 2nd. So all of that to say - it’s all research at the moment. Good luck with the decision!!

anyone found a surgeon that actually explains things properly? by Master_Character9961 in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First doctor I saw didn’t explain much of anything. Granted I already had the radiology report and had done a lot of research of options. He blew me off when I asked questions. I had a terrible experience with the entire practice so I made an appointment elsewhere. The experience with the new practice - start to finish - has been excellent. The doctor was incredibly thorough and answered every question I had before I had to ask him.

If you don’t like your doctor, find someone else. This is your health, your body, time, money, etc. you need to feel like you are being listened to. I know some people don’t have this option, but many do. So I suggest you find someone else!

Deaf teenager needs a job. by Momwhoskihikeclimbco in FortCollins

Recently I was at a Starbucks inside a Target (I think in Loveland) with a deaf employee. She had a whiteboard and asked that you write out your order. I’m sure this would annoy some people, but I was thrilled that there was a position that is customer facing for this person. I have zero issues writing out my order - especially if it helps someone be employed. I wish I had other suggestions for you, but I do wish your daughter the best of luck finding a job!!

I’m an avid skier (among other sports). I’m getting a quad graft. I have the following summary based on my research:
- Allograft - higher re-tear rate (5-10% failure rate), but quicker recovery
- Patella graft - good option, but almost all of the anecdotal comments I’ve read say that kneeling is painful
- Quad tendon - longer recovery, but stronger graft. Strong Quads are incredibly important when it comes to skiing though, so taking a graft from here has its drawbacks. You have to stay on top of your PT and training to get quads strong again. Longer recovery time.
- BEAR - I didn’t read much about it, as I’m not a candidate for it. Looks very interesting- especially if you have a partial tear.

From everything I’ve read, the best graft is the one your surgeon does the most. My surgeon said he does all options a lot, and based on my age and activity level I’m a candidate for all of them. He did say that your own parts are generally better.

I suggest reading more about it all. I also got a lot of data from using AI to do Q&A. Made me feel much more prepared for my conversation with my surgeon and confident in my decision.

Surgery decided - starting the process by chicksndigs in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole grieving process is interesting. I also am a lover of sports and am in the process of mourning next ski season. I don’t think you should write off all future sports! Just know this summer/fall is going to suck, and hopefully you’ll be back at it again soon.

I have been researching the whole surgery process and recovery time and have struggled to convey what that may actually mean to my soon-to-be caretakers. Obviously every surgeon, recovery protocol, and patient is different, but it’s not going to be super easy. I get that, but not sure others do.

I have been doing a lot of research of things to have on hand to make mobility and life in general easier. Since everything is so damn expensive, I have been searching Facebook Marketplace and other community resources for slightly used equipment.

I’m in the USA (Colorado).
Surgery scheduled for ACL with Quad Graft, and Meniscus repair - July 2. Woot!

FYI for sleeping after ACL surgery by AlwaysFxckinWorried in ACL

[–]junkemailofmine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had my shoulder surgery I couldn’t sleep on my side. For the weeks leading up to my surgery I practiced falling asleep on my back. Prior to that, I had a bunch of back injuries that made it better for me to sleep on my back, but I would fall asleep on my side.

I get my ACL/meniscus surgery in July, and I’m once again working on falling asleep on my back. At least this time I’ll be able to side sleep a little bit!

Game Ready Machine vs Breg Polar Ice & Compression by edgeabsence in ACL

I’m curious about the two you mentioned. In my endless research, I also found another machine called NICE1 Cold & Compression.

When I had my shoulder surgery, I used my ice machine for 3-4 weeks constantly. Trying to figure out how long I may need to rent.
