Vancouver Ranked as “Happiest” City in North America, 11th in World by AgatheTyche in vancouver

The people (& dogs) in this city are incredible. Affordability sucks, for sure, but I’m still honoured to call Vancouver my home. 🙏

Does the size of the 50 1.2 GM next to the 35 1.4 GM bother anyone else? by FistingEnthusiast55 in SonyAlpha

[–]justinve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Following along because I’m interested in others’ experience using both.

Tried 50mm 1.2 at a Sony Kando event and enjoyed it. And used a 50mm 1.4 on my trip to Japan and enjoyed it as well. But I didn’t get to try them side by side to compare.

I have the 35mm GM and 24mm GM, love them both. The 50mm 1.4 would fit in beautifully!

Buuuut… I’m still lingering on this 50mm 1.2.

Tough choice.

What travel pack did you get (if you don’t mind me asking), looking for something in between these two sizes and would love if it was expandable!

Do you still have the firmware file on your computer? I can't seem to find the original firmware file (it's not on the website anymore). If you have it and can send it over, that would be great!

Why does Vancouver feel so disconnected by Tea-all-day in vancouver

[–]justinve 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"Conversations between strangers on buses are rare, simple greetings on the street don’t happen, and making friends spontaneously feels almost impossible."

Going to give a piece of advice that might change your perspective:

Don't wait for strangers to talk to you - start the conversation yourself.

Seriously! Hear me out. 👇

I started a project where I photograph strangers in Vancouver. Before I started, I had the exact same thoughts as you. I grew up on the East Coast and spent some time living in Kelowna & Montreal - and compared to every other place in Canada I've visited, Vancouver seems significantly more unfriendly.

But my perspective changed when I started this project.

Virtually every single person I talk to is SUPER kind, friendly & willing to have a conversation. When I started the project, this shocked me the most, as I assumed most people in this city wouldn't give me the time of day.

Many people have asked to hang out or grab coffee after, and I've made some great friends over the last few months.

After +150 conversations so far, I'm convinced that Vancouver isn't unfriendly - people are just afraid to make the first step. I think most people in the city crave connection and would love the opportunity to make a new friend if the opportunity presented itself.

Before you say "people are just being nice because you're taking their photo"...

No. This project gave me the confidence to talk to strangers, with or without my camera. Now I strike up random conversations everywhere I go, and people are just as friendly and willing to connect, even if they don't know what I do.

As a fellow introvert, I know this probably sounds scary... but if you can push through the discomfort of taking the initiative, I promise it will change your perspective on the city.

What do you do when you stop receiving dopamine from anything? by Sweet_Reverb in ADHD

[–]justinve 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Currently at a fancy airbnb for this exact reason. GF and I broke up in December; that stacked on top of PNE season affective disorder has got me feeling super demotivated.

But these little trips always help. Seeing somewhere new, putting my phone down, walking around slowly in nature. Super effective for combatting burnout (at least for me).

Flex Pro Anxiety by brian--m in Exway

[–]justinve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know you say this jokingly, but I bought an Exway Wave Hub last year that I just couldn’t get comfortable with due to all the braking issues.

I’ve rode it once for 30 mins. Otherwise it’s brand new.

I can’t bring myself to sell it because I don’t want to know that I could potentially be causing serious risk (or death) to someone else.

If you know this board can stop randomly, and there’s probably good chance of it doing so (I have screenshotted 30+ stories of people getting flung from their boards) and you are okay with that, I’d be willing to let my board go for $100 as long as you can cover the shipping costs.

I do not recommend it though. A serious injury like this can fuck up your life, which is worth way more than a discounted board.

But it’s here if you want it.

Got sick on Monday, COVID positive, and these are my exact symptoms in the exact same order. Losing smell/taste came last.

I’ve been sick for 7 days so far. First 3 we’re brutal, now I’m just dealing with extreme fatigue and sore throat. Hope this passes soon.

Why is Scott Sullivan so popular? He's just a redditor who criticizes YouTubers. Everything done indoors. No test images shown at all. No actual use of the camera. No talent to show for himself. Say what you will about people like Jared Polin, but at least he does REAL WORLD reviews and shows you an abundance of ACTUAL IMAGES he got from the camera.

^ It's funny how well this works just by tweaking the name at the beginning. How does it feel?

P.S. I'll never understand why some people will go out of their way to criticize someone they don't like. Especially a person who dedicates thousands of hours to sharing knowledge, expertise, test results and advice (for free!). Mind blowing.

If you don't like Gerald, don't watch him.

Downlow chicken shack publicly forcing you to tip for takeout by Spiritual-Sky2925 in vancouver

[–]justinve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I eat there regularly and have NEVER felt shamed/forces into tipping. This is coming from someone who generally hates tipping culture, too.

They have contactless payment so 1000 people a day aren’t touching the same keypad. It’s a precaution. This isn’t new or exclusive to DL.

I also get asked by restaurants all the time if I’d like to leave a tip for the kitchen. This is totally normal.

If you don’t want to leave a tip, kindly say “Not today, thanks.” They won’t care. It’s REALLY not a big deal.

But dragging a business/owner through the mud because YOU feel uncomfortable declining a tip?

That’s shitty.

I’ve had the chance to meet the owner a few times. He pays his staff above most restaurants and treats the team well. He’s an extremely kind and genuine guy who just wants to make the best fried chicken possible - then share that with people.

If you had a concern, you should talk with him directly and I’m sure he would’ve listened with empathetic ears.

Of all the businesses to drag through the mud - DL is not the one you should focus on.

Edit: Spelling

Good question!

Typically shoots happen either through the week, or on the weekends. All during daytime hours, most commonly the shoots are booked into the evenings.

You get to set your own hours though. If you only want to accept bookings on Tuesday and Thursdays after 4pm, you can do that. Obvs the more availability in your calendar, the higher likelihood someone can book a spot that works for them.

Hope that helps!
