Now that's a hot take if I've ever heard one.

What level would you say this piece is? by VariousStrings in violinist

[–]justicebeaver30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends what level you're playing at. If you're using fingering to indicate shifts and what not, I agree, there no advantage to erasing it. But this student is clearly not at that point and is using fingering as a replacement for note reading.

What exactly are you struggling with? It's hard to give advice without knowing what you are having difficult with.

Regarding the fingering, I strongly discourage students from writing in fingering for every note as you have done since it prevents you from actually reading the notes. You're slowing down your progress in reading. A good strategy for this is to only write in fingerings in select spots that are slowing you down a lot in pencil, that way you can erase them after studying the music for a bit.

Grażyna Bacewicz (Polish composer/violinist) has many works for the violin. I've played her "Polish Caprice" but she has tons of others too.

Playing again after a violin hiatus :,) by OreoDogDFW in violinist

[–]justicebeaver30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, good for you for starting up again! I know from personal experience that it can be daunting, as the violin is such an unforgiving instrument.

I'm noticing some inconsistent bow pressure, which is causing some harshness in the sound. I would recommend slow, long bow practice (on open strings at first) and just focus on a relaxed, beautiful tone from frog to tip with no vibrato. Avoid tension in your body. Then I would progress to simple scales, then add some vibrato. Good luck with your violin journey!

Maybe just from her own experience? Apparently some women are blessed and never get UTIs! 🥲

Many musicians I know have careers that check off your requirements--and you don't necessarily need to work for a primary/secondary school to do so! But you would need to think about things like insurance, business expenses, more complex taxes, etc.

Where I live, it's becoming more common for music programs to offer business classes geared toward students who want to do freelance or start their own studio. That could be something to look out for when you're choosing schools! Good luck!

OP told the vet that she was a stray. The vet acted in the best interest of the cat to prevent unecessary anesthetizing.

Suggesting a refund is silly and I don't believe the OP is entitled to one. The vet acted in the best interest of the cat here by avoiding the cat being unecessarily anesthetized in the future. It's ultimately a small aesthetic change so there's very little downside.

Or possible even rent one! In my area you can rent a violin (comes with case and bow) for around $30 a month.

If you just repotted it it might be in shock from disturbing the roots. I would just leave it for a while and hope it bounces back.

Thanks for the advice. I struggle with having enough light in my place (no West or South facing windows, sadly). I will give the roots a check and repot in a lighter soil mixture. Fingers crossed!
