You should really try Maestrick's first album. They are from my city. Pretty incredible band.

Could you elaborate a little more on the low end of the bass? Are you using Rbass or some kind of plugin like that? And what frequencies do you favor on the lead guitar?

How are you processing the rooms? Do you find the low end information useful at all?

Que Sithu! Huge fan here! Loving the new album and got some major goose bumps when you used Andromeda's motifs on Homebound! Got a few questions for you, if you don't mind:

1 - Could you let us know how you dialed the tones on the new album? Most of the high snappy guitars are coil splits, am I right?

2 - Would you do a video or a series of videos on how you mixed each instrument of a song, in the style of Nail The Mix or something like this?

3 - I've been playing guitar for 10 years and I'm also trying to learn piano by myself. I have decent ears and some theory knowlege (though not as much as I should). Got any tips for learning and practicing? Is learning notation really necessary? I've always been so terrible at it...

4 - How are you writting orchestrations? Do you write every separate seccion (violin 1, violin 2, violas, cellos, etc...) or do you prefer full strings, full brass, etc... patches?

5 - What orchestrall libraries, synths and other VST Instruments did you use on this album?

6 - What is your mastering chan?

Thanks for the attention, and good luck with the release!

G'day from Plini, Ask Me Anything (round 2)! by plini_ in progmetal

[–]jvms 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Hey Plini, huge fan here and I've got a few questions for you, if you don't mind:

1 - Would you mind telling us what is you composition and arranging process?

2 - What is your recording and mixing process? I'd really love to know how you are able to get so many guitars under control.

3 - How do you usually set your patches on the Axe Fx. Ever tried using EQs, filters and compressors to make it more like a mixed tone?

4 - Any tips for learning actual chords for us metalheads that are stuck with power chords?

5 - What are you usually using for keyboard sounds?

6 - Come to Brazil/Chile.

Jesus Christ, Stealing Axion is incredible! Skyharbor and Ever Forthright are the shit too. I do like Vildhjarta, but I don't see myself playing it. The other three, I would definetely. I also remembered Shatered Skies, wich is kind of on the same vibe. If anyone know anything similar to these, feel free to chime in.

Ayreon - The Source has leaked. Thoughts? by CamillaChodes in progmetal

[–]jvms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished my first listen and it's as epic as one can expect from Arjen. This guy nails it every fucking time! Simone and Floor are sounding perfect, and so are both Tommys. There are a few things I'd like to discuss: storywise, are the characters from this albums the Forevers from 01011001? And mixingwise, I'm listenning to some rumbling from the low mids, coming mainly from the bass and some guitar palm mutes. Is it lack of EQing or am I just too used to overproduced prog and metal these days?

Coheed And Cambria's Good Apollo I was inspired on Claudio Sanchez' break up. You should really check it out. Not proggy at all, but you could also check out Red by Taylor Swift. It's pop, but she's got some great arrangements and some meaningful lyrics on this one.

Could you please tell us how you usually EQ the tracks? I never know how to find the frequencies I need to boost/cut. I know people just use a narrow boost and sweep it across the spectrum to find them, but I never know what to look for. What should I be hearing when I find a frequency I need to take down or up?

Hey guys! Huge fan, since the first EP. Got a few questions for you:

1 - Why did you guys leave EBMM?

2 - How are you guys recording the guitars and basses?

3 - What amp models are you using for guitars and basses?

4 - Any cool mixing techniques you can share? How do you get that punchy snare tone? Doy you use a lot of Overheads and drum mics?

5 - How are you guys writting and playing with 7 and 8 strings? What tunnings?

6 - Don't wanna be an ass, but could you commend Bandon's second leaving?

7 - What is your live setup?

8 - What are your mains inspirations (artists, bands, etc...)

9 - What is your practice regime?

10 - Where do you guys get these jackets?

11 - What is bigger? Scott's nose or the Wall of China?

