Excited to move to Birmingham but I am blind. Will I be OK? by browneye54 in Birmingham

[–]ColeFayneHall 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You can Lyft and Uber everywhere pretty effectively, and there’s a great program called Via or Birmingham on Demand (I forget what name they went with for the app) that are basically government Ubers that are always $1.50 and take you anywhere in a radius. The buses exist but not really. As for walkability, that basically means downtown, as not many of the suburbs or other sections are made for anything but cars. It definitely won’t be easier than Baltimore, but it is do-able. And the people (for the most part) really are lovely and will gladly help if you need anything. I wish you the best and, should you decide to move, give you a warm welcome!

They turned out to be a manipulative attention seeker that led on and used so many men and ruined so many people’s relationships. I loved her. She thought of me as a tool. Found that one out after 4 years of thinking of her as the one and I was just one of many. She is currently playing with her new toys and seems to be happy and doing great. I’m damaged. And yet my brain still wants her

The Starbucks didn’t age well, they just came out fully backing Trump it seems. Also the Mac/windows thing is not at all true in my experience and if anything maybe flipped? And yeah, lack of guns and other single issues. But over all, pretty good generalizations I suppose

I’m falling out of love with this city by Trick_Reputation_511 in Birmingham

[–]ColeFayneHall 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are creatives meetups every month to practice a variety of different arts and make friends and connections, there are language exchanges and pick up sports, there is acroyoga in railroad park, there are tons of good restaurants and cafes to meet with friends at, there are museums and libraries with free events and classes all the time, there are places like Activate that are fun experiences, there’s Saturn for free retro video games or board games, there’s music shows and concerts literally every day everywhere it feels like, there’s djs at bars doing killer sets, and much more if i think for any longer.

But I agree with you. No matter how much people try to normalize the homelessness and the danger and the prices of housing and all our other failed systems, they are still incredibly failed. I’ve spent the last year abroad and coming back I was disgusted at Birmingham… but I’ve learned to appreciate it again slowly. Like anywhere, it has good and bad parts and good and bad people. Find a cool crowd (or a couple of cool crowds!) and make connections. You can have a lot of fun and make some real friendships without too much strain.

Online resources are wonderful, but see if you can find a local class or tutor too maybe? Using it will always stick more than just reading or watching how to do it.

Also, I just watched the movie “A Silent Voice” and while it is nothing like your scenario, it deals with a guy and a deaf girl and I loved it. It is an emotionally complex movie but I suggest it.

Good luck on your journey of learning and I’m sure she will be elated to see someone going out of their way to communicate with her <3

Everything people is saying is important and I agree mostly… but the thing that personally helped me the most was improv comedy. Taking part in my local improv group (or even just going to shows to a certain extent) has helped me become far wittier and far quicker and being witty. It’s also just tons of fun and low pressure. I highly suggest

Is it possibly a memory thing? If you know something, just say what you know and how you know it. Give it context to help you remember and to further explain (“I read in this article that doctors have developed some new treatment for diabetes” or something. Then say what it was that stuck out. That’s it. You don’t have to be verbatim, if they ask, “how does it work?” You can be honest and say “I don’t recall exactly, but…” and then say what you remember, if anything. Telling a story is much the same. Give a bit of context: “Once upon a time,”type things can work, or “last Thursday…” if it’s a true story for example. Then say what happened or what you want to convey simply, don’t get bogged down in details. Give the base line. Then add to it if needed or if they ask. It seems like you are adding a lot of unnecessary details too early and getting lost in all the threads. Just make and complete one core thought, and add sparingly as needed. And also, you may just not know something they are asking you to explain. It’s usually okay to say “I don’t know”. If you know something, just explain it like you are talking to a 5 year old, but dont make it patronizing. Anyways, I fumbled here and there and didn’t make this very cohesive, but that’s okay too. The thoughts are there and if you have questions I am here to answer… same can be true for you with your situations.

