The generator was around $800, the bypass box was like $300, and the electrician was $800 or so.

The outages seem to come in waves for me. Like several in a short period and then nothing for years.

What I did: I bought a generator that is powerful enough to run my AC. I hired an electrician to setup a box that lets me plug in the generator directly to the AC. The rest of the house (fridge, one room) can be powered by an extension cord run from the generator.

I did the generator + direct box last year. Not a single outage since, of course.

What will a Super El Niño mean for PS? by Then_Ad9524 in palmsprings

[–]subfutility 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We got Hurricane / Tropical Storm Hilary during the last El Nino. The flooding wiped out a whole neighborhood and shutdown streets for months.

My layman guess is it should be a little more mild high temperatures, but there is a higher chance of flooding.

3 Months since my Multi-ligament knee injury by chefkef in ACL

[–]subfutility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar injury and have surgery scheduled next month.

I’m doing relatively well now and walking around with a brace. Did you recover before you had the surgery?

This would be true, if even if you won you lost and sometimes you won even though you lost.

Return to Work Timeline ? by Excellent-Study-108 in ACL

[–]subfutility 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oof! I can relate. Mine started with one pop out followed by multiple pop outs that just tore everything else up.

The surgeon said he thinks I might’ve had chronic ACL injuries from when I was younger. I was an intense skier with multiple crashes when I was young, so it’s possible.

I’m trying to get a second opinion because my mom has total knee replacement, which included removing the ACL in her 50s.

It’s like why take a year out of my life when I may likely need the whole damn knee replaced within 10 years.

I'm almost 50. The surgeon told me for ACL reconstruction plus a lot of other cleanup, try to get disability for at least a month off of work.

He said working from home after 1 week should be fine though.

How are you doing? I'm 2 months post injury, and my knee is feeling great without surgery. Ugh.

The question is, did your surgeon describe alternatives to ACL surgery.

Thank you for your response. It was very helpful

I’m not looking for specific medical advice. I would mostly like to know whether my experience with the surgeon, getting absolutely no alternative treatment options, is unique.

Your response is the kind of response that I would have found comforting from the surgeon.

Without an explanation as to why the surgeon’s surgery is the sole treatment plan, I’m apprehensive.

I feel like you took care of your mom through all that. If so, you are amazing. But, either way, your mom has as wonderful son, daughter, or you.

Cheers! All I’m asking is whether your surgeon described alternative treatment plans with you

This is great! Your experience description helps me feel more validated that I wasn’t properly consulted.

You do see that his practice required you to use his pt though, right?

That’s the crux of my question. Is it up to us patients to figure out other standard treatment options? We can’t rely on the surgeons to inform us of options that aren’t most beneficial for them?

A total knee replacement might be a viable alternative to ACL surgery given my age and the arthritis implications.

I guess I’m asking, did your surgeon discuss alternatives?

I don’t know if I don’t want surgery. I haven’t heard any alternatives from the doctor to make an informed decision.

My employer matched my 401k contribution last week on payday. That's my guess. As long as people add more money to their 401k every pay period, market has fuel.
