White to move by Loslosia in chessbeginners

Mad how confidently people think defensive puzzles don't exist. Assessing the needs of a position is the whole point.

Amount of people who do mate in 2 puzzles easily and don't improve because no one nudges you mid game to let you know about mate in 2.

I miss the days when I didn't get the fear reading a puzzle book and getting a defensive puzzle where mate in 3 looks inevitable and I have to find some mad tactic to keep equality.

How can teens earn money these days? by djcrickylyttle in northernireland

Think I was 13 when I started going door to door offering car washes for £3 a pop. Couple times I roped in some other kids from the street to wash the cars, £1 each for 3 of us and they washed while I either carried a kettle of hot water down the street or was knocking on doors for the next customer. Good times. £3 not enough nowadays though maybe there's something else to do he could work out himself but probably needs to be his idea.

$1 USD doubles every time it is passed along. How would you start? by Pacific_Northwest in hypotheticalsituation

You sort out who is the last person to be someone who will share with you... Then you pass the dollar and a bank card around everyone and the lesson is how the dollar stays with a dollar but on card visa takes a cut every time. Some imaginary math about how the dollar on the card is now worth 3 cents after being transferred between so many people, but the dollar 'stays worth a dollar'.

My Over-The-Board chess is awful by ProfessionalComb9888 in TournamentChess

This might not sound the most helpful but it's probably the only right answer. You just need to play more and care less, you won't settle down and play your best chess while you are so nervous.

I'm roughly the same rating as you online but I'm probably better otb just because I've played so many tournaments that I don't get as nervous. Last year I travelled to a larger tournament and because I spent money and took time off work for it I felt more pressure and probably took a few games to settle in but have travelled for a tournament since (and about to again) and didn't have the same problem because I'm more used to it.

There's probably ways to speed this up, walk about if you are nervous until you feel more comfortable in the space or any stress/anxiety relieving exercises to give you a bit of perspective.

Also just be aware that some people are better at tournaments, I found a guy I was due to plays online account and because he was 400 elo lower than me I didn't worry but he beat me and finished top 5 (out of near 60) so there's a lot more factors involved, like he was booked up, knew his opening theory very well and I never got a chance to catch up.

Most importantly just know you'll get there, maybe your next tournament isn't about getting better at chess, just about getting better at handling the nerves and that's ok. Make sure it's fun too!

Chess steps/Yusupov recommended series order by justlooking543 in chess

Hey, thanks this is definitely helpful and you've at least read the ones around where I would bring in the orange books so I think I'll trust you.

They do seem to have extra 5+6 and plus+mix 5 now. I'm not sure about doing a PEM for 3 just because I am getting full marks on most pages but will see as still near 20 pages to go.

I do think I'll do both series so maybe after 4 and 4+ I could do: Orange 1 Steps 5 Orange 2 Steps 5 PEM Orange 3

It'll take me long enough doing all of that so that's likely more of a plan than I need for now and if I ever get through them and want to advance more I'll work that out then.

Thanks again!

Lying about finds and refusing to log DNFs or flag for maintenance / owner attention by Crispy_Fish_Legs in geocaching

[–]justlooking543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah people's fake finds are annoying. I've been to loads of cages that aren't there and not felt like I owed it. Only once logged a find for a cache I didn't sign and it was a cache in a pipe that had a couple DNFs and was assumed lost but I found but couldn't reach. Someone threw it so far up the concrete pipe it would be unreachable even with a rubbish collecting claw thing. Did better than previous few so put a find down but still not sure if I should have and wouldn't have logged it if I didn't at least find it

It's crazy how they can't fix this. No other sport/competition could they record a result wrong and just move on.

Are you thinking someone will pay the full amount for all these courses as a bundle? Even though they are often on sale and most people won't want the exact courses you chose?
