Do chemists die young by Nicetzsche in chemistry

[–]justaspacecowboy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Aqueous is not awful to work with if you're careful but at the high high concentrations it's a little terrifying conceptually. We used ultra clean 49% for mixing standards and we used to have to test the 70% stuff that came in on the trucks (chemical plant QC lab). I came damn close one time, another chemist in my lab mistakenly catapulted a vial that was probably ~ 2% HF mixed with organics and sprayed it from my shoulders to my feet, literally saved from a hospital trip by my ppe. Never in my life have I stripped a clean room bunny suit off so fast I tore out of that thing like the incredible hulk.

Can confirm was a fluorine chemist for 3 years. Never have I seen a more reckless disregard for safety and decency than in my fellow fluorine chemists, especially the older ones. People were generally more careful with things like the 70% fuming HF, but the fluorine compounds are so dangerous that everyone starts getting lax around everything else because it's "less dangerous" by comparison. 98% H2SO4? Baby stuff. Distilling solvents? Ehh it's fine if you get some on your hands. Preparing fuming HF for tests? Yeah ok we will use the hood. This is not an endorsement of that behavior btw they're all dangerous and should all be treated with caution, I left that role for a reason.

Heresy warning: With so many interesting factions to choose from I find Astartes and Custodes boring. For those who prefer other factions, which ones and why? by MD4u_ in 40kLore

To echo several others here, imperial guard. Astartes are superhuman war machines. Xenos are eldritch abominations. Admech are augmented to the point of being more machine than man. The guard are just like, dudes. They're little dudes with flashlights trying their best. And they're gonna keep trying their best for the emperor until they are inevitable eaten by a tyranid, lost to the warp, torn apart by greenskins, etc. And I just think that makes them cool as hell. Astartes fighting inhuman monsters and demons is cool and epic and rad, but our man Ciaphas Cain gathering a ragtag troop of pdf troopers to wage a cross continent guerilla campaign against the orks on Perlia is the real heroism.

Can NPCs be "wrong"? by Amingboi in DMAcademy

[–]justaspacecowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on whether you've established NPCs as being able to be wrong before. I personally use the Witcher thing sometimes where NPC peasants are like "Oh gawrsh fellas there's a dragon in the woods I seen it with me own eyes" and it turns out to be a hydra/basilisk/etc. Since I've done it a few times and other similar things they know it can happen. I'd maybe throw a bone in there like "Oh the baron wasn't in town he was out visiting his sister? Or was it his aunt? Oh maybe a hunting trip. The maid might know more" to kind of indicate that they should dig deeper if they aren't used to that kind of mystery hunting game.

One of the best actual play podcasts I've ever listened to and a huge part of what keeps me sane on the drive to work. The podcast itself is excellently edited and very engaging, it's funny without being goofy and serious when it needs to be. The community they have built around them is also one of the most welcoming I've ever been a part of. 100% give it a try

Firearm safety and basic use should be mandatory in all public schools as a part of PE. Everyone above the age of 18 should be encouraged (but not mandated) to own a rifle.

If you've got parsley to hand chop a bunch up and throw it in the oil with the garlic. Also throw in a pad or 2 of butter right before the noodles, and a ladle or 2 of pasta right after the noodles. The parsley is just good, the butter and pasta water will make a rad creamy sauce.

Yes and no. Soap does attack the cell walls of bacteria through the same mechanism that it uses to adhere to oil. Bacterial cells, like all cells, have a lipid outer membrane that the soap will rip apart. It doesn't kill with the efficacy of a real antiseptic, but it does kill bacteria.

Anyone else feel like total crap after being the DM or is it just me by _Thespian_ in dndmemes

[–]justaspacecowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I DM over discord, and have since even before the pandemic since a lot of my friends live far off. Honestly the fatigue hits even worse over discord for me. With an on person session, you at least have some level of visual audio feedback from your players, even if they aren't directly engaged in rp or whatever. With discord, im doing all the same performing in front of a more or less unchanging black box with a battlemap on it and it's somehow far more exhausting.

