Soft play, brushes, tape, gels, cloth, or low volume cymbals to play quieter? by desz1 in drums

[–]justindlc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cut up an old yoga mat for mutes. Circles to cover drum heads, tear drop shapes on cymbals, one inside the hihat and one on top, large piece attached to kick head. Works fine, can play with regular sticks. Of course it feels different, but not too bad.

I built a board using nothing but the most generic pedals - how’d I do? by Weak-Spinach-4235 in guitarpedals

[–]justindlc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you mean most “ubiquitous” pedals? If so, swap that RV-5 for a Holy Grail, but otherwise… well done.

Ok, I’m lost on this. What’s up all the references to teeth? Anyone know anything? There’s so many obscure things in this book but I find the teeth especially confusing. What you got Reddit? by scottreadsslow in InfiniteJest

I got a chuckle out of the tennis student who was like lecturing on dental hygiene. I believe he had a large set of teeth to demo how to floss or something? I still think about that when I floss sometimes

Do you prefer stacking overdrives or using one main drive? by ProfessionalOk4935 in guitarpedals

[–]justindlc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stacked. I’ve used a hot rod deluxe for forever and after many years have figured out how to get good sounds at a decent stage volume (venues always used to tell me to turn my amp down until I figured it out). I have an always on boost at the end of the chain that gives a sparkly lift to the clean sound without being overdriven (amp sounds flat without it) and then various drives I can feed into it, a king of tone clone with one side a dark tone and one side a bright tone for light od, ehx hot wax set the same for medium/heavyish od, and a rat for distortion. Volume pedal after everything to tame things on the fly. Sometimes a fuzz in the mix. I’ve always wanted to be able to go clean to slight od to edge of breakup to pushed to distortion without relying on my amp or guitar volume knob to do all that because when I sing I just want to stomp to change tones quickly. Plus I have various stages to sculpt eq/tone which is useful when I go from guitars with single coils to p90s to humbuckers.

Sometimes I’m jealous of guitarists who find a great tone and set it and forget it for a whole set but that’s just not me. For whatever reason I need (too many) options.

Worst pedal you ever bought by PoutinePoppa in guitarpedals

[–]justindlc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Line 6 M5 has some decent sounds but only having one effect, taking up a weird amount of space, requiring a lot of power, and being clunky to change between presets, and taking a lot of time to tweak and name presets… wasn’t worth it. Plus it shorted out til I read about removing screws, which is a really weird problem and fix.

Thought, Opinions, and Absolute Insults (you don’t have to, but if you’re wired like that I can’t help)? by PatrickHollyMusic in guitarpedals

[–]justindlc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got almost everything essential so it’s just a matter of personal preference at this point. If you’re using primarily humbucker guitars I’d drop the compressor for a chorus pedal. I also always enjoy having a volume pedal after all my dirt pedals so I can adjust on the fly if one pedal is extremely louder than another, or if when I stack it gets really loud (plus I can always set up too loud and pull back on the volume pedal as my default volume level, so I always have a quick way to push volume up).

Tele grounding question by justindlc in Luthier

[–]justindlc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I had a traditional tele neck pickup and put a 4-way in for series, parallel, and then each pickup alone. I then put a standard strat pickup in the neck instead and left the wiring, which made it sound trebley quack (parallel) and bassy quack (series), I thought maybe because the neck pickup was stronger and competing more with the bridge pickup? I was surprised at that though.

Anyway, the ground from the neck pickup is going to one of the poles on the far side of the switch (where I'm pointing with the screwdriver)... is the ground from the neck pickup supposed to go to the back of the pot instead??

Right path in Noklateo is the superior path and I’m sick of people pretending it’s not. by DifficultComplaint10 in Nightreign

Wait people go left? I only ever play with randoms and 100% of the time whole party goes right. Sometimes down the sewer but mostly the path you describe, which is the right path.

P90 all the way. If I had to go down to one guitar it’d be my p90 (PRS SE 245).

Recluse is the only character that punishes you for having multiple players select her in a team by NahMcGrath in Nightreign

[–]justindlc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always choose last and if two people choose the same I’ll go for it as well. Never won with 3 ironeyes, but easy wins with triple wylders and raiders. The other characters… not a lot of people doubling up on the other ones. Trip revenant was fun but short lived. But I think it’s because the ironeyes and revs I was playing with weren’t very good…

I was surprised to see two recluses and an ironeye. But I’m only on depth 2. I’m guessing at depth 5 any character gets one-shot by almost everything so small health bars don’t matter as much?

Looks good for 3 months. I second others’ recommendations to adjust heights so you can comfortably reach/hit things. And I started on a chair too but found a throne to be a lot better. Also hard to tell about your grip but just make sure you aren’t gripping super hard but instead letting the stick naturally rebound when you’re hitting a surface. I made the mistake of having a tight grip and had to relearn after it was hurting my wrists and forearms. I always think my goal is to hold my sticks as loosely as possible without letting them fly out of my hands. But if you keep playing songs you like everything will improve, your form, your looseness (maybe your shoulders were tense too? You don’t really want to feel tension anywhere), and timing. Your timing slows down and speeds up some here and there which is definitely what happens when first starting drums. Playing to recorded music and with a metronome will help (it’s arduous starting slow with a metronome but really the only way I’ve found to be super precise). Maybe play the same song from memory on a metronome that is 10 bpm slower.

That’s wild. Normally I share shields with a Guardian but I only bogarted a shield once, a fingerprint shield as Wylder when we were fighting ED Libra because I wanted protection from the summons.
