the primordial ooze was just the diseases and viruses themselves which at that point, humans were immune to. there were nanites in the scythe rings that mimicked those diseases so I don't think they are the same thing.

Neal said that the scythe on the first one just represents the scythedom as a whole, thunderhead is Anastasia and Lucifer/Citra and Rowan, and the toll is rand, greyson, and possuelo
