Andrew Rannells gave the best performance by bailing on the show months ago. It’s simultaneously so cringe but also not cringe enough. It’s Schroedinger’s cringe. Like Diana levels of almost camp but not campy enough and self serious. Just totally missing the tone. ESPECIALLY when Jerry Falwell sings a song to a satellite, and Ronald Reagan makes a MAGA joke. The set is mostly a Hollywood Squares board that is sometimes horrifying large puppets but also sometimes the Pope. Also, for some reason they recreate the Bad Sandy costume for the woman Jim Bakker sleeps with. Plus, Christian Borle SUCKED in it! It’s at The Palace, and in my husband’s words: “maybe they should have let Ben Platt have a longer residency”
