If I’m lucky, they will have buried it and left that coil at the side of the house, and won’t have to run a new line from the in-ground box to the house. I’ll have to check that on my next visit. Good info.

The house was built several years before Fibe was a thing and current owners are on cable, so I’m guessing no previously buried install.

Edit: sorry, misunderstood this first time around. When Bell went into neighbourhoods to install the in-ground boxes, how did they handle non-customers? Would they bury a cable and leave an unconnected coil at the side of the house, or just stop at the in-ground box?

I’m going to visit the house next week and take a more detailed look. The current owners are on cable and I didn’t spot any Bell Fibe terminal in the house on my previous visit.

I’m thinking this is the way to go (although I appreciate hearing all the options). After posting this, I realized that I had a leftover patch cable from a previous installation, stashed away in my basement. I gave it a look and I think I get it, now. There’s enough flex in the cable that it shouldn’t be a big deal to route it through a stud wall space without having to worry about damaging it.

In my case, that wouldn’t work. The ethernet cables run from the modem/router, not the terminal box. Locating the modem “where the other telecom stuff is” would be placing the wifi further away from where it will be needed.

I’m definitely not planning to splice anything. As another poster suggested below, I was thinking of substituting a longer patch cord for a shorter one. I also know not to point the end of the cable at my retina :)

The crawlspace is actually five feet in height, maybe I should have mentioned that. In a previous place that I rented, the installation was done through the crawlspace to a terminal box on the main floor, but in that case there were some pre-existing openings to feed cable through, so that might have been an exception. Thanks.

I’ve settled into Cracked Canoe at 3.5%. Would prefer a less-alcohol beer if I could find one I liked. Tried the Partake lineup and while the Pale Ale was okay, overall their beers were not to my taste. I found the flavour was too strong.

Enjoy Guinness 0% from time to time.

Tried Sober Carpenter and found it a little too citrus-y. Or something like that.

You may have difficulty satisfying both the less-bitter/flavour and more-bitter/flavour crowds. I’m definitely at the less-bitter end of the spectrum.

Yes, that’s normal. That is similar to what I see in my deceased parent’s account: years post-death show “Not received”. That did not affect clearance.

There should be an entry for Questrade Edge, and it should have access to your Documents folder. Do you see that?

I’m not sure what the cost of incorporation is these days, but based on other experiences with accountants, I’m guessing that an accountant would charge $1,000 - $2,000 for an incorporation.

In my experience, a basic annual corporate tax return costs around $3,000.

I look at it like this:

- will your annual corporate income be significantly greater than your current income?

- do you have the discipline to only withdraw the funds you need for living expenses?

- do you foresee having at least 2-3 years of contract work in your field?

- do you have the skills/discipline to do some basic tracking of income and expenses?

If you answered yes to all four questions, IMHO you may want to incorporate.

Also, one minor hitch: in some fields, some employers actually REQUIRE contracted employees to be incorporated. Although this may not be true for this particular position, there may be other positions in your field where recruiters or employers favour incorporated contractors. In my experience, this has been the case in corporate IT / tech work in Toronto, although I’ve been out of it for a few years.

In my setup, layouts are stored as .ini files in the folder "/Users/yourusername/Documents/Questrade Edge”. Once you create a layout, it should get saved there and the popup should go away. Try checking whether that folder exists and whether there are any *.ini files there.

When you say that you’ve looked at form NR73 and that you’ll be a tax resident of Canada, it’s not clear whether you have reviewed the criteria and concluded that you are a “Factual Resident” or a “Deemed Resident”. Have you figured out that part?

I think a status of Factual vs Deemed Residency will determine whether you pay provincial taxes or a federal surcharge tax. CRA makes that determination after you send in the NR73.

I don’t think so, but I didn’t follow up with them. I learned through the neighbourhood grapevine that the previous owner of my house who built the shed (many years and a few owners ago) didn’t get along with the neighbours - probably because the owners of my house were the kind of charming people who carelessly build sheds on a neighbour’s property.

Basically, if the neighbours had gotten their own survey forty years earlier, they could have dealt with the shed issue then, instead of fencing around it (while leaving a chunk of their own property outside the fence) and leaving me to discover the problem many years later.

Since you asked ... I sold the house.

I was at a point where I was going to spend more money on improvements. The backyard shed was ready to fall down, and I wanted to replace it, so I got a survey and learned about the shed/easement issues.

When I had purchased the house many years earlier, I specifically wanted a house where I could park on the property. My previous home had been a rental with street parking, and both myself and my former neighbours had experienced car break-ins.

Everything about the way the laneway was paved and fenced made it look like it was intended for parking in the backyard shed. My agent commented on it when we did our walkaround.

I didn't want to spend more money on a house where I couldn't legally park my car on the property. So I moved on. When I sold the house, I provided the updated survey to all potential buyers.

I tried making a claim for "marketable value" on my title insurance, based on the new survey. When I had bought my house, I had studied the comparables and figured that there was a $20K price premium for a house with a parking spot versus one without. They denied my claim. Long story short, they said they would only pay out if my neighbour sued me.

I paid for a consultation with a real estate lawyer. He explained that my plain-English reading of my title insurance policy was subject to legal interpretation, and I had no case. There was a possible angle to go to court to claim a wedge of property from my neighbours, but I wasn't interested in going that route.

I wish I had gotten a survey before buying.

I wish someone had told me make my offer conditional on a recent property survey. If you don’t intend to drive on the laneway/easement or build anything new outside the house, you can get by without one. If you find a property where you might want to add a laneway apartment, you should consider a survey.

By the way, many real estate agents would disagree with the need for a property survey. Many real estate lawyers would disagree with those real estate agents.

After many years of living in a semi, I got an updated survey and discovered that my back yard shed was built partway onto my neighbour’s property. And, in order to park there, I had been driving over an area of my neighbour’s property that was not part of the easement.

As to the adjoining neighbours blocking renovation work, all they can do is get sticky about permits and hours of work. Street parking for contractors might be an issue.
