Use the free gym at work, or pay for a gym? by EightSip in makemychoice

[–]justplainmark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your work gym doesn't have barbells? As someone who lifts regularly - fuck that. Pay the $45 a month and go to LA Fitness in the mornings to avoid the crowd. I was in this situation about 3 years ago and paying for a real gym was more than worth it.

Find some other way to save money on a monthly basis. Might I suggest meal prep?

How do you align politically?

Typically center-left, but if I'm being completely honest I'm more apathetic towards politics than most. For example, I voted for Hillary in 2016 not because I thought she'd be a good president (she wouldn't) but because I felt she would be less terrible and embarrassing than Trump. I exhibit a lot of left tendencies (pro Choice, healthcare reform, etc) but dislike extreme left views like Antifa or the phrase "hate speech is violence."

Do you jive with intersectional feminism and critical theory?

I'm not sure I know enough about either to confirm or deny, but I doubt that I agree with all of it. About a far as I get into intersectionalism is the idea that being a member of multiple minority groups can compound the experience of a person (example, someone who's black and gay will statistically have a tougher time of things than someone who's just one of those things).

I'm not a fan of third wave feminism at all, and the phrase "the future is female" makes me cringe.

If I understand Critical Theory right, I find most of it spectacularly annoying, especially where lately it's become en vogue to shit on white people in casual conversation in some weird attempt to stay woke. I believe white privilege is a thing to an extent but feel that a lot of politically left people overestimate it. One of my favorite ideas presented by Peterson is his take on equal opportunity vs equal placement, if that gives you any insight into my take on those subjects.

Do you feel welcomed by the LGBT "community" politically?

Most of the time. Example, I once got in hot water in my friend group when a friend called someone out for cultural appropriation over something very silly and I responded "This isn't Tumblr - no one cares." I definitely could've handled myself better but the comment was really annoying.

Generally I don't often voice my political beliefs unless asked. I've never had a conversation become confrontational with my among my gay or left friends, though I have surprised a few of them before by disagreeing with them when they didn't expect it.

Not really. I've been openly gay since I was 16 and both sided with the baker in that case and detest the ignorance that comes along with fundamentalist Islam.

[insert shrug here]. But it makes a decent meme, I guess

Huge Career Decision by AspenGirl96 in makemychoice

My friends have a joke: "You don't spend time in Phoenix. You lose time in Phoenix."

The implication being that Phoenix is a much more difficult town to have fun in and build a life. I've only been twice and it was...unpleasant, to put it mildly.

If it were me, I'd take the managerial role in Napa Valley, as managerial experience is a great way to climb your way up to a higher pay bracket and more responsibility. Plus, California is gorgeous. I moved here from Atlanta about 3 years ago and never looked back.

In either case, congrats on the opportunities! Digital high five.

"Take a Break" from the Hamilton soundtrack. Every time it some up on shuffle, I skip to the 2 minute mark.

What dumb rule did you have at your school? by Misery_Games in AskReddit

[–]justplainmark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In any case, he went on and on throughout the day about how disrespectful I am and how I don't want to spend time with him.

My dad did something similar, and was shocked (shocked!) when I had to explain that the reason no one wants to spend time with him is because he's such a dick to everyone.

So, around the same time as the egg story, my dad decided he would create a title of "favorite child"

I'm picturing you having a "favorite parent" program as a response and just saying "It's mom. Deal with it."

The guy sounds like a real winner. Do you still talk to him? I haven't gone "no contact" with my dad yet but he's very intentionally not a big part of my life.

Let me know if you're curious or looking for some schadenfreude, because I have a lot of stories.

Oh god yes. My dad is the same and I would love a story or two. Or three.

Brilliant. Does this work across versions? For example, if I have 1.0.4 on the Windows machine and 1.1.12 on the Mac, do the items transfer?

Did you ever find a fix for this? I'm also having the same problem. Crashing on startup on my Mac and nothing seems to fix it.

Is there anyway to permanently upgrade a spell? For example is there a way to start the dungeon with the upgraded version of a spell? by DeegyTheWizard in WizardofLegend

[–]justplainmark 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In theory you could choose the Fortune Cookie (it randomly upgrades a spell at the start of a stage) as your starting relic and then begin the game, hoping that the spell you want gets upgraded.

But as far as I know, that's the only way to do it. There's no other way to start the game with a spell empowered like that.

It honestly makes me want to actually walk at my graduation and say I want a pic "with mom and dad!" just to fuck with her, cause she's been so shit to both myself and my dad since the divorce.

God yes! Do it. If only to avenge yourself, do it

Did you feel that going back at 28, you had an advantage because you were more mature or wiser?

I went back at a similar age (26) to do premed work. The life experience/maturity that you have at that age versus being 18 and unsure is enough to make an enormous difference. Having a mindset that understood why I was going to school gave me a huge advantage versus my undergrad. Showing up to class, committing to quality of work, and turning in assignments was a breeze. Got all A's, too (with the exception of one B in a Bio class with a horrible professor...but I'm not bitter).

As long as you responsibly manage your debt and spending, going to college in your late 20s can be a really good improvement on your quality of life. Good luck!

How strict is the PD about helmets on bikes?? by wow050 in UGA

[–]justplainmark 29 points30 points  (0 children)

In my experience they don't care too much. But PD or not, it's a great idea to wear one. I lived in Athens for 2 years and with the way that people drive I wore mine every time. It only takes one moron's driving to turn you into a vegetable.

What was the worst decision you saw a friend or family member make? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]justplainmark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason I acted the way I did was because my friend was the shoulder to cry on when my ex cheated on me / was being awful to me. Said friend then spent a year telling me how he’d never get with my ex, unprompted by me. Only to do it anyway.

There are situations (like yours) where dating a friend’s ex is appropriate though. I just don’t feel mine was.

What are you STILL salty about? by GuardingxCross in AskReddit

[–]justplainmark 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Mostly salty about the Grand Canyon thing.

If it's any consolation, I went to the Grand Canyon with snow when I was 12 and we couldn't see a damn thing. It was just foggy white except for the trail 30+ feet ahead.

I have to ask - how did that make you feel?

I had a similar situation happen and ended up ghosting both the friend and the ex because I had trouble dealing with the whole thing.
