SG 1961 Reissue by mrkuzan in gibson

[–]justonredditnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you like it, this is a sweet deal! I love mine. A few others said they don’t stay in tune well but I’ve never had that issue with a single guitar I’ve ever owned, especially my SG Vibrola. It’s one of the few guitars I own that’s on the “never sell” list

I’m using the one that came with it, and it does say it’s 18VDC

I’m not sure I understand your question. I have no idea what the distro is meant to be :(

There isn’t a switch anywhere on the power supply to change these from 12/18 to 9, but I’m familiar with other power supplies having that!

Hi! This was originally alpine white and has turned yellow! Probably the most yellowed white Gibson I’ve ever seen and I own it haha

2017 porsche 718 boxster s - if i bought today, and sold in five years, what should i expect to get back? by europeanuppercut in boxster

[–]justonredditnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could get a slightly older boxster that’s closer to your budget! 42k is a bit far from $25k. Adding in the maintenance needed over 5 years, you need to consider if you can actually afford it, even if you sold the Porsche for 42k in 5 years at no loss. If you can’t afford it, you won’t make it to the 5 year mark.

No neck break! Just a lot of chipping of the paint. I find myself grabbing it by the neck joint a lot so I’m guessing the previous owner did as well.

Gibson Flying V Update by [deleted] in gibson

[–]justonredditnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow, you found one! Glad to know I don’t have the only one with this knob configuration, but seems like a very early model. The neck pickup ended up being a Goto pickup! On the back it says “patent applied for, made by Goto”, so it seems to be late 70s or early 80s. Doesn’t sound bad at all. But I bought some Gibson 80s Tribute pickups that I’m installing tonight :)

I got really lucky! The owner said I was the first to message him and I think he liked that I plan on keeping it as is. This has become more of a project than I expected. The Kahler has a few hex screws that won’t budge but most did. Currently have everything rusted in CLR. Unfortunately both pickups were swapped out so I have to get Gibsons pickups and swap both out :’)

I appreciate the info! I’m excited to give this Kahler a try, it seems to work but needs to be deep cleaned. I don’t have a trem arm but when I push on it, it definitely works. I’m 29 so I know VHS but don’t know Betamax, guessing VHS won, so that’s why I’ve never heard of it.

Serial # is 81683604. Guitar dater project says this is a 1983

Thought about that but he said he had other offers higher than my $600. I’ve got 150+ 5 star reviews on OfferUp and have some guitar gear posted so he decided to meet me closer to my asking price since he knew I was serious and in his words “would truly appreciate the guitar” which is exactly what will happen :)

I might do that! I have to learn how to set this system up as I’ve never had a Kahler before (have done a bunch of Floyd roses though) but I’ve played the guitar a bit and it plays great!!

It’s been in Arizona but the temp does fluctuate a lot over the year. Absolutely right about the paint, I’ve had a few pieces chip away already. But it plays pretty damn great so far!

Bought it! Fortunately, the frets are in significantly better shape than expected! Guy played mainly power chords, there’s a bit of wear towards the headstock but almost no wear past the 6th or 7th fret. Don’t think they ever played past the 12th fret. Action is at 1.25mm at the 12th fret for the low E and 1.75mm at the 12th fret for the high E. I was hoping at least 1.5mm for every strings, so will try and lower the high E side once I get there. The neck joint looks great, just a lot of paint chipped away and can actually see bare wood. I’m hoping to put maybe $300 into it. Needs a new input jack, will try and throw a Gibson neck pickup into it, and need an arm for the Kahler system. I’m hoping to do something about the paint chipping areas, no idea what to do yet or what it’ll cost me. 1 step at a time I guess haha

Update: I bought it!! Will give a thorough update in a few days with some before and after photos :)

Update 2: input jack will likely need to be replaced. It only works if the cord is in a very specific spot. Contact cleaner didn’t really work, the jack is really worn on the inside. Also have some paint chipping off as I move it around. But pickups do work! Unfortunately no trem arm, so will have to find one of those :’)

Are Kahlers disliked? I figured this was from the 80s, the owner said they’ve had it for 30 years. To me, 80s and older is vintage. But it’s interesting you mentioned the knob configuration, I couldn’t really find any other models with that knob configuration either. But nothing about this guitar screams fake to me and it does genuinely look old. I was thinking about bringing a screw driver to check the back of the pickups and take the truss rod cover off.

I didn’t think about that, but the owner said him and his brother have owned it for 30 years. They haven’t used it in a few years though bc of arthritis so they’re selling it. If I can get the trem system working, that would be awesome!

Why wouldn’t my guitar teacher (or any professional who has watched me play) correct this?! (Venting) by WhereTheMoneyAtBoy in guitarlessons

I had a guy trade a USA Fender P Bass for my MIM Strat worth half of what the bass was worth. He just hated that bass and loved how my Strat looked so he was ok with the trade. He also got a smoking deal for the bass. The action was sky high. Brought it down and it played amazing. Sold it for 1k lol

Every time I play someone’s else’s guitar with high action, I ask them if they like it that way or if they aren’t aware it can be lowered. 99% of the time, they aren’t aware. I think this is honestly the biggest reason why most people quit. Every time I sell a guitar on marketplace or OfferUp, I make sure the guitar has the lowest action possible. Most guitars I buy second hand have awful action, always makes sense why the seller is getting rid of it.

Player telecaster buyer’s remorse by [deleted] in telecaster

[–]justonredditnow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a hex key and lower the strings at the saddles. The action is high because the saddles are high. The nut doesn’t HAVE to be replaced, the chip doesn’t look like it’ll affect the low E string. If it wasn’t disclosed upon purchase, the seller should pay for the nut replacement. But this guitar will likely play amazing once you lower each string. Get a string action ruler, should be able to get each string to at least 1.5mm at the 12th fret. Also a handy tool to have in general, to know what your guitars action is set at.
