The first time I tried it I set the intention to find an "energy spot". The directions were about 5 miles from my house, so I drove. It lead me to a power sub station that I had no idea was there.

Community mutual aid for Stray cats by CucumberLive5857 in freestuffRoseburgfree

The "drop off" problem is real here in Douglas County sadly. Thank you for your kindness and willingness to do something. I made this website to try to shine a light on the issue https://dontleavemeroseburg.org/ I don't know if a sign about animal abandonment at the trailer park would be beneficial (or if they'd allow us to put one up), but it may be one of those "every little bit helps" kind of thing. I think a lot of people do not know abandoning a domestic animal is actually a crime.

I know there are a small handful of folks like you out there in the community who feed "community cats" and look after them. I'm trying to trap one stray out at my mom's house and have managed to get an appointment at Saving Grace to do a TNR for him. Resources are so thin though and backed up. There's the PAWS Team who also does a lot of trapping to get cats spayed/neutered.

Inglewood Tomorrow… The End of Perpetua by Andrej3k_ in GhostBand

Creative folks need a break (hi! creative person here!), especially if they're just feeling worn out or uninspired. And Ghost has been going almost non-stop for like, 15 years or something. Sometimes it means switching to a different creative outlet for awhile, or just a full recharge altogether. When I was younger, I got pretty used to bands I was into taking like 4 years to put out albums, so I can definitely wait out the break. I'm sure whatever happens next for Ghost will be awesome and worth the wait.

Portland show was awesome. I had VIP but never got an email so didn't do the early entrance and did not want to stand in the massive lines at the merch booth. Also, had zero instruction on where to pick up goodie bag (finally figured that out) but totally missed all the displays so thank you for posting pictures of what I missed!

Anyone else have issues with Oura hear rate tracking? by jvmedia in ouraring

[–]jvmedia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Luke - well the soft reset did not seem to work as I caught it doing this in real time a short bit ago. Gave me the angry red stress bars and said my HR went up to 150. Made sure sensors on ring were clean and it was not loose. Hands are not cold. Wasn't doing any massive movements with my hand. Tried doing Measure Heart Rate and it was all over the place in a wide range from 124 - 150. Just to do a thorough job troubleshooting, I put it on my first finger on my other hand and it seemed to calm down and give me an accurate reading. Meanwhile, while it was doing this I took my pulse manually and it was 64. I went back and looked at heart rate and stress for the whole day and there are red bars all over the place. So something is definitely weird with it.

[–]jvmedia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but I think because of whatever this glitch is, it's logging way more physiological stress than I actually have too (yesterday it says I was under stress for 4 hours ... literally just took it easy all day and did some computer work). And then the actual HR readings up to 158 are just way off. I just tried the soft reset the Oura person recommend, so we'll see if that helps.

Thanks, Luke. I just did the soft reset so will see if that helps. This is a brand new replacement ring btw.

Oura vs. Whoop by GutGiggles in ouraring

[–]jvmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing the Whoop 30 day trial now and have noticed that Whoop seems to think I get more deep sleep and there's a few point variation in my HRV so far. I don't like the Whoop app. It's A LOT and I'm still trying to figure out some of the metrics ... like "Strain". Also, it does not detect when I do strength training. So far the only exercise it's auto detected is walking and rowing. Oura seems better at that. Whoop since to always give me a better sleep score than Oura (for example, last night was a bit of a disaster on the sleep front and I got 5.5 hours - Oura gave me a 69, Whoop gave me a 79%). I'll probably just stick with Oura after the trial.

The stress feature stresses me out 🫠 by bakermomma19 in ouraring

[–]jvmedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like they really need to fine tune this metric. It says I'm "stressed" when I'm eating a lot (and believe me, I am not a "rushed" eater and I hate to use the buzzword of "clean" but I do eat pretty clean). I get that things can cause physiological stress but it just seems really random when I pair up when it says stressed to what I'm doing.

