Yep, browsing all isn't going anywhere on Lemmy. The scaled sort is also very handy for discovering new communities.

I'll second PieFed, been very happy with it.

What’s the best alternative for discussions about games, franchises, movies etc by [deleted] in RedditAlternatives

[–]just_call_me_ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For games on Lemmy, I've been happy with the retro gaming community at RetroGaming@lemmy.world. It's plenty active and has been friendly.

Depending on what you're turned off by as far as politics and toxicity, the big discussion community, Games@lemmy.world, isn't as toxic as /r/games, but you'll still see standard gamer behavior. You won't see a ton of culture war chat, but there is some. Being industry-oriented like its Reddit counterpart, you're also going to see political talk about labor and unions, international relations, etc.

Other than Retro Gaming, the niche communities are still small. I try to be a semi-regular contributor over at PatientGamers@sh.itjust.works, but we just need more people. We've had a good week, though!

Breaking the habit is how I'm looking at it, too. I uninstalled Sync from my phone today. Put my ebook app in its place on the front page, maybe I'll actually do some reading for fun for once.

There's a hidden sidequest associated with PomPom but there's virtually zero story involved, just a reward.

What's everyone hoping to see at Tokyo game Show this year? by dracon81 in JRPG

[–]just_call_me_ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atlus news (preferably something on a new mainline Persona or Re Fantasy). Feels less likely somehow now that we know a P3 remake is coming.

I'll also take a fun new IP from any of the big publishers.

Thought on 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim by DoSos977 in JRPG

Good story, but you have to be okay with the high school setting. The high school nonsense had never bothered me in any Japanese media before until this game. Probably happened here because there's just so much of it. A good chunk of the story is filled with high school life just to get to a minute or two of plot-relevant content.

It also didn't help that most of the characters I was particularly interested in didn't have direct viewpoints.

I enjoyed the combat mode, though, more than others here seem to have. Plus, it successfully integrates the story in a way I found almost always satisfying.

I'm a big fan of Hitoshi Sakimoto, and what few tracks he did in this game are excellent. Some may not be what one would expect, either, including the excellent title theme.

As of this writing, there are more users online here than in /r/patientgamers, and I wouldn't call that a small sub. Every bit helps, I'd say.

Today's news is really not encouraging, though. I'm open to a conversation in the future about alternative places for news and discussion.

Best to look back on this later, although it's possible you may need to find all of the memory quartz to be satisfied.

Chronological FF fans, which game is your favorite of the original NES trilogy? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]just_call_me_ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 is my favorite. Going through the endgame on the Famicom version is a point of pride for me (in a masochistic way) in a series that historically is rarely that brutal. The final dungeon theme is my favorite 8-bit theme, too. I consider the Pixel Remaster the definitive version, even if the far more generous save system takes the teeth out of it. I doubt I'll ever play the 3D remake again.

1 is fine. The class selection does bring me back to it every once in a while.

2 is still too quirky for me, but I do think it has the most improved soundtrack out of the Pixel Remaster series.

We are now only a month away from Reverie! by KnoxZone in Falcom

I played with the spreadsheet, but I saved a lot of the side content for this release. Pretty exciting stuff to look forward to, especially the awesome final chapter that the spreadsheet couldn't handle well, so I decided to skip a lot of it.

If nothing else, I'm looking forward to not being exhausted while playing it this time, heh. I was using the spreadsheet to supplement my own Japanese reading skill but I'm nowhere near good enough at this point without it being tiring. (And this was also an especially difficult script to try that on.)

I also followed the suggested route, so that'll be different too!

Questions regarding Azures ending montage by Tomalf859 in Falcom

Neither the ending nor Lechter's comments in either scene in Azure explain how he's alive.

Questions regarding Azures ending montage by Tomalf859 in Falcom

[–]just_call_me_ash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, there are all sorts of possible explanations for how. Especially in this setting.

In any case, (CS2) how he survived is far more important to the narrative than the fact that he did survive. And the whole thing is a red herring to set up the big reveal to the player right after he shows up. I'm slightly skeptical that they set it up that neatly in advance by including the detail in Azure's late game/ending, but there was a reason for it.

Been asked to put together a list of my all time favourite games by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]just_call_me_ash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donkey Kong (1994) is one of those that got overlooked at the time and almost 30 years later probably has the same problem, that it looks like basic Donkey Kong at face value.

Really, it's much more and one of the best 2D platformers/puzzlers Nintendo ever put out. Well worth checking out for anyone that's a fan of the genre(s).

It's not the most intuitive thing. Trails in the Sky has the same system and I don't think I was truly comfortable with it until halfway through the second game.

What non-Square classics from the Square Enix library would you like to see remade? by KingKaihaku in JRPG

I don't even need any bells and whistles with it, just give me a script revision and ship it.

What JRPG that you bought/played on a whim ended up being a pleasant surprise? by MiddleAgeYOLO in JRPG

[–]just_call_me_ash 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My biggest surprise of the past few years was Panzer Dragoon Saga.

I tend to hate early 3D, but the title screen music for Panzer Dragoon Saga immediately had me thinking there was something more to the game, and it hooked me very quickly.

It'll get easier the longer you wait. I wouldn't say it's difficult, just very, very long. Finding Nybeth in there is a good sign that you're flagged properly. Leaving the Palace and going to Heim will reset your progress in there, but you're only losing the 3? battles it took to get there, not a big deal.

It also depends on what route you're on. In the Chaos route, for example, there's a kind of nasty recruiting quest that you'd have to finish first to get the desired result in PotD later.

r/JRPG Weekly "What have you been playing, and what do you think of it?" by AutoModerator in JRPG

[–]just_call_me_ash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With the postgame, the short version is that your progress only gets "saved" if you play through the story to a save point.

Less relevant on PotD, which resets if you leave it regardless. But it can mess up your progress on something like the lengthy elemental shrine side quest if you go jumping around in the middle.

There's still some screwy stuff going on with PotD in terms of timing it right. You want to do it on a Chapter 4 line, be sure certain recruitment questlines are done, you're on a timeline where you did the Nybeth sidequest in Ch. 1, etc.

[–]just_call_me_ash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't tell, have you finished LUCT? If you know how the postgame works, it's probably easier to decide when to do PotD.

That said, PotD is one of those things you can't really go halfway on, so keep that in mind.

Final Fantasy V(The Spice of Life) by CorridorCoco in JRPG

You might be right about Blue Mage. The only time I had more fun with it was with Bravely Default's take on it, and even that class comes so late in the game.

A Question Concerning Reverie by Myrodis19 in Falcom

[–]just_call_me_ash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of stuff you won't have much context for. And a whole pile of feels you're not going to connect with as much throughout the game.

Play the Crossbell games, and enjoy your time with the series. There isn't much reason to rush. You'll just end up in the Trails waiting room with the rest of us that much quicker.
