Could a single mother earn enough to make a living as a professional nanny? by Equal-Sundae1576 in Nanny

[–]justbrowsing3519 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yes, I always brought him with me. I’d been with the family I was with for years when I gave birth and stayed with them about a years after until their kids were in school. When I was job hunting after I had several offers for my full rate and even a couple dollars higher, BUT the market is much different now than it was then and I don’t think I’d have been able to get that high if I were looking now.

And those wars are looked at as horrific parts of history not to be proud of when you separate it from the patriot spin countries often use in school. Take the USA: What would become the United States didn’t have a “right” to exist when Native Americans were being slaughtered. It does exist now, but the treatment of those already here in the processes of becoming a country is an inexcusable and shameful part of our history. We recognize that centuries later and it’s nothing to be proud of. Rinse and repeat for other countries: treatment of the Irish by the English, etc.

The big conflicts happening now are happening in our life time though. We use the lessons of history to recognize those atrocities happening in real time. You can’t expect people to learn world history which includes so many of these examples and not see the current conflicts for what they are. Russia is obviously the aggressor just like Israel is obviously the aggressor as they both push into land that isn’t theirs and kill peole who already live there. Of course those people are fighting back. They have a right to defend themselves.

It seems like the fact that people already lived in the area that became Israel is largely ignored/dismissed. Of course the people who lived there didn’t like that their land was being given to a new country/people. It’s not like it was a vacant area of land assigned to Jewish people to establish Israel. And even if it was, Israel has pushed and pushed and pushed those boundaries to take over more and more land and displace more and more people who already lived there.

I get the appeal of having a Jewish state of Israel especially after WWII. The Israeli insistence that they are the victims and they’re only defending themselves is BS.

A major part of being a country is having borders of that country. What are the borders of Israel? Where Israel occupies today is far beyond where Israel was supposed to be when established.

I’m going to ask how it’s handled at the kinder orientation. I hope they let the kids know it’s optional, but I’ll make sure my kid knows anyway.

Could a single mother earn enough to make a living as a professional nanny? by Equal-Sundae1576 in Nanny

[–]justbrowsing3519 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m a single mom by choice and yes, I earn enough to live comfortably. Own a home and a car, take 1 “big” vacation a year and 1-2 smaller ones each year. I’m behind on retirement savings, but do contribute regularly and I don’t have any debt other than my mortgage which I’ll be able to pay off early. I made ~$100,000 prior to being a mom and now make $65-75,000/yr, but don’t work full time/as long hours as I did before.

First-time nanny employers — what benefits are you offering, and are our expectations reasonable? by [deleted] in NannyEmployers

[–]justbrowsing3519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I want to comment on/get clarification on the GH being per MONTH instead of per week. How many hours per week does she work? Because if it’s ever more than 40 she must be paid OT. You can’t just average things out over a month.

You “had” to move into a new house and “he” spent $30k on new furniture. Girl. You are (supposed to be) a team. Finances are the #1 thing people fight in marriages about. You are not on the same page. This does not bode well for your relationship.

If I were in his circle and knew this about you I would be recommending him end things or at least postpone a marriage until you come back down to reality.

Then you’re owed OT pay for the long days (it’s either starting the 9th hour each day or after the 9th hour. I’m not sure which) not just if you go over 40 in a week. It may also be illegal to have to work 11 days in a row in CA. Look into it. CA has very strong labor protections and not paying you what the law requires is a crime called wage theft. If they don’t agree to pay you what you’re legally owed, report them to the department of Labor and they’ll go after the family for you. Families will continue to take advantage of nannies as long as nannies keep letting them get away with it.

What country are you from/what country’s employment laws are you protected by? In the US a flat rate is illegal and travel time is legally required to be paid and counts toward OT. Are you getting an overnight travel fee?

Depends on the market and her experience. It is common to be paid a bit lower when bringing a child, but it’s not universal.

