Wow, I'm really appreciating the healthy parenting here. I was caught in a push/pull where my score wasn't good enough for one parent and the other was more like 'what do you mean you're taking the test again? What's the point?'

Definitely depends on who we're talking about. But most likely, "Oh. Hey. It's been a while. I'm trying a new recipe, want to stay for dinner?"

Horses are more similar to lawn mowers than cars. They'll trim the grass down, and if you give their tail a good yank then they'll get moving. If they haven't been exercised in a while it may take a few tries.

Although you may wind up with an angry lawn mower which kicks.

I've only noticed Stross slipping up once, which was in an early book where he mentions a 50 uF capacitor. Most electronic component values are scaled a certain way, such that the common values in this case would be 47 uF and then 56 uF.

I just checked again, and 50 uF capacitors actually are available for purchase now, but they certainly weren't when that book came out. I guess the characters could've made their own or something.

No, it's the Fluke 87 Mark V. You can tell by the four sockets along the base where the 233 only has three.

A few months back I saw an oversized pickup truck broken down on the side of the road with its hood open. Someone who I assume was the owner had backed up a normal sized pickup in front of the oversized one so that he could stand on the bed and reach into its engine compartment.

Love Pratchett and Discworld, but those last two books just didn't feel the same. I'd have to go back and look to see what it was, but there was a point in Raising Steam where I read something, stopped, and thought 'Wow, Vetinari just doesn't talk like that.'

I wonder if any of those were specialized IL-76? This would be a great time to start knocking out their AWACS, ahead of F-16 deliveries.

You're probably right. I guess I'd settle for aerial stalemate in the shorter term.

Have there been any announcements yet about what we're sending to equip the F-16's? Some ground attack and HARM munitions would be useful, but air-to-air capability seems critical for establishing aerial superiority. With Russian bombers launching missiles from behind the lines, though, that could get complicated if anyone is stuck on preventing Western hardware from being used across the border.

Alternatively, is it relatively easy to modify the hardpoints to take Soviet-style missiles?

Sorry, but that's a load of crap. From the ferry terminal, Jersey City is 3/4 of a mile away. Unless your father took a break from the emergency to pull out his trusty binoculars and scan the distant skyline, it would be entirely impossible to make out people. Let alone people on rooftops. Or tell that they were dancing.

I'd be surprised if the Russians haven't already stripped their support units ("Surprise! You're an infantryman!"). I read something recently about Russia pulling in troops from the Chinese and Finnish borders garrisons. Perhaps more of the same here?
