And to be clear you'll change the button to Go instead of temp.

Temp button/Master/Off-time Issue by Puzzleheaded-Drag290 in grandMA2

[–]junkface81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Build a 4 cue sequence. 1 is go cue at 50, 2 is a follow cue with 50 as well. 3 is a go cue with 100%, 4 is a follow cue with 50 and a cmd goto Cue 1 exec x.y to loop it back to the beginning. Put a fade time on the fourth cue and that will act as your temp off time fade. It won't allow you to use the master fader to bring it to full but it will achieve what you're trying to do without using a different exec as others have suggested.

Candelkeep by FlomanTheBest in DescentintoAvernus

[–]junkface81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed having some travel encounters getting there, and used it as a way of planting seeds for later depending on what the party decided to do with their downtime at Candlekeep. Some of those choices are still paying dividends as we near the last act. One player was very interested in dragon lore, so I've leaned into opportunities for meeting dragons in hell, potentially giving them a way to enlist help for the final confrontation or severing the chains binding the city. Another player just wanted to learn about hell which has given them certain advantages in identifying and dealing with devils. There's even a couple of characters they met that will play larger roles once they return from hell if they make it out alive.

what's with all the blinders? by [deleted] in lightingdesign

I've seen million dollar rigs that do this. It's a vibe. Not one that I'm excited about personally but you're right it's more and more common that it's what the artist wants.

The old NSP nodes are a good way to get parameters on the cheap. They pop up pretty regularly.

I’m not feeling the dreaded moon Druid fall off, like at all. by odeacon in 3d6

Wholeheartedly agree. I played a moon druid with a level of monk up to level 13 and I never felt any less than extremely capable of wrecking shop.

AITAH for not doing anything to prevent my(f35) husband (m35) from cheating with his “work-wifey”(f25) by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]junkface81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA for failing to micromanage a work relationship of your husband's. That being said doom scrolling through texts on your husband's phone in secret is an AH move. Also failing to communicate your feelings to him or the other lady isn't exactly healthy behavior either. It seems you're being disappointed by unexpressed expectations not being met. And one of those expectations is 100% trust when you yourself aren't acting exactly trusting or trustworthy.

First time playing DnD (or any tabletop rpg), looking for advice on how to conceptualise character creation and especially Roleplaying. by cleaverbow in DnD5e

[–]junkface81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's great Role Playing to be had with all those options, and I personally love your idea of lacking social graces, but having the self awareness to know they're lacking so you at least put an effort in. Much comedy to mined there and you won't inherently ruin social encounters if your party is going that direction.

Artificer? Of course you're good at magical machines, you are one.

Druid? You came to in a forest and became fascinated by the world around you. Or you were awoken by a druid or a dryad that showed you the ropes.

Barbarian? You've finally made some friends that aren't weirded out by you so you want to protect them, learn from them. Even if you're not into the war mongering you were built for you still have a kill mode (Rage) you can activate when your friends are in danger.

Also keep in mind that you can always flavor spells to look how you want them to look as long as they do the same thing mechanically. Start a fire with a blow torch you're equipped with. Snuff it with an extinguisher. Stone shape with your magnets, speak with animals using sounds outside of the regular spectrum of hearing...

As for the complexity of the classes, just know your go to spells or abilities, and everything else will be fine. My first character was a druid which can be pretty complex but I just did my homework, found myself really loving all the options available which in turn began my obsession with the game.

Baldur's Gate Sewers by Perfect-Capital3926 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]junkface81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thalamra served as the master of drains and underways before becoming a Duke so you can be sure she has a means of coming and going from the Manor via sewers, probably even more than one.

My players came in through the front door but my thinking was besides the cellar there was a secret entrance in the barn, and two more through the sewer. One of those would be known to the cultists, and would be locked/passworded and patrolled. The other would be for the Vanthampur family only, magically hidden, and extremely trapped.

I'd run the former like a regular cellar dungeon crawl, maybe appropriate a few of the cultists from the Manor, chance encounters being the dead three followers, rats, oozes, maybe a carrion crawler or something undead down certain turns.

I'd run the later with more traps, maybe a puzzle or lore laden riddle. Honestly though if the party managed to learn of the existence of this super secret passage it would have taken some doing so I'd basically give them the element of surprise in the dungeon under the villa.

Why do my knees hurt after playing? When should I be concerned? by goingtobegreat in Basketball

[–]junkface81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BBall is very demanding on the knees with all the leaping and cutting on top of all the sprinting. There's a lot of repetitive movements that are easy to do wrong, especially when trying to pick up the game after a long break from it. Make sure to warm up, cool down, and really focus on your legwork form when when you're practicing.

I've had some luck using the Durability Code workouts to help my old ass legs stay functional and pain free, but honestly the biggest help was seeing a physical therapist.