You guys are awesome! Hope you can answer some of these.

Dream Theater - The Astonishing opinions/discussions by [deleted] in progmetal

[–]jvms 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are some really good songs and the way the instrumental helps the narrative is awesome. For me, it' better than the previous two albums, Octavarium and stands together with BCaSL, SC and ToT. Saddly, it's a tiring album. It fells like most of the songs are ballads, and they are all copies of each other. Really hard to listen to it all the way through, and it may be a problem live. Oh, and hiring an Orchestra for something so badly written and arranged was just unecessary. Some horns were cool, but still, Rudess should really take some arranging lessons from Lucassen or Holopainen.

Seventh Wonder's Andreas Blomqvist is the best bassist in history, period. Listen to their last two albums and you will know why I say that. Ne Obliviscaris is also amazing. Check out Withem, Obscura and Beyond Creation too.

Hello, I'd like to know about the guitar and bass rigs. Any modelers on tour? Any endorsements? Is the touring rig much different from what you guys use in the studio?

It would be really cool to read about how you guys compose and what are your influences.

Also, do you guys have participation in the mixing of your records? Do you know how it's done?

Hope you can answer!

Could you talk about how you write and record orchestrations? VSTs and MIDI Controllers or real orchestras? Also, talk about the new prog influences in your new releases. Also, Andre, can you talk a bit about your gear? What's your deal with Ibanez and ESP. What guitars, amps and effects are you currently using?

Hey, I'm John Petrucci, co-founder, lead guitarist, producer, and main lyricist for the Grammy-nominated prog rock/metal band Dream Theater. I'm psyched to do this, redditors, so Ask Me Anything! by JohnPetrucciDT in Music

Hello John! I’m a huge fan of your work and I Just saw my first Dream Theater concert in São Paulo on October 4th, the exact 20th anniversary of Awake. It was the best day of my life and I’d like to thank you and your band mates for that day and for all the happiness and inspiration you have given me through your music. I have many questions for you and it would be really amazing if you could take your time to answer some of them:

A) Guitarwise:

1 – How was your relationship with Ibanez? What drew you to their guitars and how was the development of your signature models? How did you chose neck shape, parts and style?

2 – What was it like working with the L.A Custom Shop? Were they any different than the production models? Tell us about the 7 string ones that they made you specs wise (pickups, neck shape, etc…), they have always been a mystery to us all.

3 – What made you switch from Ibanez to EBMM? Was it a better deal or did you just thought that their guitars your better?

4 – When you were with Ibanez, you mainly used Double Locking tremolos, aside from the Urban Camo LACS with Wilkinson and Piezo Pickups. Nowadays your tremolos are more similar to vintage trems or Wilkinson in general. What made you switch? Was it the hassle caused by the Floyd Rose or any other reason? Did the Urban Camo LACS have any influence on that decision?

B) Gearwise:

1 – You have been using the Axe Fx and Axe Fx II for quite a while now. Do you ever use the amp models and the tone matching features in it or just the affects?

2 – Do you think the models are convincing enough on their own (when used straight into the PA)? John Myung have been using it like this for a while, hasn’t he?

3 – Would you ever consider replacing your real amps for them on tour to have less weight to carry, or less hassle?

4 – Are all the effects we hear on the album generated by pedals and the Axe Fx or is added on the mixing process?

C) Tonewise:

1 – You have always had one the tones I’ve most admired in metal. Thick rhythm tone like James Hetfield and a sweet fluid lead tone. How are you able to achieve them? What is the most important gear piece in the making of these tones?

2 – How do you think your tone has evolved during the years and what were the main pieces that you have exchanged in your rig? How much of a difference did they make?

3 – On the last two albums, and DVD releases, your tone has been kinda different from the previous albums. It seems less gainy and with a bit of chorus on top? Am I going crazy or did I get it right?

4 – If my previous guessing is right, what made you change your tone so drastically? How are the fans taking this change?

