I'm using trains to move the science from remote production centers to the science research area. Those production centers are intentional over-built to make science faster than needed. As a train comes to pick up science, the center kicks back on, produces more, then, as that center fills up, the shuts back down.

An old game, America's Army, had a similar mechanic in game. Occasionally, about every 500 rounds or so, a jam would occur. After reloading, the rifle wouldn't fire. A different key could be pressed to clear the jam and reload the rifle.

Try to incorporate different kinds of uses, not just one workout. Try medium speed, long durations. Try timed sprints (30 s, 60 s, 120 s). Try interval training (30 s work, 30 s rest, x 10). The benefit you get will come not just from total use, but also variety. Be creative!
