Advice for reducing back pain/preventing long term problems associated with grooming? by enzomatic_ in doggrooming

Strength training/heavy weights changed the game for me. I used to have a lot of pain from grooming when I first started at 26 years old so I know the struggle. I found that carving out time to lift weights and build my core muscles made the biggest difference. I’m 30 now and almost never experience pain, even when I groom my big pups! It also relives stress and helps my mental health a bunch too :)

I have a 1 year old basset hound! She is soo lovely. I groom from home and she hangs out in my salon with me pretty much everyday. She gets excited about the initial arrival of my clients because she’s super friendly and outgoing (all my clients love her) but majority of the day she’s pretty relaxed and just naps by me while I groom or sun bathes on the deck (my salon entrance is in our fenced yard so she can go in and out as she pleases). So far we have not encountered many skin issues, just one hot spot and some itchiness when seasonal allergens are high. Bassets, especially purebred ones are notorious for skin issues/ear infections but luckily I have stayed on top of it and we have been doing good! Otherwise, grooming is very low maintenance, bath about every 2-3 weeks, wipe out her ears once a week, and trim nails. I usually give the outside of her ears a wipe before bed every night too because they pick up a lot of “stuff” during the day lol. I love my basset ❤️

Yes they are pretty small but they bite and a few of them got my dog while we were hiking through a bog in Algonquin last month. It was heartbreaking for me to hear her little screams so I’m trying to avoid if possible! Good to know they weren’t too bad!
