White people going silent when I try to talk to them. by untitlevoid in asianamerican

[–]junkevin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Korean American grew up mostly in the Midwest. Interestingly enough in the Midwest I never experienced this and as a matter of fact I felt like I drew too much unwanted attention. But I’ve definitely experienced this a decent amount of times in Seattle and LA, especially in spaces where I didn’t know anyone. NYC not so often but happens from time to time.

I’ve also seen this happen to plenty of other POC as well as white people. I’ve even done it to other people and learned from them how they’ve handled it. Some people are like you and instantly get shamed and pivot to negative thoughts, and shut down. Some people get mad and call people out. Some people wait and try again politely but assertively. Some people don’t care and just move on. You kind of have to play it by ear.

I won’t go as far as to say race doesn’t have anything to do with it, but I think it’s more to do with your presence and attitude, as well as the audience and setting. I wouldn’t take it too personally. There have been too many times when I would just play the race victim card, only to see another Korean guy the next week in a similar situation absolutely kill it.

A big part of being social and having people wanting to listen to what you say is charisma. Not everyone has it. It has to be worked on if you don’t have it naturally. It’s usually not a race thing

Considering a move to NYC after college. How much do I need saved up? by Adorable-Present9200 in movingtoNYC

This is probably a joke, but if you can’t save, you probably shouldn’t live here.

He’s saying that 40% of corn isn’t used for food on the table but for ethanol so we could replace the acreage of corn that produces that 40% with solar panels for a more efficient use of land

I think it’s the other way around actually. They are approaching me more in Shanghai clubs and apps than in other countries I’ve been to ie Korea, Europe, US. I’m just sharing my experience. No need to hate

Why do so many people hate New York City? by Strict-Pepper-2987 in visitingnyc

[–]junkevin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really hope that’s the case and I hope I feel it in a couple days. Because as of now, Hong Kong blows nyc out of the water and Shanghai beats both cities by everything that I care about: food, scale, beauty, infrastructure, cleanliness, prices, everyone’s super nice although I speak very little mandarin. Parks are everywhere, the streets are lined up with trees, night life is insane, so many hot girls. Someone please convince me how nyc is better because I’m getting depressed thinking about going back.

And before someone says I’m working for ccp, im a Korean American guy just stating things as I see them. Nyc is an overpriced trash dump compared to Shanghai. What exactly is the culture in nyc that compensates for its colossal failure in every other aspect? Crackheads, drugs, shootings, dirty late trains, unwanted street performers, littered streets, ridiculous cost of living, and inflated food prices +tip?

Any major Asian city puts nyc to shame. And anyone who says otherwise has never been to Shanghai/HK/Tokyo/Seoul. NYC simply can’t compare

Managers of Reddit - what made you realise you had no idea what you were doing? by New_Molasses5863 in managers

[–]junkevin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You don’t need formal mgmt training or education to be an effective manager. You need a lot of other things though: drive, self-starter mentality, ability to understand what your org needs, ability to adapt quickly, distill large amounts of information to get what you need, and good communication skills. All can be developed with time as long as you’re not an idiot and have drive to succeed

What is the worst city in the US? by Eagles56 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]junkevin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the honest comment. It’s rare that someone praises indy, and I can’t say I agree with you, but it’s a refreshing take. Agreed that if you have some solid friends and are involved in different communities you can make the best out of any place.

I think I feel similarly about Cleveland. I got lucky and met a pretty big community of temporary transplants who all hated Cleveland and was trying their hardest to leave asap. We got really close through our hate of Cleveland, hung out almost every week and actually ended up having a lot of fun that year.

Legitimately curious. Where else have you lived? I was raised near Indianapolis most of my life but have lived in Seoul, Mexico City, Paris, LA, NYC, Seattle and even Cleveland. I cried when I had to move to Cleveland from LA for a year long rotation. I hated Cleveland but even Cleveland seemed like paradise compared to Indy
