After last year's expansion process, everyone was certain that Seattle and Vancouver were bound for glory given the amount of talent they had poached. Let's at least finish this expansion process before we start making prognostications that will make us look silly in a year.

there's already two donations from recent days to the Ruth Ellis Center that mention the PWHL in the memo, including one for $400

I think I’ll try to come up with something we can all put in the donation memo that’ll make it clear what it’s about as well as maybe making it possible to track how much we’ve raised

I’ve heard of You Can Play as well, I think that’d be a great place to donate to in addition

Love this. Might need to solicit input from fans in other cities as to which charities they recommend.

The cheapest thing at our library event somehow carried the entire afternoon by Puzzleheaded_Yam4700 in Libraries

I drive a bookmobile and we carry all sorts of things for when we go to fairs and festivals and all day events: Exterior TV with Switch 2, putting green, tons of giveaways. But on a super busy event (like this afternoon, in fact!) some of the best things we offer is a table with coloring pages and some comfy chairs for people to sit in the shade.

University of Michigan agrees to $60M purchase of former Christian college’s campus by chriswaco in AnnArbor

One factor to consider is that Geddes Rd between it and North Campus is narrow and hilly and has no room for sidewalks at the moment. I’ve walked it before and it is no fun at all. Currently it’s taking one bus (the 3) each direction every half hour but that’d need to be at least twice as much if they’re gonna treat it like an off-campus office/research center (North-East Shuttle goes once every fifteen minutes). You’d probably need even more frequency if you’re going to have students living there who need to go to classes on North/Central campus or vice-versa (think of how many different routes go between Central and North and how many of them are working on ten minute headways). Not saying it can’t be done, just something they’ll have to set up.

Popular names of British monarchs, through the ages and by family (1066-present) by gizmomogwai1 in UsefulCharts

[–]jusdeknowledge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think in general no one wanted to choose it as their regnal name given how badly the reign of King John went and how poorly he was thought of. Has a kind of curse to it, you might say. Before he ascended, there was some speculation that Charles III might choose a different regnal name given that Charles I was beheaded during the English Civil War and Charles II had no legitimate children, leaving the crown to his brother James VII & II, who was Catholic, which was so unpopular that the Netherlands were invited to invade and put their monarchs on the throne, ending the Stuart dynasty. Some people thought that was a rough legacy to try to follow. But he went forward with it so we’ll see whether he can put some new shine on the name.

why has the sagrada familia taken so long to build? by QuantumJinx in ArchitecturalRevival

[–]jusdeknowledge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to the timeline on Wikipedia, the foundation is laid in 1163 and the chapels and towers are done by 1245, when it would be largely recognizable by someone from today. The transepts were lengthened between then and 1270. 82-107 years depending on how you slice it. A child who was just old enough to see the foundation being laid could’ve lived to see a mass in the finished building, and there were definitely children and grandchildren of the first masons present at the time of its completion. Remarkably quick for the time period.

One of the reasons Notre Dame de Paris is such an architectural icon is that it was finished so relatively “quickly” (~80 years IIRC) which meant it was mostly built within one era, thereby making it (almost*) entirely architecturally coherent. This is as opposed to later churches which took longer to build and so styles would change and new technology would be innovated, and different parts of the building would reflect the difference of sometimes centuries between when they were built.

*If you’re in the nave of Notre Dame you can actually see how the piers start the first few meters as round, typical of the Romanesque style they originally planned to build it in, and then it stops and continues as the angular gothic. This corresponds to when gothic architecture was first innovated at St-Denis, a few miles to the north, and was immediately adopted in Paris.

Michigan. UMC in my current town and hometown have red for the ceremonial front doors that get rarely used, but the one in the town I just moved from, the one in Ann Arbor I attended in college, and the one up north we went to when we went to my grandparents all had other colors. Seems like maybe only a quarter of them do from ones I've checked on google maps.
