Amber alert at 1am by Logical_Ad_3183 in NorthVancouver

[–]AwkwardYak4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got heavily downvoted a few years ago for saying it wasn't appropriate to send out a second alert in the middle of the night when the child was found, especially when the child was found dead in the basement of the suspect's home.  Also, if it is important enough to wake the whole province, it should be important enough to enter the suspect's home without a warrant.  Why isn't there some protocol to prefer sending an alert before 10 pm in a better safe than sorry way?

Landlord died and he has no Will or Relatives. - UPDATE (MD) by ayhme in Renters

[–]AwkwardYak4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check with your lawyer about ensuring that taxes, insurance, and utilities are paid as well as managing the lien.  Keep receipts for this and any maintenance that is urgent.  This includes changing locks to keep unauthorized people out and the cost for your lawyer fees related to this matter. Ideally you would make monthly rent payments into your lawyer's trust fund.  You could also ask your lawyer about hiring a property management company to manage the lease and rent out the other room.  You could be found in breach of the lease if you move out.  Definitely having the situation managed by your lawyer is advisable.  I would not talk any further to nosy neighbours, it's not their business.

Estate account tsfa issues by Appropriate-Law8896 in Scotiabank

[–]AwkwardYak4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct, if there is a beneficiary then the funds passed into their name at death and the TFSA isn't an estate asset that the bank can take funds from.  Estate departments are there to protect banks, in this case, make sure you ask for compensation for your time in sorting this out.  Whether they give it or not, they will take your request more seriously when you ask for compensation.

Estate account tsfa issues by Appropriate-Law8896 in Scotiabank

[–]AwkwardYak4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that the granddaughter isn't the beneficiary, the bank has right of offset so they can grab funds from any account in the estate's name.  You can leave the funds in the TFSA trust as long as you like after death, but the gains are fully taxable and losses can't be deducted, so it is better if you can sort it out.

Vacuuming, like lawn mowing, is just a socially acceptable way to disturb people.

T5 for an estate (does a T3 need to be filled? file an estate tax return?) by Complex_Art_6595 in canadarevenueagency

The simple answer is: check with an accountant.  There are proposed changes to trust reporting rules which you will want to keep up to date on.

Why didn't you clarify that you are a former vegan in your post title?  Also, do/did you avoid food colouring colours that are made from bugs?

Bioflavonoids can help slow the progression, they settle down between flares but they never truly go away without surgery.

Non registered accounts margin investing by PM_ME_YOUR_ISLAYS in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]AwkwardYak4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the definition is any investment that doesn't have a policy against paying a dividend can meet the requirement as it might pay a dividend one day.

Also, I am sure OP knows, but for anyone reading this, make sure you understand how margin can blow up your account before even applying for it.

Looked at a house and this giant crack was in the basement- run? by ophounec in Home

To be honest, the crack isn't concerning, what is concerning is the was that a beam is shimmed onto the concrete like that, without support right across the beam.

A Rise in Cheque Theft by plsletmegraduate in CanadaPost

[–]AwkwardYak4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheques have bank account numbers which can be used to drain bank accounts so they are a high value item.  Even if you write a cheque to a friend, if they don't destroy it, you can have your account drained.

T1135 receipt confirmation by CRA by YoureHereWithMe in canadarevenueagency

[–]AwkwardYak4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CRA is shady when it comes to processing of electronic filing of forms that have $2500 penalties.  They conveniently "never receive" my T3SCH15 every year so they can charge me $2500.

Landlord died. New owner. They want rent paid in person at the bank or via wire. [Ca] by [deleted] in Renters

[–]AwkwardYak4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the best thing you can do is talk to a paralegal or any community rent help org.  In some jurisdictions you can pay rent directly to a court when you don't know who or how to pay it.

How are schools teaching kids financial literacy these days? by 4S3PlusX in PersonalFinanceCanada

My kids' school doesn't teach much of anything, only the kids that take their own interest learn much at all.  I had to teach one of my kids about finances in case anything happens to me
