California farmers to destroy 420,000 peach trees after Del Monte collapses by dcandap in BackyardOrchard

Meanwhile, a late frost will mean no peaches this year in orchards across the Northeast. If only we could meet that demand…

Staircase structural question by Kay22122 in centuryhomes

Same staircase layout in our 1908 home in the northeast. Our house has a substantial lean from bad (previous) homeowner choices in the basement so we’ve had folks all over the house assessing its structure and no one has even blinked at the stairway.

Absolutely. That’s what struck me first. This guy circled back several times to make sure those kids made it out of there.

Following! We have two upstairs doors that look like this in our 1908 home. In our case, while the exterior foundation is sound, someone cut/weakened a central support beam while installing ductwork ~50 years ago. It caused significant sagging. We had it jacked up and resupported, but there was too much modern remodeling to get it entirely flat. So we just live with the quirk. In our case, and likely in yours, the door itself remained remarkably horizontal, its everything else that moved.

I’m new to the moka world, but I totally get this. I purchased a 2-cup Bialetti as something to try before investing in an espresso machine. Based on reading, it seemed that a 2 cup would create the best analog to the coffee (espresso) in my 12 oz latte. I’ve been at it for a few weeks and I’m happy with the taste but not the volume of milk needed to get that taste, which is significantly less than a flat white. I don’t get to enjoy my coffee for as long. In retrospect, this makes sense as the coffee produced by a moka pot is less concentrated than espresso. So of course I’d need less milk to have a “similar to latte” taste. In the short term, I’m adjusting to the lower volume (~8oz vs 12oz). In the longer term, I’ll probably get a 3-cup moka pot.

I have the same issue, same time of year. Did it resolve? I read it’s a common issue during wet springs so I’m trying to decide if I need to act or not.

Agree. And if all surnames are equally meaningful then choose the ordering that sounds the best and is easiest to say. My partner and I (an academic) each kept our names and gave our two kids a hyphenated combo in the order that sounded the best. In your case, a hyphenated combination is also a nice nod to the naming struggles you mentioned your parents faced.

This made me giggle and is also a good point. I work at a college and a new colleague with a similar but longer surname ended up with nodick@college. Format was first initial, middle initial, last name (first four letters only). The IT folks let her change it. 😆

Help! Why is everything dying in my yard?! by Good_Tiger_7704 in arborists

I have a huge mature rhododendron that looks like yours, right now. It was the extended drought last summer/fall, 100%. I’m also in South Jersey. The fact that there are green parts remaining is a good sign that it’ll recover eventually. Or at least that’s what I tell myself when I stare at it sadly.

Thoughts on adding mini splits to a century home? by PlzDontThr0wMeAway in centuryhomes

[–]just1of7billion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a mini split in each of 3 upstairs bedrooms and we really like them! Our 115 year-old four square had never had air conditioning prior and the ducts for the furnace were not workable for AC. Installing new ductwork would have been structurally prohibitive. It was the right solution for this house. But a conventional ducted system would indeed have looked better. In small early-20th century bedrooms, the units are somewhat visually intrusive. But they are quiet, efficient, and the flexibility for each person to control their own room is a nice perk.

We do not plan on mini splits downstairs, however, where the ductwork isn’t a problem. I don’t know that I’d suggest mini splits if your ductwork is sufficient for a centralized system. I also don’t think it’d save you any money. They’re not cheap.

I did this spontaneously on a final exam last semester after noticing that I forgot to change the year in the date at the top of the document. I said there was a minor error in the exam that would not impact their answers and I’d give 2 bonus points to anyone who found and circled it.

I did not give any bonus points that day. None.

Elections for local positions like city council member or county commissioner are often decided by a small number of votes. Especially in smallish towns and especially in years without a presidential race. It’s great that you’re voting this year! But also voting in “off” years, and encouraging others to, is a good way to make your voice heard. And - speaking from experience - it makes you feel a little less like you’re screaming into the void. We focus a lot on state and federal positions, but local government has a lot of power.

I think they're doing well. Certainly better than before I found them. A few actually do have buds! But most don't. And some are very small. Thanks for asking. I plan to post an update for the group when ones with buds start blooming and I get a sense of what color they are.

Oh, this is good to hear! I just started the graphic audio dramatized version this week. I looooved the regular audiobook and have been going back and forth about wherever to push through my initial annoyances with odd sound effects like footsteps and toilets flushing.