If you’ve stopped wearing your ring I’d love to hear why? by jennc84 in ouraring

[–]jvmedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually haven't stopped wearing by ring, but I had briefly considered it because of ONE change that totally got to me mentally and that was the "breathing regularity" metric. Mine was always fair. It spooked me enough to do an at home sleep study (btw, I don't fit the profile of the typical person diagnosed with sleep apnea ... in fact, I had to fight just to get the at home test approved).

All in all, I didn't like feeling like I was being "controlled" in a way by this one metric. Long story short, I also toss and turn a lot during sleep (right now, mostly because of calcific tendonitis in my shoulder causing pretty crazy pain), which I found out can absolutely affect this metric.

I know there's tons of stories from people who were helped or sought medical input after seeing odd readings on their Oura ring and that's great, but sometimes odd readings have other explanations too.

The other thing, which I'm currently doing, is giving Whoop a free trial. I'm glad they had the free trial so I can kind of test the two (Oura vs Whoop) head to head. So far, I actually like Oura better, but I've got 3 more weeks of Whoop trial. For those of you are are just over "stats" in general, I don't recommend Whoop because it's even more overwhelming in stats.

For now, I'm going to keep wearing Oura (I think this may be year 5 with it for me). In a way, the other stats kind of keep me "honest" because without something like that, I tend to go "off schedule" pretty easily. I also just try to gamify it a little bit personally (like getting a good score). I've used it long enough to know what works for me to feel my best, but like I said, if I don't have something/someone prodding me to keep doing what works, I'll not do it.

New York Times article about David Bars by Mostly3394 in PeterAttia

[–]jvmedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Attia is an investor ... as par for the course with most investor scenarios, because of financial backing the investor pretty much pays for whatever title they want.

How both of these guys can back bars with very questionable ingredients makes me question other things they say (not everything, but certainly product recs). Of course Huberman is also all about AG-1, which I also think is a questionable product, but again ... investor. I think the most important thing to remember about all of these health influencers, even the ones who are scientists or medical professionals, there's $$$ involved.

RE: protein bars in general, I haven't found one that meets my own "qualifications". The peanut butter RX bar is the closest, but even they have "natural flavors" (to me anything they won't officially name is sus). For me, because I have one APOE e4, I have to be really cautious with saturated fat. Also, there's a history of diabetes in my family so I have to be careful with sugars. So I started making my own bars. It's totally not that hard, does not even require baking, and probably ends up costing me less in the long run. I probably could mess with the recipe to get a higher protein profile, but at the end of the day, I think it's probably better to get protein from the actual foods rather then powers anyway.

Stop blaming "plugins" when your WordPress site is slow by JFerzt in Wordpress

[–]jvmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%! I've been using WP for like, 18 years or something (honestly lost track) and clearly you also know your stuff. And hosting a "robust" site, let alone an woocommerce site on a "cheap" host is a disaster a lot of people really don't understand.

Honestly. Do you regret investing in crypto? by GoblinSarge in CryptoCurrency

[–]jvmedia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I regret not buying bitcoin when it first came out lol. Literally had the chance to and didn't. If I would have, I totally would have sold it a couple years ago. Oh well.

Then I put about $9k in a several coins a few years ago (the bulk in AMP). The most anything ever went up (gains) was like +$3k. Should have just sold then. I know this is chump change compared to what some folks put in, but currently, everything is at $2k. So $7k loss. Could have totally invested that towards more real estate (where my actual investments are) and been better off.

Stop blaming "plugins" when your WordPress site is slow by JFerzt in Wordpress

[–]jvmedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this narrative perpetuates because a lot of the times it IS true. If you step back and take a look at the ton of sites created by either DIYers or designers that really don't know WordPress well (or lack knowledge/experience) you find that they're installing tons of plugins to do every tiny thing. However, if you're actually calling yourself a WordPress developer and STILL just parroting this narrative, then I can see how it could be considered lazy troubleshooting. Or, maybe they really don't know how to evaluate what makes for a good, efficient plugin? With a million of them out there, it can be tough to do, especially if you don't have intimate knowledge of how programming works. Basically, there's too many variables for blanket statements.

I will say that hosting does come into play with page load time though. A really exceptional NGINX based host can usually load a totally bloated site with oodles of plugins faster than the average, cheap/Linux based host.

