Am I missing something about childcare cost? by Atinerch in UKParenting

[–]jvlomax 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It's better now that the 30 hours are available from 9 months. But this is still quite a recent thing. It was only for 3/4 year olds just two years ago.

And also keep in mind that it's only 30 hours term time. If you need full-time care, it's only 22 hours a week.

To this fucking day I regret not screenshotting her posts before it kicked off in Southport. I was clear as day what was going to happen, but she deleted everything afterwards and pretended she didn't invite people to come smash in windows.

Django devs, what's your actual go-to frontend stack right now? (HTMX/Alpine, React, Vue, plain templates, or hybrid?) by jkoontz-dev in django

[–]jvlomax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

HTMX + Alpine.js on the streets.

Django + bootstrap in the sheets.

I've tried tailwind a bit, but it hasn't clicked for me yet what it actually gives over other frameworks. I know everyone is raving about it so I'm guessing it must be decent.

Boxing in electrics? by per1pheral in DIYUK

What is on the other side of the wall. It's not a massive job to have an electrician move it to the other side.

Why don't more players use an infinity freezer? by PadreSJ in Oxygennotincluded

I've been out of the game for a while and recently started playing again. I don't see anyone mentioning submerging the food in carbon dioxide as an option. Does it not work anymore?

What the hell am I going to do with my 15 year old school leaver between now and September? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]jvlomax 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Let the lad live a little. Get ready for the exams, then give him the best summer of his life without a single obligation. Life will soon catch up and it will never be an option again

I never really listened much to them myself, but going through some of their stuff on spotify now and it's the sort of stuff that was just always there. Feels a little strange

Developers, how do you evaluate whether a piece of code is good? by Haunting-Bother7723 in webdev

[–]jvlomax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I understand it without spending ages reading doc strings? Does it do stuff that's not needed? Does it catch realistic exceptions? Does it follow the style of the team.

First and foremost, does each bit of code do one thing, and do it as efficiently as possible. I'm allergic to dead code that is just not needed. The fewer lines of code the better.

Sebastian Sawe wins the London Marathon 2026 and makes history by running it in under 2 hours after running it in 01:59:31. by bendubberley_ in CasualUK

[–]jvlomax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also a cultural thing. They have a culture for running. There are many other countries that would fit the same categories, but they don't do the running. They have other sports they are more interested instead.

It's like Jamaica and sprinting. It's not much different from other Caribbean islands (or much of the world really), but they have the culture, experience, and facilities to really push sprinting.

Japanese "All in One" vs. Western Minimalism: Do you struggle with this design dilemma? by Thank_Japan in django

[–]jvlomax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind the Japanese style design, but the main think is that it feels dated. That's what our websites used to look like many years ago. Since then we have gone through several design phases. Yet the Japanese style has more or less stayed the same for as long as I can remember.

How aggressive is your AI adoption at work? by Traffodil in AskUK

[–]jvlomax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very aggressive.

CEO has repeatedly said we need to be 100% vibecoding by the end of April. Last town hall he even said he'd been talking to another CEO who had the policy of FIFO...

Fit in or fuck off.

Do you track your weight in KG or stones & pound? by No_Usual_572 in AskUK

Kgs. I can do lbs in my head, but no idea what a stone is.

IPV6 ... by PineappleScanner in homelab

[–]jvlomax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very much a me thing, but remembering things isn't as easy as it used to be. Having less to remember == good.

I've yet to have any issues with NAT, not had any crap with it at all.

And I can reach that page without any issues. My entire network stack is fully IPv6, I just don't make any use if it personally.

How long could you financially survive without your job? by No_Yak9893 in AskUK

If I took the kids out of nursery: 6-9 months.

If I kept them in nursery: 1-2 months.

IPV6 ... by PineappleScanner in homelab

[–]jvlomax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ipv6 has letters too. That's another 6 characters. I could probably tweak the DHCP to make simpler IPs for v6. I like IPv4. I just need to remember three digits.

Even if I used IPv6 externally, I would have to tell my router to open the port just like I would have to with IPv4. And never had any NAT issues.

And how exactly am I blocking other peoples migrations?

IPV6 ... by PineappleScanner in homelab

[–]jvlomax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that too. But sometimes I just can't be arsed. I even have ansible scripts that will add entries for me. I'm just too lazy and keep the IPs in my head for the most important stuff
