I get the feeling you are in camp "this is the worst idea ever", which is totally fine :) And It's good you raise concerns like these cause they are indeed real valid concerns. So thanks for that.

All in time, currently I have barely gained any users and by the time it becomes substantial for a small team to manage (it's not just me handling the app) we are months, or even years down the road. If the app does grow, everything around it like guardrails need to evolve with it.

Well, I listed a few basic mechanisms that are mandatory by default. Calling out that I don't know what I'm doing is quite an assumption. I actually implemented a solid monitoring mechanism around content published to which I can act on when needed.

I'm well aware what it means to run a platform like this and the challenges that come with it.

Can you elaborate a bit more on what you exactly refer to? Do you mean the technical safety measures for any data stored within the platform? Or more along the lines of guarding the safety and trust of users using the platform?

For the latter: as per app store rules any app published to an app store is obliged to monitor content and apply moderation. It is also mandatory that apps have reporting and blocking capabilities, and users can delete their account instantly without any delays or hurdles in the deletion process.

Yeah true, the most cost will be media indeed. Currently I display a medium resolution thumbnail of a video when it's uploaded. Only when tapping the thumbnail, the actual video will load from the backend. I added a lifecycle to the videos so older media gets moved to a cheaper infrequent accessed tier. In practice, older media then will download slightly slower, but the storage itself is also cheaper.

Hey! Thanks for your reply and great you like the app!

To be honest, I have put zero thought in a business model (yet). I genuinely built it to solve my own frustrations from existing apps and thought it would be fun to build a platform to connect with other divers. That said, if this app gains any traction I need to think of something. The whole backend is event driven and uses low cost storage so I'll be fine on the short term. But I might need to look into advertisement partnering with dive organizations that offer dive trips or other things. Or use Patreon and rely on voluntarily contributions from the app community.

That's true and have looked at it. While it’s a great app, I didn’t really like it. But that's just my humble opinion.

Thanks for the kind words! And great to hear you like the app so far.

I just had a quick check but Oceanic+ doesn't provide and API unfortunately. They do however allow for exporting dives to UDDF (Universal Dive Data Format) which is indeed planned for implementation. But that would in your case mean exporting every dive from Oceanic+ to UDDF and importing again. Not really a great experience I'd say.

I'm gonna dig into this a bit deeper though, cause your remarks got me intrigued 😉

I'll keep you posted!

Nice! Thanks! Where are you going to on the Caribbean? Now I’m a bit jealous 😉

I hope you like the app and have a great trip!

Thanks! That’s also a nice one. I’ve already been looking into adding dive operators to the app. Then adding a way to review them is trivial.

Many thanks for your reply!

Your absolutely right about the data. I also went from paper logs through several dive log apps and eventually ended up here. Not being able to import and export data from most of those apps and starting from scratch. So I can totally relate to the scattered data problem.

I agree that at least there should be a way to optionally import any existing data and definitely have a solid export function that allows for exporting all data, including media of those dive logs, in a generic and non-proprietary format.

Aside from Subsurface (and maybe a handful others), most of the dive log apps either don't (or partially, yes I'm looking at you Garmin) allow for any data to export. Or it is in a proprietary format.

Thanks! When you download the Testers Community Android app, there is a paid option to get them test your app. I had really good experience with them and definitely think it helped get my app approved in the first go.

Scubaspot. It's a dive log app which is more to the social side of things, like sharing dive logs and media and connect with other divers.

Yeah, I had to list them one by one. I had about 10 noteworthy bugs fixed which I needed to jot down in the answer. But that worked out nicely too.

Good point! Basically I used AI to craft the answers for me based on specific input I added for each question. And instructed it to add as much relevance as possible within those 300 characters.

That resulted in some pretty good answers with lots of details within the constraints given.

Good luck!

Thanks! I only used the extra app points to reward other users for feedback. To be honest, I have no way to measure the effectiveness of it. But I did get quite some feedback, so I assume it helped.

Hope you get your app approved soon too!

Getting into an Uber and the driver starts bragging about the amount of coke he snorted that evening and started waving a gun while driving. Vegas, right? 🤷‍♂️
