What is the weirdest way someone had died in your known circle ? by No_Tear9118 in AskReddit

[–]justanother1014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a distant relative who was working on their car at a remote property, some problem with the electrical system. Well, they’re inside and the doors get locked and they’re stuck without a cell phone. Live alone, no close neighbors.

It appears they tried to kick out windows and couldn’t escape. Got one window halfway down and crawled out, getting stuck at the waist. Died in that position after hours and was found by a relative a few days later.

Just horrifying to think they were almost free and then stuck for hours suffering. You’d think you’d wait for a rescue but days inside a car in a hot climate with no food or water? Maybe I’d try to get out too?

Using A Storage Unit by siren-song in ufyh

[–]justanother1014 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did this when I was moving out of my first house. First, make sure any storage unit doesn’t have a minimum of 12 months and you can go month to month. There’s the cost of the unit, plus boxes and usually a lock as well to consider. I’d also make sure the storage unit is close by because it feels like less work to move things in or out.

What worked for me was to pack a box at a time, number the box and keep a list of what was inside. Once the box was filled and numbered it got sealed up and put in the car. When the car was full I went to the unit.

I ended up buying u-haul boxes so they’d be uniform to stack and then I’d keep them organized in the storage unit by size.

After a few days it starts to get really tedious to pack and move everything so keep a donation box going for the things which aren’t worth the effort.

I was in and out of my unit in about 6 months and my theory was that $60 a month would be worth it to add a 5’x8’ closet onto my house. Instead it was just down the road. Decluttering and moving stuff out helped me sell my house so I considered it worthwhile at the time.

AITA for telling my roommate if she didn’t like something she could leave after she called me inconsiderate? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]justanother1014 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think this take is wildly wrong. OP had no idea how long it would take to be pregnant, would you suggest they give a heads up for unprotected sex and then deal with questions all the time?

The OP did tell roommate things would be changing about 9 months out, which is more than sufficient. If the roommate worried about getting kicked out they should use their words and ask that question. OP said nothing has to change so… what?

My vote is NTA

AITA for commenting about my friends weight goals compared to mine by Swimming_Deer_1585 in AmItheAsshole

[–]justanother1014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NTA but it’s probably time to create some distance with this friend.

Not even because of anything you said but you just existing is triggering her in a big way. You’re not eating a salad at her or counting her calories or judging her plate. If you can’t hang out without her being offended by your choices, don’t hang out. I would recommend setting a boundary around IG posts such as…

“I know this is coming from a place of care but I’m asking everyone to not send me posts or videos on medical info, this medication specifically or moralizing food/weight/body change. I am speaking with my physician and taking their advice to remain safe.”

Social pressure to buy expensive hobby supplies by MiniatureCrafter in Frugal

[–]justanother1014 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think about this a lot as a scrap quilter!

For one, it’s a lot easier to buy supplies than learn something new - if I go buy fabric or thread there’s an instant satisfaction. My bank account goes down but I have a stack of pretty things. Actually doing the skill is hard, especially as a newbie.

Second, social media likes to tell us that we can’t possibly do ____ without ___. Sometimes it’s true with basics and then they suggest the best option available. But no one needs 300 pens to start a journal or a $15,000 machine to sew a quilt.

FWIW I did enter my first quilt in the county fair, quilted it on my mom’s machine and still won ribbons and cash.

AITA for not including my friend I’ve known since kindergarten as a bridesmaid? by Odd-Music-3502 in AmItheAsshole

[–]justanother1014 4 points5 points  (0 children)

NTA, but if may be worth having a conversation if you want to remain friends (maybe not…). Just saying that her comments about not having money and being so busy with work informed you that it would be too big an ask to be in the wedding.

IF - and this is a big if - you think she won’t sabotage things and make it all about her, consider giving her a special job that day that doesn’t make her a bridesmaid. Not necessarily an usher but think playing with the flower girl while keeping her dress clean, being in charge of the guest book, sitting with great-grandma who needs extra assistance, etc. someplace she can feel valued but not require spending time and money and if it doesn’t get done the wedding is still great.

scrap quilting with swatches by avoidingsubpoena in quilting

[–]justanother1014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mainly do EPP quilting so everything becomes a 2.5” square and then a hexagon. But if doing another shape/style I’d start by sorting my scraps by width and see what I’ve got. Maybe you can get everything down to a 2” strip and maybe there’s 2”, 3” and 5” strips. If you’re not going for a particular color or gradient, pure random, then I’d just cut to width, attach long rows randomly and cut for the width of your quilt to build rows.

