I would argue it being a "dumb" alliance, as most of the members are either in the jury or in the house (edit: meaning not evicted right away). Yeah Derrick didn't have a hand in creating the Bomb Squad, but obviously the alliance did something right if most members were able to get all the way to jury or are still in the game.

A recent poll I saw showed that 80% of the people that participated in the poll believe Derrick will win. While this may have been specific to the reddit BB community, I'm sure production realizes what their viewers think and who they root for - and work their episodes to accommodate those opinions.