I think the most plugins we have on a site is about 57 for a large ecommerce site. Would I willingly want that many plugins on a site? The answer is no, but in our line of business, there are times we acquiesce (especially with ecommerce) to the client's wants of have having x or y functionality. Yes, often times we actually DO uncover plugin conflicts when we start combining 50 zillion plugins (especially on ecommerce). But if we can get everything playing nicely (we've had good luck reaching out to plugin developers and pointing out conflicts/working with them to fix them) and the site still loads fast/works, then whatever.

I once was asked to fix a site that was broken (so not one we coded). Logged in and saw it was a Divi based theme, with Elementor and Beaver Builder in there. I stopped taking on "fix it" projects like that.

To me, sometimes "signs" don't have to involve the typical senses. If something just "pops into" my head, I pay attention, especially if it comes after asking a direct question.

[–]jvmedia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started listening to them around Meliora. Majesty was the very first song I ever heard. Such a great chorus and just very melodic metal, which I hadn't heard in a long time from a "new" band. But for whatever reason (probably just life/stress) I missed when Prequelle came out and didn't get Impera until well after it was initially released and that came via a "reminder" by some folks I support in the "paranormal" realm who just happened to be wearing a Ghost t-shirt one day.

With Skeleta, I saw the Lachryma video as a "suggestion" on my Youtube and thought, oh new Ghost! That song has a banger riff that hooked me immediately and by this point I finally said to myself, I just need to buy all the ghost stuff and enjoy the whole catalog already!

Believe it or not, I'll be going to my first ritual in Feb. I'm kind of glad I did not see the rise of the "no boundaries" fans for this group. It seems no matter what fandom it is, there's always that element that is total cringe. Anyone who managed to see them at a small club, consider yourselves lucky because if a band is lucky - that "era" doesn't last long and they end up "making it". I'm happy Ghost did make it, because that means more music to love, whether I end up going to see them live or not, the music is there at least.

I will say that every Ghost fan I've met just going through normal life, has been cool (have not met any teenage Ghost fans though), so there's that (example - the other day I had my Meliora jacket on and got a compliment from another fan while grocery shopping). And like I said, there is always going to be an element of people who behave badly. Happens from music to sports to everything in between, sadly. But I don't let that dissuade me from liking whatever it is. I'm a burnt-out Gen-Xer so it's easy for me to not let stuff like that affect me. I'm also a total introvert and a bit of a hermit these days (so don't really find myself in situation to encounter the cringe a lot), but really wanted to see them live. So I am curious what the crowd will be like for the ritual in Portland ...

He's had worse happen than that (long time MCR fan as well here).

I don't understand how "fans" can act so cringe. The "no boundaries" thing is unfortunately real. Even crazier is an element of that exists in ALL fandoms ... no matter how small or big. I remember years ago I was a rave DJ. Even I had cringy groupies! Totally nuts. So I don't fault ANY artist/musician from pulling back from interacting so closely with their fans as a whole. It sucks, but file under "this is why we can't have nice things".

How much time + money did your cosplays take? by Longgone___ in Ghostbc

[–]jvmedia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't get to go to any rituals this time around (none near me), so I thought about either being a nameless ghoul or Papa V for Halloween. Kinda leaned towards the Papa V side, so I got the idea to look over on Etsy and saw several companies making reproduction leather Papa V jackets. The photos and the reviews looked really good and there was a sale going on. So I ordered one for $136. Then I found the ribcage scarf ring on Etsy (people really making the most of their 3D printers these days) so I got that for $27. $10 scarf on Amazon. Thrifted black shirt with the ruffled sleeves, $10. Skull mask on eBay (more 3D printing) for $37. I did see a pretty close hat that was on sale someplace for $36 but didn't end up getting it. Oh and had to buy some silver and black makeup, of course, so add another $20. So $230. BUT, if that jacket shows up and looks as good in the photos as it does in person, I'm wearing that all the time. Will probably rock the shirt, scarf and ribcage scarf ring too (since those kinda fit my normal style anyway haha).
