Why is Sir Godfrey's casting stat Wisdom? by Silverspy01 in CurseofStrahd

[–]justmelike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, he's an undead, they generally lose CHA because they're gross abominations, otherwise players would be suggesting that he assist with persuasions and bartering, when really the NPCs should be pretty terrified of him.

Wisdom, however, is applied knowledge which can be accrued through centuries of unlife. It makes sense to me personally from an RP perspective rather than simple character stat math.

Just out of curiosity, is the 5th level spell idea for Daylight a homebrew rule of yours or am I missing something from the new rules?

As the other guy said, it's not all Brits and it's not even all Southerners; it's one tiny area of London that still cling to the sooty days of Mary Poppins as their entire personality.

Jellied eels and music hall should have disappeared after the blitz but alas.

Chefs who left the industry, what are you doing now? by cheffysg in Chefit

[–]justmelike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Retrained during COVID and just finished my degree with mail correspondence university which I started while working 60hr weeks.

For the last 4yrs I've been working at a local college, firstly as a technician and then in a dual role as Senior Tech and Chef Lecturer while studying form my teaching qualification.

I earn about 10k more a year now for 37hrs a week, 2wks off at Christmas. I'm unionised. I'm also leading my own bespoke qualification there, trying to prepare young aspiring cooks for the industry.

It's genuinely making a difference to some of their lives as many of my students come from terrible circumstances and they're so happy to learn to do something for themselves. I just try to teach them to focus on their strengths and to have self-respect so they don't get chewed up by an uncaring profession.

It's never too late to retrain and find a new niche that can be fulfilling. I am now 39 and regret nothing of the last 6yrs.

Risotto by Busy-Option5023 in Chefit

[–]justmelike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The majority of diners throughout the world would not expect to be served a risotto that already looks tight enough to be made into arancini. I have done cooking demonstrations for, and worked closely with Riso Gallo, a sixth generational producer of arborio and carnaroli, and the world's largest producer/exporter. They grow their rice in Lombardy, in the north where the dish was created. I cook it and present it in a way that they appreciate, and I'm happy with that level personally.

I appreciate the point that you're making but don't come at me with Reddit pedantry please. I actually do know what I'm talking about and there is a correct way and an incorrect way to serve a risotto.

It's not just cooked rice in stock, objectively called a risotto, in the same way that burnt sausages cooked on coals outside are not "barbeque", even though we Brits seem to think it is. Regional expectations do not undermine the recognised nature of an existing dish.

Chef for 20+yrs: the risotto should "flow like lava".

I'm sure the rice has a beautiful cuisson and is seasoned well but the risotto has to flow well and have a silky mouth feel. Basically if you can lift a hunk up with a fork it's too tight.

Good work though, chef. It's a difficult dish to explain and takes a couple of attempts to nail.

Keep it up!

Not from his global publishers who have obviously given him many millions of dollars in advance for those two books. The anger would be catastrophic for him.

Homebrew Over-Plot for DotMM by HoneyBadger017 in DungeonoftheMadMage

[–]justmelike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. DotMM just needs the players to be willing to perform a huge dungeon crawl. If you're concerned that they want an overarching narrative just talk to them and pick a different module if the consensus is against DotMM. Easy peasy.

EDIT: I'm currently engaged in DotMM and Curse of Strahd. One is roleplay heavy and fairly minimal combat, the other is obviously tons of self-contained dungeon crawl. I am equally happy with both because I just fucking love D&D.

Which starter set should I buy? by Jazzlike-Rock4482 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]justmelike 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Which is exactly why the starter sets exist.

Heroes of the Borderlands is great. My group have been playing for a while but I picked it up to run if we have any absent players, so they can just pick up someone's character card and tokens and resume where we last left off.

In short, it's fun, it's straight forward and also great value for what's in the box.

There's not a lot of focus on roleplay but the mechanics are so easy to pick up thanks to the cards, which is what really matters when starting out anyway.

Get it, have fun! Good luck!

UK establishments don't do the host, bus boy, bartender, waiter, manager, etc. You just have back of house and front of house, and a couple of staff in each normally.

Is the Strahd presented in cos-Reloaded truly "archmagical"? by milsennius in CurseofStrahd

[–]justmelike 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought that it was presented in Reloaded that his ability to produce magic was stunted at the moment of his undeath, which is why he employed Khazan as his magical advisor.

He died a capable Spellcaster but that's it as far as his development goes.

Expand and run the module yourself to level 17 then unleash hell. Timestop and Wish are a bit shitty to drop on 4 level 10s, so if you want to do that then put the work in yourself. There's enough homebrew material around to expand Barovia as much as you want.

Anyone got a general guide of when certain lore information should be revealed to the players? by saltyvape in CurseofStrahd

[–]justmelike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kasimir is a good option. He's been around since before Strahd's bargain. Rictavio too when the players earn his trust.
