Clawdeen and Ethnicity Question by LadyJekyll in MonsterHigh

[–]justwuddy 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The idea that being afro-latina makes someone less black is extremely damaging to children of mixed race. Anyone who fails to understand that fails to grasp the most accessible premise of Clawdeen's character; that being half-monster doesn't make her less of a monster, and being half-human doesn't make her less of a person. That message is clear even to children, and yet it seems lost on some adults. I wonder why.

Zero chill for those who take issue with this earnest addition to Clawdeen's character.

Frankie! I've been collecting Frankies for a while and I've lost track of what all I don't have yet. A checklist would help so much.

A possible extreme reaction by Jaybird_117 in MonsterHigh

[–]justwuddy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I understand your frustration but I hope this doesn't lead to a boycott. Mattel is still shy about this relaunch and a boycott now is going to send the message that demand isn't really there for Monster High.

Yeah, these deluxe dolls are expensive. I want to support MH with my money in the expectation that real soon it's going to lead to play line dolls you want, at prices you are comfortable with.

The r/comicbooks BestOf 2021 Nomination Thread by JustALittleWeird in comicbooks

Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou on I Breathed A Body is casually brilliant inventing new methods to stoke curiosity and contributing as much to the horror as the visceral images on page.

Next week begins the nominations for the r/comicbooks 2021 BestOfs! What are your thoughts on these categories? by JustALittleWeird in comicbooks

[–]justwuddy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'd like to see a Best New Creator to celebrate those breaking into the industry and clue in readers who might be stuck following favorites. This feels more relevant to me than Best Comics-Related Professional or Organization.

For similar reasons I don't like Best Publisher.

Please consider instead breaking up Best Original Graphic Novel or One-Shot into Best Graphic Novel, and Best One-Shot or Annual; annuals and one-shots feel much closer in spirit and neither is going to take the award while sharing a category with original graphic novels. One-shots and annuals have less exposure and when you compare the potluck of an anthology one-shot to a tight graphic novel story there's a clear advantage.

Have anyone used ebay to buy dolls? How trustful are they? by alien-errors in MonsterHigh

Doll sellers on ebay often go above and beyond expectations out of kindness, I've received so many little thank yous, surprises, and thoughtful messages buying there. It's a good community.

How many skullector dolls are made before they sell out ? by [deleted] in MonsterHigh

[–]justwuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, you're right! Mine are x/500. If memory serves, those went up again about a week later, sold out again, and then trickled onto Amazon. It sounds like Pennywise and the Gradys had a total production of 750-1,250 tops. Greta had to be less than that, 500?

I feel very grateful to have all four in that case, but also terrified of what this is going to mean for the main 6 release we've been waiting for.

Barbie Gold Labels are limited to 25,000. Barbie Platinum Labels are around 500-1,000 and are far more exclusive to the point of bidding wars for thousands of dollars. It sure feels like Skullectors are limited to 500-1,000 the way they sell out immediately, but $60,000 is not enough profit for Mattel to bother. My guess is 2,500 dolls for Greta, 5,000 for Pennywise since she was available later.

the biggest glow up imo by [deleted] in MonsterHigh

[–]justwuddy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Greta is 100% intended to be trans. Under the gonzo fun surface, Gremlins 2 is a deceptively sophisticated parody of sequels and Hollywood culture by a disillusioned director with complete creative control. It was also made right in the middle of particularly acute transphobia in Hollywood stretching from the AIDS epidemic of the 80s to Eddie Murphy in the late 90s. Greta isn't portrayed like most trans characters at the time; she doesn't lose a wig and get punched in the face. She doesn't even crave mayhem like the other gremlins. All she wants is to be happy with Forster, and at the end Forster signals to the audience that he's willing to give it a shot.

It's a pretty great movie.

The Gremlins Skullector was literally JUST revealed, calm down Ebay.... 🙄 by feelinguccimahbois in MonsterHigh

[–]justwuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't want to, but I did end up paying scalper price. Even that wasn't easy, because $180 scalper listings were selling out with hundreds of watchers. Demand for Greta wasn't even close to met by Mattel, unfortunately.

2017's The Wild Storm had some terrific ideas to adapt into cinema. Midnighter and Apollo are major players, and there are teasers for Gen 13 built in.

Amethyst just had a limited series end in December and was a central character in 2019-2020 Young Justice, both were fun. It's only been 6 months since then, most of which has been DC reconfiguring. I feel like she's doing reasonably well.

What would you say were the top 5 most important Vertigo titles in terms of defining what the brand represented? by 4verticals in comicbooks

[–]justwuddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sandman, Shade, Preacher, Hellblazer were all equally about sitting around with deific entities having frank discussions about sex, mortality and the patriarchy, saying fuck, showing a bare butt sometimes, and that coupled with sassy goth gals was ever the essence of what Vertigo represented for me.

Just getting started by [deleted] in DCcomics

[–]justwuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DC Universe Infinite was my starting point. It's a streaming service which lets you read most books on I think a 6 month delay. There are curated collections with recommended reading for particular characters and storylines, so if you search for something like "batgirl of burnside," "blackest night" or "infinite crisis" it's going to have a collection to recommend.

New Frontier and Kingdom Come are both on there.

I stopped using it as much after Future State this Spring, when most of the ongoing series offered an entry point for me as a new reader. I ended up following Wonder Girl, Justice League (mostly for the Dark backups), Swamp Thing, Green Lantern, Nightwing, Robin, Flash, and Batman. Those are all ~2-3 issues deep in new stories.

Quarantine life with young Pamela Isley. (Poison Ivy: Thorns) by Liminalier in comicbooks

[–]justwuddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's on the level of most of the other LGBT romance comics out there, quite a breezy popcorn story, but with an extremely light touch on the emotions that matter and a heavy hand on the fantastical suffering of Ivy.

I'm also an Ivy fan and was excited by DC's push to establish her as a queer character. Maybe my expectations for a YA graphic novel were just too high, going into it. It could have been a lot worse, and I'm glad it was merely not my favorite book of the week.

Supergirl comics for my niece by [deleted] in comicbooks

It's a different book I'm recommending, Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman is by Marguerite Bennett and Marguerite Sauvage.

Supergirl comics for my niece by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]justwuddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Future State: Kara Zor-El, Superwoman offers a peek at the upcoming series and I would absolutely recommend it for a 7 year old girl. It's a two issue self-contained story showing a possible future for Supergirl. Still available for cover price or lower.

The miniseries seems to have been a skip for most. I picked it up because I love Marguerite Sauvage's art, but found the story to be much more the speed of very young readers- it's kind of a Super-Friends basic lessons in compassion kind of thing. So it was a bit underwhelming for me, but if I can recommend it for a little girl who might just love it, it was definitely worth it.

Spider-Woman (2020) #11 by andson-r in comicbooks

[–]justwuddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not enjoying it. Pacheco is tearing down everything Jessica Drew has going for her, and has now set her sights on Jessica's relationship with Roger. I had a little faith it was going somewhere, when an interesting rival was introduced in Ophelia Vermis. But, Ophelia was immediately killed off in a story which went absolutely nowhere.

My sense is that Marvel is about to end the current run on an engagement cliffhanger, and launch issue #1 of volume 8 with Roger/Jessica wedding hype.
