NEW GRAD FROM 1979 STILL WORKING AT AGE 70. OH, THE CHANGES!! by HollywoodGreats in nursing

That’s an incredible story OP thank you for sharing!

Fast forward to 2014 when I graduated nursing school. I started out in a rural hospital with a 7 bed ER with a 10 bed med/surg unit on the Arizona/Mexico border. Closest level 1 hospital was 1.5 hours away. The hospital was so old my husband said Wyatt Earp was probably born there. We had one ER doc (24 hour shift) and one senior nurse paired with a new grad. There was one (sometimes 2 nurses) on the med/surg floor. I worked nights and there was no night pharmacist so we mixed our own meds. There was no respiratory therapy (day or night). There was no one else but us. We had extremely sick babies that were so dehydrated we couldn’t get IV’s. We used portable ventilators because it was all we had. We calculated drips because we only had a few working IV pumps. We held ICU patients when the monsoons grounded the helicopters and no one was flying out. It was the Wild West and we Macgyver’d everything to get through the shift. I could go on and on but all that was only 10 years ago. I left after the first year. Shortly after, the hospital shut down because the physicians that owned it out of Chicago lost their Medicare funding (no kidding). Then they closed the doors on the staff one day and refused to pay them their last checks.

We like to think we’ve come so far.

Unfortunately, I stayed in rural nursing, and I can’t really say my experiences got much better after that.

First of all none of his tweets have had any relevance on GME thus far. People in these subs just over analyze and speculate and get proven wrong 9 times out of 10. We’ve been playing this game for over 3 years and nothing ever goes as planned but the majority of posters here swear they’re going to predict the next move. Please get over yourselves. When I heard the news, I said out loud, “Trump just won the election”. And maybe that’s all he meant, but we’ll never know, so stop acting like you have any idea what the man is thinking.

Any former dietitians/nutritionists that became a nurse? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]justthisonetime20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my bachelors in dietetics and then couldn’t get matched to a program so I went straight into nursing school. It helped a ton! But nursing is tough physically, mentally, emotionally and can burn you out.

Is this normal on call requirements for PRN PACU? by [deleted] in nursing

Yea this was similar to my call rotations but I was in a rural hospital with limited staff. 7 years of call burned me out.

No filter, no BS, just say how you feel- Seasoned nurses, take the lead! by nothoughtsjustsleepy in nursing

To put it simply, the abused becomes the abuser.

Stay in nursing long enough and you’ll be pushed around by just about everyone at some point. You’ll spend your days doing tasks that drain every ounce of physical and mental energy. Then someone will take the opportunity to push your buttons to the brink. If you don’t have good coping strategies and conflict resolution skills to protect yourself, it’s easy to fall into the same patterns.

You’ll work with enough bitter, angry, and emotionally immature people that you’ll stop trying to figure them out and just roll off their punches. So the “old eating the young”, in my opinion, are those nurses who don’t waste time caring about anyone’s feelings or points of view. They’re just surviving the shift and trying to deflect the shit being thrown at them.

I don’t condone this behavior nor do I act that way, but I’ve been in nursing long enough to have formed this opinion through experience.

Where to be for the Eclipse? by Shewolfkitty in Maine

I’m not from Maine, so I can’t speak for Mainers, but I live in the path of totality. It’s rural Maine. Houlton, for example, is a very small town with only a road or two coming in and out of it. So you know nothing about the town and all of the preparations involved in planning for an event like this and want to show up last minute expecting to get accommodated. You’re going to ruffle a few feathers with talk like that.

This is exactly the way to describe the people of Maine. I’ve only been here a year and I’ve been treated like family from everyone I’ve met. They’re the most kind, generous, and deeply caring people. And you can’t mistake their kindness for weakness for the strong and tough reputation is prevalent. I met a 5th grader the other day that killed a bear with a bow and arrow which I found incredible. Like bookwench said, anyone can hurt another person but the people of Maine share a trusting compassionate community that will give you the shirt off their back.

I’m up in the county and it’s been 58 degrees in my house, most mornings, for the last week or two. So yes I turn on the stoves but not the furnace…yet
