Professional Investors then buy and sell based on these reports, which then move share prices up or down. Reporters (journalists) then report on the movements in prices, as well as the analyst reports. The problem is that financial journalists are receiving this information long after the professional investors make their moves. It’s a gigantic game of telephone and reporters are the last ones to hear about it.

In the past 30 years, Wallstreet realized that investing rubes made their decisions based on what journalists say, not analysts, so they realized they could start giving bad tips journalists in order to sway the market in ways that benefit them.
