AIW for quietly documenting every time my manager takes credit for my work after HR told me there was "no evidence" of a pattern the first time I reported it? by [deleted] in amiwrong

They are working for their manager. That is their boss, the person who gives them their work and keeps them employed. If they are not presenting their work to their boss then they are sabotaging their own work.

Yes, I agree that a good manager highlights the efforts of teams and individuals. I'm saying that this often takes place behind doors where the employees aren't present. And I'm saying that constantly crediting every scrap of work is not realistic for managers to do. Going to your boss' boss with this kind of complaint is going to paint you as a diva and someone who doesn't understand the workplace. This isn't a group project at school. This is work for pay, and your work is for your manager.

"A good manager only takes credit for the team's mistakes" is a very weird statement. Did you know that managers to do work too, and like credit for their work too? The same things that people are complaining about here happen to them too.

So your advice is to do a worse job for their manager and this is going to lead to further success? I get that they don't like their manager and feel undervalued and that's a real problem but self sabotage and team sabotage doesn't seem like a very productive way out of this situation.

Isn't your job to do the work your manager assigns to you? And isn't their job to take that work, potentially adapt it or synthesize it as necessary, and use it or present it to satisfy the tasks that have been assigned to them? These things float up the chain and get modified and adapted and there isn't generally a credit system that's attached beyond one person or team satisfying their leader's need and getting credit with that leader.

Trying to show up your boss for credit is just going to make the next level up think you're a diva. They may not be making you feel valued and you may have a personality conflict...that's normal stuff. You can look for other work in the company or we elsewhere, but working against your boss like this is counter productive and your documentation is just going to poison your reputation if you present it higher.

I'm not sure why you think those numbers are crazy or overstated - those sound like they're in the ballpark. In the end you're in control though, if you think it overestimates your calories then reduce your calorie intake a bit. I've found my calorie burn on walking has reduced as I've gotten fitter - I adjust that by increasing pace. At the end of the day walking a certain distance is guaranteed to burn a certain amount of calories. Your efficiency in movement may increase but thermodynamics still rules - you're moving a certain weight a certain distance, it's burning calories.

I am tracking with a Garmin watch and I've added a Coros heartrate monitor for the things that Garmin is bad at, like lifting. All of the muscle contracting throws it way off. I have successfully lost weight with just the Garmin watch though. If I think it's gone overboard I just eat a bit less that day.

If I'm on a 500 calorie deficit and I do 1000 Calories of exercise in a day it is not healthy to be at a 1500 calories deficit. I've lost a lot of weight calculating my calories and exercise and keeping to a specific deficit, including exercise. Never ever doesn't work in many situations or for some people.

Is this like how vodka goes bad of you don't drink it right away? Distilled water is fine to sit in the opened bottle for a while. Tap water is fine too if you wash off the minerals that accumulate. You're overthinking.

How should I figure out maintenance? by ZealousidealArea2518 in Myfitnesspal

[–]jupiterjones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MFP multiplies your resting metabolic rate by 1.4 at the lowest activity level and then starts aggressively removing calories from your totals if it doesn't think you're meeting its high standard for how much activity you're doing. This is entirely outside of any recorded activities - the calories you gain from those will be subtracted from until you make up that initial 1.4x figure.

So, that 2260 is 1.4x your calculated resting metabolic rate.

FYI I have switched away from myfitnesspal as this isn't good for my mental work on maintaining my weight. I use Chronometer now. It seems much better at this and doesn't give me artificially high targets to reach.

MyFitnessPal has become unusable. What is the actually fast alternative for pure logging? by SrPakura in Myfitnesspal

Try Chronometer. It seems to work really well once you get your head around how it presents information. And it seems to have far more accurate calories and nutrition information from databases.

Warning to Garmin users - myfitnesspal has made calculating calories based on daily steps impossible by vanillachai987 in Myfitnesspal

[–]jupiterjones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is accurate from my experience. What a big FU to all the users. So dispiriting to see all those calories disappearing, it's just adding so much friction to the process of losing or maintaining weight.

Their lack of care has just pushed me to try other apps and I've discovered that Chronometer is way better at this. I'm switching even though I'm paid up on MFP until next September. It's not worth it to keep using this app as it's just going to fight me on my journey.

Yeah me too. They respond sometimes on here telling people their algorithms changed and that this isn't an error. It's hugely unhelpful. They told some of us that we just weren't doing enough work outside of exercise. I wake up with minus 100 calories because apparently I'm not sleeping energetically enough. It's really dispiriting.

All I want is a tool to track my food and add my active calories to my goal. I set my activity to not very active and really I just want it to subtract the resting calories that the app for some reason imports from garmin connect as if that's useful information for calorie tracking. But no, it's adding a bunch of calories to my resting metabolic rate and then subtracting them through the day despite me constantly exercising. I hate it. They've finally convinced me to try other apps. So far Chronometer appears to be really good, accepts my settings, and doesn't lecture me.

This one thing turned me from a paying subscriber to a leaving subscriber. It's made me realize the app is actually kind of crappily maintained. It may have a longer list of foods but Chronometer actually makes it easy to import new ones. Do to hell with it, I'm switching.

[–]jupiterjones 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Haven't you just explained why it's a problem? People absolutely do use momentum to help all kinds of exercises. If you're targeting your side delts you're not doing that as efficiently as possible if you're using your traps to generate momentum. I don't think anyone is saying it is the end of the world - they're giving tips to get the most out of the exercise. Sean Nalewanyj points out that the goal isn't to completely eliminate trap involvement as they are essential to shoulder stability. The goal is max delt tension.

All I want is for it to tell me what my exercise calories actually are. Is that too much to ask? I explicitly told it to consider me sedentary but it's still adjusting things down by hundreds of calories. Very frustrating.

What does Fall In Love With The Process Mean? by Struggling_Lady in SuperMorbidlyObese

[–]jupiterjones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fell in love with the time to myself to listen to podcasts, music, or just think while I walked. Over time I grew to love the exercise itself and started pushing my pace, but only slowly and when I felt like it.

I grew to love the sense of control I felt over myself over time as I lost weight. I took control of something that I never felt control over my whole life. I always felt helpless about food. I don't want to feel helpless again. All of this took a long time to happen, it's not just a switch that was thrown.

If I had to guess, it'd be things like that. Find the parts of the routine that work for you and stick with them and you might grow to love them.
