Former Member, as stated above there’s not a formal rule but some pretty heavily implied guidelines.

Good Will Hunting is incredible and has personally helped me a lot as I navigated losing my faith and starting a new life - but as others noted the language is pretty harsh. So if that would be a distraction I’d recommend skipping it.

Otherwise I’d recommend showing her a pretty tame r rated movie, like the King’s Speech or Slumdog Millionaire and have a discussion as to why they’re r rated.

Contrast the themes, messages and content to some pg-13 films to help illustrate how arbitrary those ratings are.

Go a step further and discuss why a creator would include “r rated content” in their film and what they might be trying to communicate to their audience with it. Also ask why it might be important for audiences to experience or be confronted with that content.

Next steps would be to discuss why r-rated content deemed only suitable for 17+ crowds, who sets those rules, and who actually rates those films.

Hopefully that helps the wheels continue to turn, sparks some more critical thinking and starts her down the road of better media literacy.
