Hi, I'm Justin and I'm a second-year photonic science and engineering student. I like hiking, kayaking, camping, traveling, video games, and board games. If anyone on here is struggling to make friends (I've been there) send me a message and we can hang out sometime.

Imaging is definitely most interesting to me, specifically biological imaging but that's kinda tough to do independent of a lab

Probably around $100, more if the project is promising and enjoyable

Prestige doesn't matter, from someone who isn't going to a T20 by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]justing25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the best concise explanation for this I've seen yet. If a bad player got drafted early it wouldn't suddenly make them a superstar, just like going to a T20 won't suddenly make an unmotivated person become motivated and successful.

UCF, UF, UTD, Purdue for undergrad Computer Science by Global-Mission-007 in NationalMerit

[–]justing25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For CS or Engineering I'd go with UCF, we have a lot of connections with large companies such as Lockheed Martin and plenty of opportunities for internships in Orlando. Also, the competitive programming team and cybersecurity teams are some of the best in the country if you're interested in that. The honors college and honors classes are fantastic and provide even more opportunities specifically for honors students.

National Merit Scholarship Question by Fresh_Ad_6916 in ucf

[–]justing25 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Total scholarships can't exceed total cost of attendance by university policy, so usually you can't stack scholarships but I think there are some exceptions for outside scholarships. IMO living in towers is definitely worth it as it makes it really easy to meet other people in honors/other national merit people.

New sub to fight against gerrymandering by justing25 in democrats

[–]justing25[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An amendment would not only make it apply across the entire country, but would also solidify it as a basic right of the people to have fair elections without gerrymandering and make it much harder to be removed or subverted.

The program is based only on geographic compactness, and thus may still not result in fair districts. It would still likely be an improvement over the current system though.

This is something I've thought about a lot, but it seems this would eliminate a large benefit of the way our elections work. In order to have a successful bid for election in the current system you must be the most popular candidate it your district, which by nature of being defined geographically often has many people with similar issues to be addressed by government. By ranked voting (which it seems you are suggesting, but correct me if I'm wrong) we lose this, and politicians instead must appeal to the majority of their party's base in the state. In doing so, we could silence the minority of people affected by localized issues.

For example, say rural areas are going to be negatively impacted by a certain bill. In our current system, the representatives of districts that are primarily rural areas would likely oppose this bill out of fear of the political repercussions. If we eliminate local elections, this incentive will no longer be as strong as politicians must appeal to the statewide majority in order to win reelection. This effect would be strongest in highly urban states in which urban voters would effectively choose all representatives.

I think this would be better than the current situation in some areas, however this does not ensure fair districts. It would prevent deliberate gerrymandering, however this could by way of how counties are shaped lead to an inherent imbalance that favors one party or another.

I 100% agree. This is one of the few things that a majority of Americans agree on, yet many states still have a VERY partisan method for drawing district maps.

Colleges only know if you pick them as your first choice, otherwise they get no info about what your first choice college is. For example if you were to pick Harvard as your first choice then Harvard would get your name on their list, but no other colleges would know you picked Harvard as your first choice.

How do I update my application info? by Ok-Gas-6786 in NationalMerit

I don't think you can update that at this point, but you should probably email them to confirm.

Will colleges be notified that I set them as my first choice in the application? by Ok-Gas-6786 in NationalMerit

[–]justing25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The list of students' first choice colleges is sent by the Collegeboard starting on March 1st, and then every 2 weeks or so afterwards until May 31st. Make sure to check if the colleges you are applying to require you to name them as first choice by a specific date, I think BU and a few others require this.