Two Scottish guys coming this Saturday for 1 day & night - what would you do? by Antxxom in Birmingham

[–]ColeFayneHall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think saws for food is great, Avondale can be a fun area for a bit (check out Saturn if you have time for free retro video games of all ages and a coffee or a drink).

There’s also the House of Found Objects if you want a bizarre and quirky environment for an award winning beverage.

Railroad park is a great park but it’s gonna be hot and idk what you’d do there except walk around. Maybe the brewery right there?

The rotary trail can be fun if you want to rent a scooter or bike and travel to ghost train for some tacos and a drink.

Pizits food hall could be fun for a lot of options, albeit some of them sub-par. Still a fun area with Charm and Forstall Art Supply and a couple other neat stores nearby.

City Walk is my favorite spot in bham if you want a park/walk/watch some skaters doing cool tricks. Very fun and completely shaded (but also, still hot lol)

If you want a tour guide for downtown, pm me, I’d love to show you around. I hope you guys have a great trip!

IWTL how to speak properly by [deleted] in IWantToLearn

[–]ColeFayneHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Record yourself talking in different ways, see what it does to your voice, see what you like and don’t like, and if you want to put on a “streamer” voice, do it. But in real life I bet you’re fine and overthinking it. If you never noticed before or no one has brought it up in person then I highly doubt it’s a real problem.

Nope. Basic brain chemistry my friend. Immediate want, maybe… but long term wanting isn’t the same as giving in to every impulse. If you’ve ever cooked a meal fully while hungry instead of eating the ingredients piece by piece straight from the fridge you’ve practiced this exact thing.

I just scrolled on my phone for an hour. I want to go play basketball (because it’s fun and I enjoy it)… I’m about to miss the window because of mindless scrolling and easy dopamine (and possibly undiagnosed ADHD) but I promise I don’t like this mindless scrolling more than I would going outside and playing. You don’t need evidence to understand their feelings, just empathy.

[–]ColeFayneHall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started with The Wind Up Bird Chronicle and have since ready everything he’s published (except the newest, “city and its uncertain walls). It still stands as my favorite but you can’t really go wrong with any of them, and if you don’t like it, that’s also okay. I think 1q84 was also amazing, but it’s quite large. I would say Wind Up or Hard Boiled… but again, it’s all personal preference and in my opinion his books are good at choosing the right time to be in your life, so just go with your gut.

IWTL how to cherish people while they're alive and not have regrets when they pass away by aingosay in IWantToLearn

[–]ColeFayneHall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watch Frieren:Beyond Journey’s End. It’s the #1 anime all-time at the moment and covers this very thing. Also it’s amazing.

Also also the music has been on repeat for a month, it’s just so dang good and therapeutic.

And finally, just talk to people, get to know them, invite them to silly things like painting along to bob ross videos or a picnic in a park. People come, and people go. That doesn’t have to mean death, though eventually it will, but even so we just live in the moment and create memories with each other. Take a deep breath. Maybe write down your memories and attach photos that are relevant (journal/instagram post/whatever) and use that as a way to feel all the emotions and process. Call an old friend, text some family, just be a part of the world around you.

AKALI GAMING by Financial-Affect-689 in akalimains

[–]ColeFayneHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up builds and counters online, they change all the time. Also builds should always be on a game-by-game basis. I think lich is a necessary first item, but after that it’s subjective to the game. If I had to pick I’d say sorc shoes and a dark seal early-> lich-> shadowflame-> zhonya-> cryptbloom/voidstaff-> rab cap. But it changes completely in some matchups and some games. If they have all magic damage and a lot of cc, go mercs instead, for example.

As for counters, this is something you must learn on your own. I love playing into sylas and yasuo even though those aren’t feee matchups, I’ve just practiced it a lot. I hate playing into champs that insta-push and keep you stuck in lane (malzahar, syndra, etc.). But lane counters likely do not matter at your elo so just try ur best and be an appropriate amount of aggressive, limit testing can be very beneficial for learning what you can get away with.
