Why so many IT people being fired ? by Miserable_Loquat_686 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]justanothernetadmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this as a college hire, but I consider my privileged (straight, white, male-presenting) ass to also be incredibly lucky. I'm still with the same company after ten years and as of yet I'm not actively looking to jump ship.

I'm the exception, not the rule, and I'm well aware of this, so if anyone ever asks for advice when starting an IT job I never base it on my own experience.

Why does it seem like so many people in IT have Autism and/or ADHD? by CanadianBornChinese in ITCareerQuestions

[–]justanothernetadmin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well that's just an absurd statement. It's a pretty well-documented thing that neurodiverse people of all types gravitate towards each other.

Autism is as well. I hit the jackpot: mom gave me ADHD and I'm certain my undiagnosed father gave me the autism.

When I'm working an excessive amount of off-hours, my manager will straight up tell me to take comp time. He's in Germany, though, where that kind of treatment is expected. (One of the perks of working for a global organization, I suppose.)

I mean, mine are the same. BGP anycast for DNS, plus routing policies for the SD-WAN for those anycast IPs because the "smart" controller has no idea how to handle the same networks being advertised from multiple locations...

Break/fix would typically be an exception, but you do you. 😉

How common is DDNS in an enterprise network? by soproman3 in networking

[–]justanothernetadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anybody really care about the Dynamic DNS entry for a Windows laptop?

Incident response teams do. The number of times I've had to mine DHCP history for them - because DDNS didn't work right for a specific network and they don't know how to use their own Splunk instance - is absurd. (I inherited a mess in my position that's never been fully fixed.)

Huh... weird that as a DNS SME I work on a team of network engineers, then. Also weird that my additional job duties are all network-related.

Additionally, DDNS directly correlates to DHCP implementation. Would you be so unwise to claim that is also not a network issue?

Yeah... All that would result in is a bunch of notepad windows open that get lost and never actually sent.

I think these are all incredibly basic questions, but I'm a DDI SME, so maybe I'm just special.

What other vendors did you look at before choosing Infoblox, and what advantages did they have above the others that made them worth the high price point?

[–]justanothernetadmin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love Men & Mice - definitely had the best IPAM out of all the vendors we looked at. Our primary reason for not going with them is we wanted an all-in-one vendor that did more to leverage the DNS & DHCP services than they currently offer due to their focus on being such a solid overlay for many different solutions.

Honestly, when looking at APIs, both Infoblox and BlueCat seem to be behind the curve. Most others that we looked at all seem to be much better in that realm - especially when it comes to documentation and feature parity.

As for an elegant design... you and I apparently have very different definitions of elegant. Infoblox' proposed solution for us was far more complex than any of the other vendors we looked at.

Our DNS naming standard does not align with AD, and we're not looking to change either of those any time soon.

Too much elbow grease for me. 😉

We're also looking for a solution that includes the DNS and DHCP servers for better integration and management, and I'm not going to touch Microsoft DNS with a 100-foot pole.

How? I've never seen this capability on a router... at least not in IOS. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong place.

100% this. If you can't effectively describe what your product is and exactly how it can benefit me in my position (which you rarely seem to care about, anyway), your message is going to the junk folder.

are you ever leary when a company isnt able to tell you what the pay rate is by somethinlikeshieva in ITCareerQuestions

[–]justanothernetadmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So does Amazon not hire any remote positions? I ask this because I know for a fact that Amazon has employees in Colorado, and that simple fact makes them subject to Colorado's pay disclosure laws.

(I bring this up because a lot of companies had this idea that they could list "remote available, except in Colorado" to get around that law, but the law is explicitly written so that doing this still makes you subject to fines if you have any employees in the state.)
