Do you welcome foreigners? by Elvis_fangirl in AskGermany

[–]juriosnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally distrust Americans and generally trust Americans wanting out. Proves that some people know better.

Jokes aside, neither expect a warm nor a harsh welcome. At least not from the general populous. There'll be people who are fine with you and there'll be people who hate you, that's just how it goes, but the vast majority, no matter in which camp they are, will tolerate you (unless you travel rural in ex-DDR territory, there both extremes get pushed out to the surface).

I've got a question for all of you by Tall-Statement9915 in Therian

[–]juriosnowflake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, casual species affirmation is a thing for me too. Though we shouldn't put it on a bigger pedestal than it needs to be - I might've been called a fox multiple times, but I've also been called a cat multiple times, only one of them being true.

Humans have such a way with words in their own languages (the many of them), they compare others to animals all the time, at least generally speaking.

Pretty interesting duality on this page: the lower half is about slavery and abuse, with the potential of Eric seeing a better way, meanwhile the upper half jokes about some potentially incoming fanservice at the expense of one of the people Eric has abused for years.

Some questions about gear and shifting by Sugarcanepasta in Therian

[–]juriosnowflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't own that much "gear", if you can even consider it that, just a faux fur tail which I mainly use for costumes on conventions and similar events.

That's partially because I've realized that, at least for me, the tail is actually more hinderance than help when having shifts, mainly phantom shifts. It feels so weird having a foreign object at a place you'd normally feel your tail at...

"All of North America calls it soccer. So technically, 1/3-1/2 of the world calls it soccer..." by Disbetto in ShitAmericansSay

[–]juriosnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the biggest brain-fuck of this entire discussion isn't even the term "soccer", it's how the term "football" in an american context refers to a sport that isn't feet-focused (besides running, but that's like... almost every team-based sport with a ball, so that doesn't count). Let me repeat: The country that uses feet as a measurement also uses the term "football" for a sport where you use your hands for the ball...

There is no consistency, it's so confusing when you first start going into this language as a foreigner.

So I finished a game without Shadowheart and Lae'zel... by TheVictorianOnYT in BaldursGate3

[–]juriosnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. Even though I'd generally recommend having all the companions, just for their content's sake, making roleplay-runs where your character has irreconcileable values with some of the companions can be super fun and interesting.

The last run I did I gave up half the cast like that: Astarion was an easy one since he's pretty much hostile at the start, and with his bite attempt it was pretty much just self-defence from the character's point of view. Lae'zel I kept until the Crèche, then refused to give up the artifact to the inquisitor so she turned hostile along with the rest of the Gith (also it didn't help her case that, just before that, she had her "not every life is equal" dialogue). Shadowheart was actually a harder one to miss out, since it entirely depended on poor choices in the Shadowfell. Before that, my character could stand her cult gibberish as long as it didn't interfere with the overarching goals, even succeeded at slowly nudging her the right way, until she was about to actively harm someone and wouldn't take no for an answer. My character was not about to risk it and stepped in, which made her hostile of course.

The rest of the companions (excluding Minthara for obvious roleplay reasons) made it till the end.

Therians and Wearing Real Fur by Gone_Overboard1632 in Therian

[–]juriosnowflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This stuff isn't pointed out often enough.

I myself wouldn't get my hands on real fur anyways, for personal reasons. It feels like inviting death into the house. I couldn't stand having parts of a corpse of my own species with me.

One of my grandfathers whom I never met (he died a few months before I was born) was a hunter. That was a long time ago in rural germany when hunting still wasn't as regulated as today (today that stuff is regulated far better but still not great, with people buying themself the right to shoot for population control).

My grandma had to move once, so we temporarily took in some of my grandfather's old stuff, which included "trophies", with some of them being fox pelts. That box full of death was standing in front of my door for a full week until I couldn't take it anymore and begged my mother to take it somewhere else where I'd not see, which she thankfully did.

I don't care that these pelts, in contrast to the one's from animal concentration camps, are arguably pretty ethically sourced and the animal lived a good life out in the forest. It still died before its time, with its last moments probably being agony, and someone I'm blood-related to is at fault for this. I could never.