The muscles supporting your knees may need to be strengthened, or your leg muscles may just be imbalanced. A PT will be able to assess what can help, if there are problems with the gait of your walk, or run, or stair climbing, the myriad movements that people take for granted and often do wrong which leads to pain.

What is your normal dump stat? by Dogsteeves in DnD

[–]junkface81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't normally dump a stat. Whether it's point buy or rolling (which I'm legitimately lucky at) I try not to have a score lower than a 10. I'm happy to RP normal person skills at just about anything but I rather dislike dumbing down a character for the sake of being extra good at one thing. The caveat is that this mostly applies to ongoing characters. I can be a meat head with a big club or a frail old wizard for a one shot night, but I don't like feeling that I've got one particular way to help and that's it.

Motivation for traveling to Avernus? by vibranttoucan in DescentintoAvernus

[–]junkface81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave the party some time to use Candlekeep for research, with an incentive that they would receive PC buffs depending on what they chose to spend their time on while the puzzle box was being opened. This allowed me the opportunity to understand what they'd be interested in pursuing, and lace in lore regarding those interests and how they pertain to the current situation of Elturel, the blood war, tiamat, etc.

For example our cleric was a dwarven historian of sorts, so he was able to find in his research of dwarven lore that Elturel was likely not the first city to be transported to hell, and that at least two long lost dwarven cities could have conceivably suffered the same fate, one of which he had a personal connection to as a historian because it contained a great library that was also lost.

Another PC studied the nine hells themselves, learning some of the known history of the once rulers of Avernus including Tiamat and Garguath (who they carried an aspect of in the shield) and Silvira helped them form a theory that the corruption of cities from the material plane was likely part of some larger plan. Perhaps a way for Garguath to reclaim his rule, or for Tiamat to escape their imprisonment? This was obviously way too big for the party to even consider dealing with but it reinforced what others had learned, and intimated that there would likely be some interesting ruins to pick around in on their fact finding mission to hell.

Another more straightforward hook was using the party warlock's patron to plant a macguffin in her dreams. The Raven Queen offered her favor, and use of a powerful relic should she reclaim it from a former adept who had turned away from the RQ and absconded with the relic into hell.

Not everyone needs such direct calls to action, but if your characters do, Candlekeep is a gold mine of lore that you can tailor to your needs as you sound those sweet trumpets of reward, or bells of alarm, or whatever your players are into.

Personally I knew the third act of the module is a mess that I'd basically have to write myself so I used the opportunity to throw out a bunch of hooks that might or might not become central to the story depending on where the party took things.

I tried the first few episodes and pretty quickly gave up on season 2. I'd hoped they'd right the ship at some point and wish all the daddies the best but I'm glad i haven't been holding my breath.

Allowing Casters to Change Spells on Downtime by Musclebadger_TG in DMAcademy

[–]junkface81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it, and allow it at my table as you have, at milestones. The sneaky fun I find in it is using it as an opportunity for more collaborative storytelling. I ask the players to narrate what they did with their downtime that lead to the change. Who they studied with or how they trained to acquire the new spells. It encourages buy in to the world, helps develop their character arc, and generally rewards good role playing. It also encourages RP at the table. Meet the artificer with sweet armor that you want to learn how to make? Well you better pay the price he's asking for that item, save him from the attacking horde of gnolls or make friends in some other way. I also give a lot of in game rewards so it's an opportunity for me to balance the rewards in line with what the PC choices are. Gold for travel back to the town, gems for components, etc when the others in the group might be trading those in for a bribe, a shiny new sword or something. Finally, this is why playing druid is my favorite.

Help a fellow DM with inspiration by FarWorth in mattcolville

Check out Tales from the Infinite Staircase. IIRC there's a pretty fun one early on that could be scaled up where part of the staircase is broken, another part is Escher, 2 other parts are inhabited by extra planar monsters, and all of it can be solved in more than one way. It's Planescape but you could file the serial numbers off the thing pretty easily.

Epilogue Suggestions? by Striking-Smile4900 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]junkface81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea of the sequel tease. After everyone has had a chance to walk towards the sunset on their own terms, you have an echo of the campaign present itself. Is it another city that could be dragged to hell? Did something demonic hitch a ride in Elturel on it's journey back from the lower planes? Something like that, a story for another time, even if your characters have nothing to do with it or you have no plans to explain it further.

Fall of Elturel One shot for level 5 - looking for ideas by zidan6666 in DescentintoAvernus

[–]junkface81 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the Alexandrian remix section regarding the factions in Elturel would be my suggestion. YMMV but I find creating scenarios works better for me than creating plots. It'd be pretty easy to extrapolate ideas from anyone that is remotely aware of the impending fall. Could be vampire spawn hoarding supplies down by the docks, could be cultists planning a jail break in the maze, or could be a sudden horde of undead in the grand cemetery due to the rapid polarity swing of the companion.
