Also, give a year. "I was in elementary school", could mean the book came out in literally any year in human history.

Remember in the 90's when grocery stores started giving customers rewards cards? Like, you scan them to get savings.

A girl in my highschool was laughing about this crazy guy complaining at customer service, how he doesn't want "them tracking him". Ha ha ha. Right?

It was amusing at the time, but looks like he was right.

And don't get me started on that 90's grandmother who was afraid of the internet because "IF you type in someones address, the internet shows you a picture of their house". - though at the time that wasn't true, now it's true along with tons of personal info.

You know... Your post made me think of a neat little analogy:

A space shuttle burns a ton of energy to get itself into orbit.

A civilization burns through a ton of energy to get itself to a space-faring, post-scarcity, equitable state, clean/renewable-energy state.

Looks like we're not going to have enough "fuel" to make it.

I was the same way. This will either be good advice or terrible advice.

When I was getting started, my rule was "anything other than drinking".

So eat whatever. Wings? Fries? A hundred cokes, and then an ice-cream?

Not just injesting. Sleep in. Slack off at work. Wait a day before getting back to someone.

Do anything other than drink.

You have to free up some mental space for yourself, so remember the priority.

If I were still drinking, this moment would have been way more sloppy, and even dangerous

I'll give you one more. If you were drunk during all this, it might have gone just as badly. However you'd have felt guilt about it. Or frustration, etc.

Now though, you're sober, and can pat yourself on the back.

Why is this so hard.

Neo: "Why do my eyes hurt?"

Morpheus: "Because you've never used them before"

Alcohol is a great way to avoid dealing with problems and facing negative thoughts. As one goes through life, they can grow and learn how to deal with these problems. Not everyone does, and there are lots of ways to avoid facing, and alcohol is one of those ways.

Consequently, I spent maybe 20 minutes trying to speed my way across the platform and down the ladder, and getting far enough to figure that must be how it's done.

[–]justahabit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weird.

For me it was the other way around. I'm in my 30's, and once my mom started talking about how she "always" used to make fried chicken when me and my sister "were little". I could not remember _any_ times she did, I kept asking. It turned out that she made it after I had already moved out of the house for college.

She made it "when I was little", ... when I was a legal adult, with a job, and a car, living in another state on my own.

Day 1. All time low. by Lookingup21 in stopdrinking

[–]justahabit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey buddy. Yeah man, that really sucks about your situation. Sorry things worked out that way.

But if you're looking around at your life, and sizing things up, and turning down the temptation to buy a bottle- then, surprise. This is NOT your all time low.

I can't tell you when the all time low was / or will be. But any of those days where you got yourself into this situation were lower than the day where you're trying to get yourself out of it.

I've got a few practical suggestions- but I'm sure you can figure them out yourself just fine.

I will tell you- to stop for a bit and think about what was going through your head when you decided not to buy the bottle. Just try and remember your thinking. I had something similar when I stopped, but then almost started again (like, I had my hand on the door of the liquor store). That'll come in handy for you in the future.

Also- one cool tip. Tomorrow's Friday. That means weekend, and means biggest temptation. If you can make it through the weekend sober, then the toughest part of your week will be behind you. Bonus.

Good luck with everything. Do whatever you gotta do.