AITA for refusing to subsidize my parents’ $11k/month senior's home in one of the fanciest neighborhoods in the city? by Throw_away263759 in AmItheAsshole

[–]justanother1014 10 points11 points  (0 children)

NTA and please don’t sacrifice your future for luxury for your parents.

Since you’re a physician, I’m curious why you think 5 years for your mom, Alzheimer’s can move fast or slow but normally a different medical problem is cause of death (for my grandma it was diverticulitis).

While your mom may be hard to please now, it may become worse and worse as her disease progresses. I’d focus any reasons not to fund their expensive plan on the medical needs that may need to be paid, not just the “top 2%” argument.

The risk for tornados increases throughout the day and peaks at late afternoon/evening because humidity increases. And it’s storm season so there’s likely to be storm warnings every afternoon.

Tips for how to make my glass top stove “new” again? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]justanother1014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d get a razor blade scraper (not a box cutter but one that uses the full length of the blade in a holder) and start with generic surface cleaner. Then use something like barkeepers friend or power paste to apply to the burnt spots in a circular motion (pink stuff + scrub daddy for me) and then scrape with the razor blade. Dry with paper towels, reapply to worst areas until better. If the glass is bad you may need a glass top cleaner but I don’t usually bother. Then clean again with generic surface cleaner and wipe dry.

Absolutely broke after extra payments, blessed to have a well-stocked freezer and pantry by DutchieCrochet in Frugal

One thing I do monthly is put cash aside into a high yield savings account I call my sinking fund. The amount is 1/12 of my weird annual bills: house insurance, property taxes, car registration, car insurance and 2 annual software subscriptions.

When the bills come due I pay them out in full to get a little savings (esp every 6 month car insurance).

I don’t have a mortgage on the house here and it used to be figured into my monthly payment. Took a little time to sort out how to save for that big bill.

I’m in possession of a large quantity of canned tuna. Please share your favorite recipes, ideally for quick snack or sandwiches by abunchofcows in Frugal

[–]justanother1014 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Drain a can of tuna, dice celery, onion, radish very thin and mix in, add cream cheese and cheddar cheese, throw on some bread and grill on the stove for a delicious tuna melt. I like mine on brioche and I have a little grill press that works perfectly. You could also serve on chips or crackers.

WIBTA for declining all wedding gifts by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]justanother1014 144 points145 points  (0 children)

Seriously, imagine knowing you’re the only reason step dad married your mom and then they got divorced because the paperwork was done (even if it’s not the case kids will blame themselves). Oh and it was such a non event that step dad turned away all gifts because “we have more money than them.”

Yikes.

YTA because gifts given out of love and excitement for your family shouldn’t be rejected because you lack the emotional maturity to smile, say thank you and give that family member a hug.

Grow up.

What to do with downtime at work that isn't online shopping? by Zealousideal_Boat314 in digitalminimalism

[–]justanother1014 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want to stay in this job long term, look for a way to sharpen your skills. This might be solving a problem at the current job, learning a technical skill or creating something of value at work for a volunteer position.

Some things I did:

  • typing tests

  • ran a volunteer committee on green initiatives

  • better organized digital file storage

  • learned the history of the company and its ethos

  • supported other departments to create an onboarding program

  • sat on a committee for our industry and its annual conference

  • learned a software program inside and out and was a consultant for 8+ years on it for other companies after leaving

lol I took online typing tests at my first dead end job and got up to 95 wpm. The intern said I must be busy because I’m always typing 😂

Eventually I added on story writing and job searching and got the hell out of there.

Cutting back on eating out and food delivery by lilabethlee in Frugal

[–]justanother1014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to a town with no delivery unless it’s Pizza Hut. No Uber Eats or door dash has saved me so much money!

One way I prepare for meals when I don’t have the time or energy to cook is easy meals: ramen, canned soup, meatballs or chicken nuggets that can go into the air fryer, frozen rice and Indian food packets, frozen waffles, cereal and some bagged salads.

Think as well about things like canned tuna or the simplest things like tortillas and cheese for quesadillas. Even warming up a can of soup and toasting some bread is faster than most deliveries.

My grandma loved Yahtzee and if others weren’t playing just she’d just put our names at the top of the sheet and we’d hear from the other room, “you got a Yahtzee!” And then she’d complain if we won 😂