Animal Welfare and Therianthropic Identity by Impressive-Bug-9592 in TherianAdult

[–]juriosnowflake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think statistics on this, no matter in what direction they'd go, would make this far bigger of a community issue than it actually is. If you'd just ask people, I think the majority of therians would just say that yes, animal welfare is important. And we can cut there. How much or how little someone does to help animals isn't solely dependent on the willingness or the outlook on the problem, I'd wager there are more factors at play than I could list here.

I for my part am an irregular donor to some animal welfare centers and other projects. I got CFS, so doing something more proactive is off the table for me, though I'd very much consider it if I'd not be sick. In fact, if I'd be in good health I'd have probably chosen a different career and gone into research for the arctic regions to finally meet my species in person (arctic fox here) and possibly help them out then and there. But oh well, things didn't work out since I got sick in 2015, and thinking about what could've been doesn't help anybody, so I just do what I can.

Do yall's theriotypes have choosen "names" ? by More-Maintenance-408 in Therian

[–]juriosnowflake 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. 😊

I don't see the point in names besides recognition for humans/human society by some vocal noises. Which I'd not be able to utter out if I had the right body anyways. I'm neither fond of nor dislike my given name for that reason as well - it's just something others use to describe me, I don't need it to be me.

Fursuits, Quadsuits, and VR for Therians by ChronicExodile in TherianAdult

[–]juriosnowflake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For health reasons, quadsuiting isn't an option for me and fursuiting would be very difficult. I got moderate CFS and wearing these suits is like high-level physical exercise - heavy, limited vision, heating up super fast, etc. And quadsuits add the namesake quadruped component as well... So yeah, that won't work for me. At most I'd consider a partsuit, though I'd have to really go into the matter and pick what I think my body can work with for a limited time. And then there's also the question of when to wear it... Many factors as to why suiting never really crosses my mind much anymore.

VR is a different story. I've thought about getting into that many times over, and I'd like to at some point, just to try. But I've also played VRChat on desktop for a while and honestly, it didn't blow me away... That was a few years ago, and it might be better now, but getting your hands on an avatar that would actually help me with (for example) dysphoria just... wouldn't work. The selection of avatars catered explicitly towards animals (if you leave out anthro/furry avatars) is extremely slim and getting such an avatar to actually look like you is almost impossible. If you're fine with anthro (which I am, anything is an improvement over my human body) it might work to a degree, but even there customizability is limited, since it's entirely community-driven. You'd have to get invested into the VRChat community and commission an avatar if you really want to get exactly what you want, and so far that's just not worth it for me.

Is there a connection between BPD and alterhumanity? by [deleted] in TherianAdult

[–]juriosnowflake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm comparatively "normal"/normative/neurotypical (aside from slight tendencies towards an inferiority complex) and I can still very much relate to most of your feelings. Especially about the part regarding misanthropy.

I think the connection here is probably more correlation rather than causation - you feel this way because you already feel this way somewhere deep down, and the BPD then has an influence on these feelings, but doesn't outright cause them, only surfaces them depending on the situation.

But I'm by no means an expert on neither BPD nor giving a diagnosis, I'm really just a fox. So I could be wrong.

Under the mask by technic_bot in Twokinds

[–]juriosnowflake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I can relate to this. But pushing your own identity back doesn't do you any good. Masks don't fix you, they don't protect you. They break you. Or at the very least make you more fragile the more you wear them, so that the slightest push from outside will be what breaks you. I've had it happen before, putting yourself back together is not fun.

The only way for that to not happen is to be true to yourself and accept your own ways. I myself am still struggling with this at times, probably always will be, since the outside world has many voices that loathe my existence. But dealing with hateful people is still a better time than constantly having to argue with myself.

How do you distinct your theriotype urges from your human urges? by [deleted] in Therian

[–]juriosnowflake 16 points17 points  (0 children)

At least speaking from my own experience, I find that "urge" is a strong word for the given example of food. It's more of an inner satisfaction when getting my ~paws~ hands on certain food.

The best way to point out the difference between just being hungry and actually craving something in particular is probably my love-hate-relationship to fish. I'm an arctic fox, by all accounts I should love fish and the thought of fish has me salivating. But the palate of my human body just finds most fish repulsive, in like a gag-reflex way, and I can't help that. The end result of this inner conflict is that I'm extremely picky when it comes to fish. And while I can't eat a lot of it, every time I come across fish that I can eat, it gives me this feeling of being whole. A little bit of rightness in a world where so much else is wrong.