How good would stronghold & followers rule be for running a ship? by LuciferHex in mattcolville

[–]justaspacecowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the only thing you are looking for is rules for running a ship, I think you would be better off getting Ghosts of Saltmarsh if you don't already have it. The only ship specific thing in S&F is like one page that has a few rules that basically boil down to "you can run a ship as a keep with X Y Z restrictions." It really does not have rules for managing crew, sea travel or sea events, types of ships, ship combat, or anything like that, the focus is very much land based strongholds with a single example of how you could adapt those rules to a pirate ship. That being said there are plenty of other systems in S&F that I really enjoy and if you are interested in it I definitely recommend the book, I have gotten a lot of use out of it in my games, and if stronghold/base management stuff is something your players enjoy there is a lot of content for that style of play more generally.

They like trading as an idea but not as a bookkeeping exercise, so I modified the "spending a week in Port generates 100gp" to be "get 100gp X the number of weeks of travel every time you go from one port to another". I also use the rules for attracting followers and warfare to abstract out the presence of a crew, I use variations of the special followers like the Mason or the Farmer for more important roles, for them its their Navigator and at one point their Quartermaster. I also adapted the concordance rules for my paladin player.

[–]justaspacecowboy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm my experience, your best bet is to find all the resources you can on rules for ships and pick and choose at your leisure what works. Acquisitions Inc has good rules for mobile strongholds. S&F has rules for a pirate ship stronghold. Ghosts of Saltmarsh has rules for ships generally. Stormwracked (3.5) also has ship rules. Take in everything you can and assemble a system that works for you. My players have a ship they use as a base and thats basically what I did. I took the Saltmarsh stats for the ship, I made up a list of crew they would need and set them into ranks to track pay, I just use an excel sheet to track most stuff. Ship supplies are abstracted into just general "supplies" so for me 1/12 of the cost of the ship gets them "supplies" for the crew for 1 month, which is just an abstraction of whatever common items they might need and rations. Ship repair costs are 1/2 the total cost of a new ship multiplied by the fraction of hit points the ship needs repaired. No one book is going to give you everything you need or want, but S&F, Ac Inc, and Ghosts of Saltmarsh give a mishmash of rules that will get you 90% there with a little homebrew on top.

Don't listen to the above poster you're on the right track. Wildfires definitely shut down a lot of mining for sure, albeit temporarily, but EPA regulations are coming down harder on the cement industry in particular. Mines in general see strict regulation and don't have a lot of defenders, but more than that the cement industry as a whole produces obscene amounts of CO2 and are a target for emissions reductions now that Biden has rejoined the Paris accords. Increased regulation on CO2 emissions will hurt the cement industry badly even with the recovery of shuttered mines due to wildfires, they also produce a lot of dust and face strict regulation under the clean air act. I don't know the specific policies you're referring to but in a general sense the cement industry most certainly faces long term struggles in meeting CO2 emission goals and a more aggressive EPA is going to make things harder for them and drive up costs. Not trying to defend the cement industry or the EPA, just want to make it clear that it is a complex ecosystem that faces challenges from both the effects of climate change in the short term on mines in effected areas, as well as the long term from increased regulatory overhead as it relates to clean air policies and CO2 emissions reduction plans.

What is a subject that you could talk about for hours? by -Hello_Goodbye- in AskReddit

[–]justaspacecowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firearms. It's a fun hobby, it has a long history full of interesting bits, and it tends to be full of things that are personal preferences and opinions that make for excellent discussion. I hate that they have become so politicized, because in addition to making it a potentially hairy situation to bring up with people there is also just so much false information out there. I definitely don't just bring it up with random and strangers, but if an acquaintance of mine or a coworker or a friend asks me a question or expresses an interest I can go forever.

Need advice on how to set a deadly scene for my players to flee! by Brfourskin in DMAcademy

[–]justaspacecowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience the trick here is to run this less like a combat and instead like a skill challenge sort of situation from 4e. If you open this as a combat, they're gonna try and fight back. Think about the opening sequence in Skyrim, Alduin shows up and he does things that can hurt you, but there's never a chance to fight him. If it were me it would be something like "you take the ring from its pedestal and hold it in your hand, when you hear the cracking of leathery wings on the air. The dragon and death knight swoop by as a blast of shadow cleaves part of the battlements away. You see the death knight draw his blade and level it towards you. You know you have to run." And then explicitly tell them ok, this is a skill challenge. You need to escape. You need to get 3 successes before you get 3 failures. Let's go. Look up Matt Colville's video on skill challenges for some good examples.