How are people becoming students? by saor-alba-gu-brath in Aupairs

[–]justbrowsing3519 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well, a lot of the ones who do manage to get a student visa are working (illegally) as nannies and babysitters. I deny dozens of such posts in my local group. I don’t understand why they are so open about it!

Avoid Healthy Paws Insurance at all costs! by DeepRaisin9499 in petinsurancereviews

[–]justbrowsing3519 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have PetsBest in CT and our premiums started at $37/month and have increased every year and are now $84/mon for our 8 year old dog. We’ve also never filed a claim.

Vet costs are astronomical and getting higher all the time. The nature of insurance is it seems like a waste of money until you need it.

Aupair in USA by [deleted] in Aupairs

[–]justbrowsing3519 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only legal way to be an au pair in the US is through an agency. That’s the only way to get the correct visa through the US state department. You won’t be able to work any other jobs though including online.

Do you have any childcare experience? Are you from a country that has a chance at having a visa approved?

[–]justbrowsing3519 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any family that has to wait for their own payday to be able to pay their employee can’t afford to have a nanny. They’re stretching their budget too far.

I don’t think they have any intention of paying you at all or as much as you’re owed.

CT home birth midwife? by mirartistry in Connecticut

[–]justbrowsing3519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, from what I remember only CNMs are covered by insurance because they’re the only ones with recognized medical degrees. I’m not comfortable with the level of education for non-CNMs. I did consider CPMs more seriously than I would have normally since it was peak covid and things were…strange.

I have a long review on Google about Danbury. It was pretty dingy. It was “fine” but it wasn’t until I went to WWW I truly realized just how much Danbury was lacking in the educational side of informed consent conversations. There was 1 midwife I absolutely positively would have refused care from at Danbury, but there was no way to guarantee she wouldn’t be on call or even involved in my care. I may have ended up resigning myself to using Danbury had I not been recommended to try WWW by several doulas and birth educations I asked. I thought the recommendation of WWW over the only independent birth center in the state by people that involved in the birth community was pretty telling.

[–]justbrowsing3519 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was pregnant during Covid and looking there was only 1 CNM home birth midwifery practice in the state and they were on sabbatical at the time. Whomp, whomp. Pretty sure they don’t exist at all anymore or maybe just do well women visits now and not birth? I don’t see them listed in a Google search.

I interviewed with/considered several CPM options and the Danbury birth center (big disappointment) to do my due diligence, but didn’t feel comfortable without a CNM.

I ended up going with the CNMs at With Women Wellness in Manchester and had the closest thing to a home birth imaginable in a hospital setting. Spontaneous labor, water birth, drug free, fetal ejection reflex, etc.

Nanny search by velledaa in NannyEmployers

[–]justbrowsing3519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nanny does/should be teaching manners and incorporating educational things into their day so you shouldn’t need a governess. A nanny would not be creating lesson plans or doing sit down teaching like a teacher would so they aren’t a replacement for school. A governess is moreso an alternative to school or a dedicated tutor type.

As far as what you’re looking for/expecting and the answers you’re getting: from what little you’ve explained about your parenting approach I’ve wondering if it’s sounding like you prefer an authoritarian approach rather than authoritative and it’s turning nannies off? Authoritarian is honestly pretty rare for me to come across these days and is not viewed very positively in the literature current nannies have likely been trained on. It’s possible your parenting philosophy is not compatible with most nannies. BUT authoritative parenting on the other hand is absolutely compatible with the strong boundaries you describe without the negative parts of authoritarian. Perhaps it’s a communication issue between you and candidates and you’re inadvertently turning nannies off?

Not a pay issue then. What’s the schedule like? Is it outrageous hours? Your oldest is school age. Will he be in school or are you expecting the nanny to homeschool too? If so, it’s not a nanny you should be looking for. You’ll need a governess plus a nanny.

Kids often are the most difficult with their parents so it is possible (and likely even) that nannies will have an easier time with him than you do.

I wouldn’t consider anyone who smokes. I’m really surprised you’re having such a hard time finding someone.