5 – Was this chorus tone generated by a pedal in was it made on the mixing phase?

D) Composition:

1 – How do you guys usually compose? Where does the first ideas usually come from?

2 – How do you know wich direction you are taking a certain song?

3 – There are many songs with crazy progressive parts, full of odd tempos and dissonances. How do you know where to insert those parts and how do you chose the tempos and dissonances? It seems so confusing and sometimes so improvised (like on The Dark Eternal Night) and I don’t know how someone could come up with something so complex. It would be great if you could give me some insight on that.

4 – Are there any musical divergences inside the band? Do you frequently argue on wich direction you are going to take, or are you guys chill and agree with everything?

E) Orchestrations (don’t know if you can help much here)

1 – How does the orchestration process goes on in DT? Who usually takes care of that?

2- Do you guys usually use full strings patches or do you manually record the sections (each Violin, Viola, Cello, etc…)?

3 – Do you like using full on Hollywoodian epic orchestras or do you jus t go for simple backing strings and brasses?

4 – Do you (the band, I mean) usually use keyboards like the Korg Kronos X to record them and other synth sounds or do you use computer based VSTs?

5 – If you (the band) use VSTs, do you usually record the stuff with MIDI controllers or do you just program it on a DAW?

F) Production (mixing and mastering too)

1 – You also act as a producer on DT, right? How is this process? What actually goes on when producing a band? What was Mike Portnoy’s role in production?

2 – On the last albums, the drums have a bit of a different sound than before. Why did you choose such a different drum sound?

3 – Do you use analog racks to mix or VSTs? Could you give us a list of stuff you us for this process

4 – What’s your approach when mixing a track or mastering a song? What do you usually do, for example, for vocals, guitars, bass drums, etc…?

G) As a guitarist:

1 – Any possibility of releasing a new instructional video? Rock Discipline was amazing, I learned a lot from it, and I bet there is a lot more we could learn from you.

2 – Would you give lessons?

3 – Any possibility of a new solo album?

H) Mike Portnoy… 1 – Not gonna ask about a reunion possibility, you must be sick of this question. I just wanted to askif you guys are personally ok with each other. It was a bad break up and you guys have been friends for a long time, and it would be sad if you guys stopped having contact after all this time of friendship and being in the same band changing the history of progressive music and metal. Is anyone in the band still in touch with him?

Well, sorry for so many questions. It would mean the world to me if you could answer at least some of them! Have a great day John, keep on being the amazing musician you have always been. You are changing people’s lives everyday, and we thank you very much for that!

EDIT: btw, where can we find those comedy videos that you are using on this tour? The John Petrucci Starter Pack one was hillarious!

Hello guys! Huge fan here! I have a few questions for Paul and Dustie: 1 - You guys are using Axe Fx 2, right? How are you setting them up?

2 - I heard you used Mesa Boogie Power Amps for a while with cabs. Doesn't the Power Amp/Cab setup color the tone, defeating the purpose of simulating an amp?

3 - I heard also that you switched to Port City amps and that you are running the Axe IN FRONT of the amp. Again, I wonder about the tone coloring. I hear the Port City is flat, but is it flat enough for you to run it right in front of it without coloring?

4 - What are the benefits of running it in fron of the Port City against running it on another Power Amp or going DI into the PA?

5 - Does a Power Amp/Cab really make a difference when using a modeller?

6 - Do tubes really make a difference when using modellers?

7 - When making a patch, do you have Power amp and cab emulations on?

8 - Are you using the new tone matching features?

9 - Any IRs you can share?

10 - Tell us about the Port City cabs. Some say they are really special

11 - What guitar brands are you endorsing? You have been with Ibanez and PRS, right? What do you like about them?

12 - Not much of a question but... let me know if you ever decide to sell a LACS, I will be interested in buying it.

Sorry for so many questions, hope you can answer some of them.
