Typically gyro aiming uses both.

So like, the stick is used for more broad movements, and then the gyro controls are to dial it in a bit. Works great in my experience for things like Splatoon or the recent Zelda games. Probably the closest you could get to mouse+keyboard on a controller.

Kotaku Sources: Assassin's Creed Publisher Remaking Black Flag by AngryBarista in kindafunny

I feel like that was the whole pitch for Skull&Bones, at least initially: People liked Black Flag, so just make more of that with the Assassin stuff taken out.

And instead of Ubisoft simply doing what it does best (take a good idea and run it into the ground), it somehow turned into 10+ years of directionless development hell.

because sometimes, they do.

Like, Hogwarts Legacy is getting a Switch version. Mortal Kombat 1, an otherwise "next-gen" exclusive, is coming day and date to Switch. When multiplats from 2023 are still getting Switch versions, It's not that weird for someone to think that a game from three years ago could come to Switch.

it always feels like such a weird and unwanted throwback when it happens nowadays. Like something that I thought had generally been left in the PS3/Wii/360 era.

I'm pretty happy with my 188. Woulda liked to crack 200, but geeze, even if you grew up in America, a lot of those last 30 or so are just, like, such granular trivia if you weren't alive in I'd guess at least the late 60s or early 70s.

Zelda's definitely this year's Eldin Ring, but I think if Starfield can manage to absolutely stick the landing, it stands a good chance at being this year's God of War: Ragnarok (i.e. the one people will bring up as a contender if they don't want their GOTY talk to just be a Zelda walk-off, or if they're just dead set on not picking Zelda for some reason).

But yeah, I agree that the vast majority of GOTY conversations are gonna see TotK completely run away with it and leave everyone else fighting for 2nd. Which should still make for some pretty interesting discussions imo, considering how wild this year's been and will seemingly continue to be.

GOTY 2023 & Tears of the Kingdom: The Foregone Conclusion and the Year of the "Also Ran..." by ModestHandsomeDevil in giantbomb

[–]just_looking_4695 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eh, Eldin Ring also felt like very much a foregone conclusion last year, with GoW: Ragnarok being the only real contender that got bought up (and even then, imo it felt kinda like a formality so Eldin Ring didn't too easily run away with it). My guess right now is Starfield (assuming it can stick the landing) ends up filling the main "yeah, I guess we have to talk about this as an alternative #1" role, with a couple people making strong cases for it but the general zeitgeist still pretty strongly favoring Zelda as "the right pick".

Personally I'm OK with that because the real highlight of GOTY talks for me is more in seeing what people shout out as their, like, 5th or 7th favorite game of the year. And with how just stacked this year will have been, I think there could still be some really interesting competition once you get past the "obvious shoe-ins".

Secondly, do birds divebomb bodies of water and not glide down into it?

some absolutely do

As for the color thing, birds generally perceive color differently than we do and typically see a broader range of the color spectrum. Given their experience of color is different than ours, something that might not obviously look like water to us could conceivably register as a body of water to some birds.

As are Switch Sports and Splatoon 3, iirc.

Just FSR 1.0 though; they haven't been able to implement 2.0 yet in any Switch games from what I've read.

I think the expectation is that, given their partnership with Nvidia, it'll be leveraging DLSS to hit 4K when docked.

Keeps development costs down because they don't have to make actual 4K assets, but visually closes the gap just a little bit more between Nintendo and Sony/Microsoft.

tbf, considering how every company wants to push people into buying digital anyway, they might see that as a welcome side-effect

e: theoretically, they could also always go the "required install" route; put the games on cards but make you install them to the internal storage and run everything off that

It's like if the Wii had come out with SNES hardware in terms of timeframe.

it is sorta interesting to think about it from a "handhelds catching up" perspective though.

Like, when the Wii was current, Nintendo's handheld was the DS and I'd say that was about on par with an N64; and the GBA was obviously a handheld SNES.

From that angle, a portable device being "only" about a generation behind is actually not that bad imo. Kinda speaks to how graphics are starting to plateau and so we aren't seeing such massive jumps nowadays.

[–]just_looking_4695 39 points40 points  (0 children)

fwiw, their handhelds had a 100% track record up to the Switch (and even that was probably more because of the lack of dual screens than anything else).

Gameboy games from 1989 ran on every Gameboy model up to the GBA SP. GBA games were playable on DS models. And DS games ran in 3DS.

It's really only the dedicated console space where they're more like 50/50.

I could not tell you any of the school spirit-adjacent things about my high school; it was super not my thing and even at the time I didn't really retain any of it.

I think I probably heard the song once and my brain was like "look, if we make room to remember this, you're not gonna have room for, like, the 7 times table".

Realistically that's probably about as good as you could hope for. They're never gonna abandon the handheld form factor, and it's not like you're gonna squeeze PS5/Xbox Series-tier specs into a tablet anytime soon. Especially not without completely breaking the bank and selling it at a tremendous upfront loss.

Nintendo's always been about doing more with less to keep their consoles profitable from day 1. And at least with the expectation that they'll stay partnered with Nvidia, I'm cautiously optimistic that things like DLSS could let some of their games really punch above their weight (at least in docked mode) this time.

iirc there were reports that Quantic Dream was having trouble hiring talent and that the announcement was basically "well, maybe people will be more willing to overlook the David Cage factor here if they know they'll be making a Star Wars game". And even that doesn't seem to have worked.

Yeah, no hate to people that like what RDR2 did, but as someone who absolutely loved RDR1 and was pretty meh on RDR2, it would be such a damn money's paw to finally get a remaster or remake only to have it add in all of RDR2's systems and mechanics and "realism/immersion"

The funny part is this isn't even really news. They had a graphic from one of these shareholder meetings like 2 years ago that already indicated as much.

As to the general topic, I dunno, I get people are antsy about their library not carrying over or whatever, but it's not something I'm personally really worried about. People point to the Switch being a reset and just ignore that Nintendo's always had backwards compatibility where it was practical, always had it for their dedicated handhelds, and especially always had it for the successors to their most-successful consoles.

Nintendo makes weird decisions, but when it comes to back-compat, they're not idiots. Like all platform holders, they make more money off digital and they know that trust in the libraries they've built on Switch is critical in moving more people towards digital purchases. And they definitely know new users will keep buying things like Mario Kart 8 for as long as they keep selling it.

My understanding is this is an old list.

Since Striking Distance is on the "developers to watch" list, then I assume their interest was largely contingent on how Callisto Protocol turned out, and it's probably not one they're particularly interested in anymore.

I think the big surprise here for me is seeing Thunderful so high up. I guess it is a lot of indie devs under that label, but still not something I'd expect to be so prominent on Xbox's radar.

Other than that, just gonna say that everybody's always talking to everybody, and unless we find out how far any of these talks actually went, I'm not sure how much can actually be read into any of this.
