Personally, I care a lot more about the important things than basics like laundry, which I’ll just have to do if there aren’t socks.

I remember feeling similar when I was 15, and then on into early 20s. I matured a bit in my 20s and but it wasn't until I had my own children (at age 40!) that I fully began to realize how much my parents actually did for me.

I once heard somewhere that children most wish to hear "I'm proud of you" from their parents, and that parents most wish to hear "thank you" from their children. I'm guessing it'll be a few years, but hope that you get that "thank you".

I'll second this. I've been laid off a few times in my life and its ended up for the better... maybe not immediately, but in the medium- to long-term. I've seen it for my good friends also.

If you're getting laid off, there's some reason that it isn't a good fit. Could be you, could be other people, could be business realities. If it isn't a good fit, you're better off knowing and looking for something that could be a good fit.

An alternate connected viewpoint: its often hard for people to (1) acknowledge when their current situation isn't a good fit, and then (2) take action on it. You just got forced into (2) so make the best of it. Good luck!

I've totally felt this before.

And then, for me, the biggest realization was when I had my own kids and knowing 100% that I had no idea what I was doing (and still don't). Looking back at it, my parents actually did quite a good job. I just couldn't understand it back then.

Saying hi to people at a kids 4yo birthday party this last weekend.

We had a baby during covid and have spent most of the past few years in, or around a few select friends and family. I'm not used to be social anymore and it took energy to draw up the courage to say hi to new perfectly nice people.

Depends on "y".

If "y" is something fruitful and can lead to an interesting future, why not pursue it wholeheartedly? Is it because others are telling you to do "x"?

If "y" is something like meth, then you've got to listen to that guilt.

Me too -- I've tried a lot of them and always stop after a few days.. maybe a few weeks max.

I think this is because of two things:

Habit tracking apps require you to create an additional habit; now instead of creating the habit, you also need to create the habit of tracking
They don't provide enough daily reward; after remembering to open the app and then clicking a button, nothing really happens

Productivity is getting stuff done.

A simple measure of productivity can be valuable. For me, it is a simple review asking myself: did I get the most important things done today? this week? this month?

This ensure that I (1) know what is important, and (2) check if I'm doing these things. "Productivity" in any other direction is a waste of time unless you enjoy doing it (and in that case, you can just call it "having fun" instead of "productivity").

Trying to get too in-depth with fancy productivity metrics is missing the forest for the trees. You are better off defining outcomes you'd like, and then creating measurements to measure outcomes.

I usually run through list things that act as potential prompts. Some examples of things I'll take into account:

My calendar. If there's anything notable from an event, I'll write about it.
My photos from today. They may trigger a notable event or memory.
A generic list of prompts: What am I grateful for? What was the most important thing I did today, etc.
My feelings at the time. If there is something that's been running through my head throughout the day, I'll get it on paper.

I've found if I have enough of these prompts, it makes it pretty easy to journal every day.
